Brendon Doherty, 55, is missing after jumping off a bridge into croc infested water near Darwin
Brendon Doherty, 55, jumped off the Channel Island Bridge into Darwin Harbour on Friday night but got caught in strong tidal currents and was unable to make it back to shore.
His friends last saw him laughing in the water before he was swept away about 9.42pm.
The Joint Emergency Services Communication Centre received reports Mr Doherty was unable to swim back to shore despite encouragement from his friends.
Police said he was last seen in the middle of the channel drifting towards Darwin City in strong currents.
'Witnesses observed him for approximately two minutes before losing sight of him,' a police spokesman said.
The Search and Rescue Section was deployed and searched for Mr Doherty around the Middle Arm peninsula in Darwin Harbour overnight.
Police urge anyone who may have see a man in the area or along the Darwin Harbour shoreline to provide aid and call Triple 0 immediately.

The federal government has launched compliance action against 30 childcare centres as it moves desperately to ramp up child safety measures in the wake of jarring allegations of widespread failures across the embattled sector. Education Minister Jason Clare, speaking on Friday, said the 30 centres had failed to meet National Quality Standards and he would withdraw funding from them if they did not lift their performance over the next six months. 'We have taken action swiftly under the new legislation to begin rebuilding confidence in a system that parents need to have confidence in,' he said. 'This is not about closing centres down, it's about lifting standards up. 'Over the next six months, these centres will need to lift their game or they will face further consequences including the cutting off of funding.' The centres, which have not been named, now have 48 hours to notify parents of the action. Not meeting quality and safety standards can include failures to provide for play area safety, hygiene, staff training or supervision. The compliance blitz follows the passage of legislation through federal parliament last month giving the government the power to strip funding from centres that fail to meet basic standards. Early Childhood Education Minister Jess Walsh said the government would put the 'safety and wellbeing' of children 'first and foremost'. 'Today's action should signal to all early childhood education and care providers that the National Quality Standards are not optional and that all services must be up to scratch,' she said. The country is reeling from multiple allegations of shocking and widespread failures in child safety across the sector. On July 1, Victoria Police announced horrific child sex abuse allegations against child care worker Joshua Dale Brown, alleging he had offended against eight children while working for the Creative Gardens Point Cook centre between October 2021 and February 2024. Mr Brown worked in at least 23 centres across Victoria between January 2017 and May 2025 and he held a valid Working With Children Check (WWCC). Later that month, it was revealed the Australian Federal Police had charged David William James with abusing children at six after-school care centres between 2021 and 2024. On Friday, state and federal attorney-generals met to discuss how to toughen up safety. Attorney-General Michelle Rowland has promised a 'banned in one, banned in all' system – in which a person banned from holding a WWCC in one state cannot obtain one in another. Under the changes, criminal histories will be updated and shared in real time between jurisdictions and the criteria that determines who is able to obtain a WWCC will be strengthened. 'It is notable that nefarious individuals have been shopping around the working with children check system and exploiting loopholes,' Ms Rowland said. Ms Rowland said the new national system would be operational by the end of the year. Both the Victorian and NSW governments have also pledged to ban personal mobile devices from centres. Major providers, including G8 Education and Affinity, have pledged to install CCTV into their centres. Varroa mites found in beehives in Gippsland, Victoria
A deadly parasite that infests beehives and kills honey bees has spread through regional Victoria. Varroa mites have been detected in beehives throughout the Gippsland region, putting apiarists on alert to monitor their hives for any infestation. Gippsland Apiarist Association president Stan Glowacki said once a mite got into a beehive it could build up numbers where it killed off the hive within about six to nine months. 'If you have 400 hives that could be quite a financial hit to your operation,' he said. 'It's going to affect every beekeeper, it does not matter whether they have one hive or 1000 hives.' Varroa destructors are a parasite of adult honey bees and broods that weaken and kill honey bee colonies and transmit viruses, according to Victoria Agriculture. They are a major problem for commercial and hobby beekeepers once they become established. Varroa mites were first detected in NSW in June 2022. A national eradication response saw 14,000 hives euthanised before it was determined it was not feasible to achieve total elimination. Authorities and beekeepers now manage the pest, which can cost about $40 a year per hive, according to Mr Glowacki. 'It's a little parasitic mite that moves on the bees,' Mr Glowacki said. 'To scale it up to human size, it's the equivalent of having a parasite the size of a dinner plate stuck on your body, sucking out your blood.' He said once a female mite got inside a hive and a brood hatched it was an exponential threat. 'It's very worrying even for a small backyard beekeeper. Nobody wants to lose their bees,' he said. 'If you don't monitor your hives and manage the mite you're going to lose your hives. 'Eventually we're going to get to the stage where the industry is going to know the genetics and have hives that can manage the mite without the use of chemicals. 'But until we get to that stage people will lose hives and pay for the chemicals to try and keep their hives alive.' Victoria Agriculture has been contacted for comment. Police swarm Mount Lawley Senior High School after gun threats spread on TikTok
Police swarmed a Perth high school after students spread a video on TikTok which contained a threat to 'shoot up the school'. Screenshots of the video, which has since been deleted, allegedly showed students in Mount Lawley Senior High School uniforms and armed shooters. Multiple police cars and officers were at the school on Friday. A police spokesman said they were responding to reports of threats being made towards the Mount Lawley school. 'There are no safety concerns or imminent risk to students, teachers or members of the community.' School principal Lesley Street sent an email to parents asking them to monitor and speak with their child about any concerns and social media use. 'It is important to be aware of the positive and negative impacts of social media and conversations within the community as misinformation and rumours may be unhelpful,' the email stated. Staff were told that police would conduct regular patrols around the school as a precautionary measure, the West reported. 'The current situation is that WAPOL State security investigation group is conducting the investigation,' an email stated.
