Officials: Table Rock, Persimmon Ridge wildfires 100% contained
SOUTH CAROLINA (WSPA) — Two weeks and thousands of acres later, the Table Rock Complex fires have been fully contained.According to the South Carolina Forestry Commission, the fires burned through 15,000 acres in Pickens and Greenville counties, as well as part of North Carolina.
Officials said the fires were declared 100% contained Tuesday, after heavy rainfall passed through the Upstate on Monday.

The Table Rock wildfire initially started March 21, after four teens allegedly were hiking on a trail and did not put out their cigarettes. In total, the fire burned 13,845 acres.

The Persimmon Ridge wildfire ignited in Greenville County on March 22.State forestry officials said the fire was 'human-caused,' but did not share more details about how the fire began. The fire burned a total of 2,128 acres.
According to State Fire Marshal Jonathan Jones, the Table Rock Complex fires led to the largest South Carolina Firefighter Mobilization since the program's start in 2000.
Around one thousand firefighters were mobilized from across the state, along with nearly 400 vehicles, including engines, brush trucks, UTVs, and federal support.
'Resources remaining on the fires will continue to focus on suppression repair, which involves stabilizing exposed soil with seed and straw to prevent erosion and remove dirt and debris from stream crossings,' officials said. 'Water bars will also be installed on containment lines to divert surface water runoff back into the woods.'
The fires will not be classified as 'controlled' until firefighting resources are no longer needed at the wildfire sites.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WSPA) – South Carolina residents are no strangers to hurricane season, and it officially started Sunday. Kim Stenson, director of the South Carolina Emergency Division, said it's crunch time. 'Prepare while you've got the time to prepare because doing the last-minute piece of it is probably not going to always work very well,' said Stenson. 'So certainly, need to take a look at those resources, build your plan and be ready to take action if you need to.' Stenson said the best time to prepare for a hurricane is before one forms. June 1 was the first day of hurricane season, and it runs through November 30. 'Stay in tune with what's going on. Listen to your trusted sources for information, especially at the local level or trusted local sources, and if you're encouraged to evacuate, or asked to evacuate, you should heed that warning,' Stenson said. There have been several natural disasters recently, like Hurricane Helene and wildfires. Stenson said those events shouldn't change people's preparation but, no matter where you live, coast or inland, you're not off the hook. Storms can bring flash flooding and strong winds. 'Well, we don't really expect any big changes in terms of that. I mean, we've known about these risks for a number of years,' said Stenson. 'For several years, we have encouraged people to be aware that a hurricane event is not just a coastal county event, but it can occur anywhere in South Carolina in terms of the effects of it; the wind and the rain, etc. ' Stenson added that communication with FEMA is still evolving. They have not heard anything about getting fewer resources this year. 'We don't have, you know, all the information in terms of what we think may end up in that particular sphere but, right now we're expecting to get the same level of support from FEMA that we get every year and, you know, that may change later on, but we're not expecting anything right now,' Stenson said. Small earthquake shakes part of Transylvania County
TRANSYLVANIA COUNTY, N.C. (WSPA) – A small earthquake shook a mountainous area of Transylvania County early Friday morning. The magnitude 2.4 quake happened around 3:12 a.m. in an area located just northeast of Lake Toxaway, less than five miles west of Rosman. The United States Geological Survey said the quake happened at a depth of around three miles. Several residents in the Lake Toxaway area reported feeling light shaking, according to the USGS. Man arrested for shooting during Hurricane Helene aftermath
UNION, S.C. (WSPA) – An Upstate man was arrested Friday in connection with a shooting reported the day after Hurricane Helene. The Union Police Department charged Kennedy Jamar Garrett, of Union, with attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime after he was identified as the suspected shooter in the incident on Sept. 28. Officers responded to a home on Union Boulevard for a shooting victim. Emergency officials located the victim and immediately started treatment. The victim reported to authorities that he was cleaning debris from his yard when he was approached by Garrett, 'trash-talking.' The victim admitted that he punched Garrett in the mouth because Garrett was asked to leave his property, but the suspect refused. Following the assault, police said Garrett presented a pistol and attempted to shoot the victim. According to the incident report, the first shot misfired. Garrett supposedly pulled the trigger a second time and shot the victim in the leg. The victim was taken to Spartanburg Regional for his injuries, while he subsequently provided a written statement to law enforcement.
