Watch France vs England for free as Lionesses begin defence at Euro 2025
England coach Sarina Wiegman is now looking to repeat the feat three years on. However, she will have to rally her team to overcome the side that pipped them to top spot in their qualifying group.
The Lionesses are in something of a transitional state after losing vital players like Mary Earps, who has retired from international football, and Millie Bright, who has pulled out of the competition.
However, Chelsea's Hannah Hampton is set to step up between the sticks while Alessia Russo, Ella Toone and Michelle Agyemang are expected to make their mark, as the team have been playing their way into form ahead of the tournament.
The omens are good for England. No reigning champion has ever lost their first game at the next tournament and they've won three of their last six matches against France in all competitions. However, this will be a stern test with their opponents having not lost their opening game at any of their last nine major tournaments.
The Lionesses have been drawn into a daunting group and will also have to face the Netherlands and Wales. Wiegman will need her team to be firing on all cylinders as they look to bounce back at a major tournament after losing the World Cup final to Spain two years ago.
The Group D encounter will get underway on Saturday, July 5, with kick-off set for 8pm UK time. The fixture will take place at the Stadion Letzigrund, Zurich, Switzerland.
You can watch the game live and for free on ITV1 or on ITVX, with the build-up starting from 7pm. Every game from the competition will be broadcast on either BBC One, BBC Two, ITV1 or ITV4.
You can also stream all the action live on either the BBC iPlayer or ITVX. ITV's coverage will be led by Laura Woods and Seema Jaswal and they will be joined by Karen Carney, Emma Hayes, Vicky Losada, Laura Georges, Jayne Ludlow, Eni Aluko and Caroline Weir on punditry duties.
Wiegman has a lot to consider ahead of her side's opener. Lauren James and Ruby Mace are rushing back to full fitness with hopes of staking a claim in the starting XI. Aggie Beever-Jones, Agyemang and Toone are all set to feature.
France do not have any reported injury concerns and look to have a fully fit squad to choose from. England will have to be wary of names such as Griedge Mbock Bathy, Amel Majri and Kadidiatou Diani.

Sinner savages Martinez to reach Wimbledon last 16
LONDON, July 5 (Reuters) - World number one Jannik Sinner bulldozed into the last 16 at Wimbledon, crushing Spaniard Pedro Martinez 6-1 6-3 6-1 in a ruthless Centre Court demolition job on Saturday. Martinez looked to be struggling with a shoulder problem, with the trainer twice called on court, but Sinner showed no mercy to complete his third consecutive straight-sets victory at the All England Club. The 23-year-old has dropped 17 games in his three matches at an average of less than two per set, in an ominous warning to his rivals for the title. The top seed, bidding to become Italy's first Wimbledon champion, has yet to lose his serve and will next face either Bulgaria's Grigor Dimitrov or Austria's Sebastian Ofner.

The Sounesses are regular attenders at Wimbledon - and so too were many of the others who attended on Saturday. The list included cricketers Andrew Strauss and Ian Botham, and Team GB cycling power couple Jason and Laura Kenny. Multiple Olympic sailing medallist Ben Ainslie was present too as was Irish rugby hero Brian O'Driscoll and Olympic sailing and rowing stars Ben Ainslie and Steve Redgrave. Denise Lewis and Kelly Holmes represented athletics with Anthony Joshua and promoter Eddie Hearn present from the world of boxing. Souness recently completed a second gruelling English Channel swim in honour of Debra - after he and his team spent 22 hours crossing the channel and BACK. The big-hearted Rangers hero has made it a personal mission to raise awareness of a condition called butterfly skin (EB) - despite the fact he underwent an emergency heart operation as recently as September. He was taken to hospital after suffering chest pains while watching football on TV at home. Souness also needed shoulder SURGERY after completing the last charity channel swim - but he was determined not to let the side down and duly did his bit for a good cause. But a video early in the swim shows how tough he found it, admitting he felt terrible in the break between his first leg of the day and his second. Moment dehydrated and seasick Rangers hero Graeme Souness, 71, says 'I feel terrible' during latest charity channel swim Asked about the "dodgy period" he had suffered since the last swim, Souness replied: "It was one of two things, I think I've either gone and dehydrated myself sitting for three hours in the sunshine before the first swim or a bit of seasickness but I felt terrible. Speaking at the conclusion of the event, Souness added: "How do I feel? I'm knackered! I really am, no amount of training can prepare you for what we just did. "Last time it was tough, but this time was even tougher. The weather was nice though! "I am emotional when I think about why we did this. To support Isla and everyone else living with this horrendous condition." 5 Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page
