Rory Gallagher to be honoured with naming ceremony at Cork Airport

Taoiseach Micheál Martin will officially name Rory Gallagher Avenue at a ceremony at Cork Airport on Saturday. In attendance will be Rory's brother Donal and other family members as well as lord mayor of Cork Dan Boyle, a musician and fan of the late virtuoso guitarist.
Gallagher was born in Ballyshannon, Co Donegal, and grew up in Cork. It was while on Leeside that he began his music career, playing first with showbands such as The Fontana and The Impact before forming Taste with fellow Cork musicians Eric Kitteringham and Norman Damery.
But it was with the second incarnation of Taste, with Richard McCracken on bass and John Wilson on drums, that Gallagher toured the United States with
Eric Clapton
and Blind Faith before putting in a storming performance at the Isle of Wight Festival in front of an estimated 600,000-plus fans in 1970.

Dissolving the blues-rock trio in late 1970, Gallagher went on to have a highly successful solo career, selling millions of albums, being voted guitarist of the year by Melody Maker readers in 1972 and earning the respect of such legends as Muddy Waters and Clapton.

Gallagher died on June 14th, 1995, aged 47, from complications following a liver transplant. To mark the 30th anniversary of his death, Cork City Council, Cork City Libraries and Gallagher's estate are holding a series of commemorative events this weekend, Cork Rocks for Rory.
Cllr Dan Boyle said the commemorative events would include photographic and original memorabilia exhibitions at Cork City Hall, Central Library and Public Museum and a citywide walking trail commemorating the life and legacy of the musician.
'Rory Gallagher has been Cork's finest cultural export across the world. As we mark the 30th anniversary of his passing, we must celebrate his genius.'
Gallagher's nephew Eoin Gallagher said: 'The Gallagher family are honoured and proud to endorse this initiative led by the lord mayor of Cork, Dan Boyle, and Cork City Council.
'The interest in Rory's music and life has only continued to grow and grow, here in Ireland and throughout the world. We are delighted to support these simultaneous exhibitions and the establishment of the permanent 'Rory Gallagher's Stompin' Ground' Cork City Walking Trail.'

Tommy Bowe questions woman's decision to bring child to tennis match
Tommy Bowe has questioned the decision of a parent to bring their child to a tennis match after the child in question disrupted the players by crying. Partway through the match between Emma Raducanu and Aryna Sabalenka at the Cincinnati Open, Raducanu complained about the crying child 'for ten minutes' to the chair umpire, who replied in seemingly disbelief by asking whether Raducanu wanted the child to be removed, to which Raducanu and some of the crowd responded in the affirmative. The British tennis star has come in for some criticism from some quarters for her remarks and attitude to the crying child, but she has a supporter in ex-Ireland rugby star Tommy Bowe who also believes the child shouldn't have been brought to the event. Bowe told actor Gerard Jordan, who was appearing on the show, that he wouldn't have brought his children to such an event, and in an imagined scenario where a babysitter fell through at the last minute, the ex-rugby star claimed that in that situation he would have simply stayed at home with the children. "As a parent, I would know that it would be too stressful for me to take my child in there to be put in that situation. So I'd decide, no, I don't think it's worth upsetting the other people who are watching it and me being put under the stress of doing it. I'll watch it on the telly," said Bowe. Tommy Bowe Like Raducanu, Bowe has come in for some criticism for his comments, with one social media user saying "Disappointed in these comments. No compassion for that mom. Gerard Jordan is just trying to inspire people to put themselves in someone else's shoes for two seconds but y'all can't even do that." Others have defended Bowe, and have suggested that in a sporting event like tennis where the crowd remains mostly silent, perhaps a young child isn't suited to such an environment. As for the match itself, Sabalenka won in three sets as she continues to build momentum ahead of next month's US Open, where Raducanu will team with Carlos Alcaraz in mixed doubles action.

Sharlene Mawdsley and GAA star boyfriend take big step in relationship
Sharlene Mawdsley appears to be primed to take a huge step in her relationship with her boyfriend, Tipperary hurling hero Mikey Breen. Sharlene and Mikey went public with their relationship earlier this summer, with the Olympian spotted at Croke Park cheering defender Breen on during the Premier County's run to the Liam MacCarthy Cup. Taking to social media on Tuesday, Sharlene posted a cryptic message on her Instagram story that appears to suggest that herself and Breen are moving to a new home. Sharing a snap of two keys on a table in a living room on her Instagram story, Mawdsley tagged Breen while captioning the story 'End of the Thurles Era @mikeybreeno.' Mawdsley and Breen confirmed their relationship this summer, and the pair appeared on stage at Tipperary's Semple Stadium homecoming following Tipp's All-Ireland win over Cork. Sprinter Mawdsley was even spotted racing some Tipperary fans after a long night of celebrations following the win, and needless to say the Newport AC star cruised to victory. It has been a difficult year for Mawdsley since starring at the Paris Olympics with Team Ireland. The 27-year-old had to deal with an injury hit start to the year, while she also suffered in her personal life as her father, Thomas, passed away at the beginning of June. The relay specialist returned to the track later in the summer and recently picked up a National 200m title as she pipped Sarah Lavin and Lauren Roy in an epic race at Morton Stadium earlier this month.

The Liam MacCarthy Cup has been steadily making its way around Tipperary the last month. Nenagh has already witnessed some rapturous scenes with the trophy. And it was back in the town again, this time in Nenagh Hospital where some of the All-Ireland winners took it on a tour of the wards. And it got a joyful and sometimes emotional reception. Pictured above performing his very own trophy lift was the proud John Ferncombe, watched by visiting Tipp stars Willie Connors, Noel McGrath, Craig Morgan, Jason Forde and John McGrath.
