Forex reserves fall to USD 685.73 bn on May 16: RBI
Mumbai, May 23 (UNI) India's foreign exchange reserves declined by USD 4.89 billion (₹31,650 crore) in the week ended May 16, 2025, to stand at USD 685.73 billion (₹58.66 lakh crore), according to data released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Friday.
Despite the sharp weekly drop, the overall reserves posted a robust year-on-year growth of USD 37.03 billion (₹4.59 lakh crore) and a rise of USD 17.40 billion (₹1.53 lakh crore) since the end of March 2025, reflecting underlying strength in India's external sector position.
Foreign Currency Assets (FCA), which form the largest component of the reserves, increased marginally during the week by USD 279 million (₹11,019 crore), taking the total to USD 581.65 billion (₹49.75 lakh crore). Since March-end, FCA rose by USD 14.09 billion (₹1.24 lakh crore) and showed an annual gain of USD 12.64 billion (₹2.33 lakh crore).
Gold reserves were valued at USD 81.22 billion (₹6.95 lakh crore), recording a steep weekly fall of USD 5.12 billion (₹42,520 crore). However, gold holdings were still higher by USD 3.04 billion (₹26,538 crore) from end-March and surged by USD 24.02 billion (₹2.18 lakh crore) over the year.
Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) stood at USD 18.49 billion (₹1.58 lakh crore), down by USD 43 million (₹90 crore) over the week. SDRs rose by USD 321 million (₹2,866 crore) since March-end and also recorded a similar annual increase.
India's Reserve Position in the International Monetary Fund (IMF) was reported at USD 4.37 billion (₹37,404 crore), reflecting a weekly decline of USD 3 million (₹59 crore). It was down by USD 52 million (₹451 crore) since March, but up by USD 44 million (₹1,279 crore) compared to the same period last year.
The RBI noted that foreign currency assets exclude its own SDR holdings, investments in bonds issued by IIFC (UK), funds under SAARC and ACU currency swap arrangements, and contributions to Nexus Global Payments.

Elon Musk, who supported Donald Trump with over USD 250 million and served as a senior advisor, has now expressed disappointment with a key part of Trump's legislative plan, calling it the president's 'big beautiful bill.' The legislation includes tax cuts and stronger immigration enforcement. Speaking to CBS, Musk called it a 'massive spending bill' that raises the federal deficit and 'undermines the work' of his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). 'I think a bill can be big or it could be beautiful. But I don't know if it could be both," Musk said. His CBS interview came out Tuesday night. Trump, speaking in the Oval Office on Wednesday, defended his agenda by talking about the delicate politics involved with negotiating the legislation. "I'm not happy about certain aspects of it, but I'm thrilled by other aspects of it," Trump said, while also hinting at potential revisions. 'We're going to see what happens. It's got a way to go,' he added. The bill recently cleared the House and is now being debated in the Senate. Elon Musk's concerns about the legislation have found support among some Republican lawmakers. 'I sympathise with Elon being discouraged,' said Senator Ron Johnson of Wisconsin. Speaking at a Milwaukee Press Club event on Wednesday, Johnson added that he was 'pretty confident' there was enough opposition 'to slow this process down until the president, our leadership, gets serious' about reducing spending. Speaker Mike Johnson has urged senators to make minimal changes to the legislation, saying House Republicans reached a 'very delicate balance' that could be disrupted by major revisions. The narrowly divided House will need to vote again on the bill once the Senate makes alterations. On Wednesday, Johnson thanked Elon Musk for his efforts and pledged to pursue further spending cuts, saying, 'the House is eager and ready to act on DOGE's findings." The White House is sending proposed rescissionsmeasures to cancel previously authorised spending to Capitol Hill to support some of DOGE's cuts. A spokesperson for the Office of Management and Budget said the package will include USD 1.1 billion from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which funds NPR and PBS, and USD 8.3 billion in foreign aid. Musk's criticism comes as he steps back from government work to focus on his companies, Tesla and SpaceX. He also said he will reduce his political spending, stating, 'I think I've done enough." At times, Musk appeared humbled by his government experience. Although he hoped DOGE would achieve USD 1 trillion in spending cuts, the results fell far short. 'The federal bureaucracy situation is much worse than I realised. I thought there were problems, but it sure is an uphill battle trying to improve things in DC, to say the least," he told The Washington Post. Previously energized by the chance to reshape Washington, Musk wore campaign hats in the White House, held rallies, and described excessive spending as an existential crisis. Malabar Group allocates Rs 150 crore for CSR in 2025-26
New Delhi, May 28 (UNI) Malabar Group, one of India's leading business conglomerates and parent company of Malabar Gold & Diamonds, has announced a substantial allocation of Rs 150 crore for its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programmes in the financial year 2025-26. The fund will be deployed to expand initiatives across healthcare, education, hunger and poverty alleviation, women empowerment, environment protection, and housing for the underprivileged. On World Hunger Day, the Group reaffirmed its commitment under the flagship 'Hunger Free World' project to distribute 70,000 meals daily across India and Zambia, amounting to a total of 2.5 crore meals in 2025-26. This marks a significant increase compared to the 2.5 crore meals served over the past three years since the programme's inception. The initiative aligns with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal 2 – Zero Hunger. Dr Amitabh Kant, former CEO of NITI Aayog and G-20 Sherpa, inaugurated the next phase of the Group's CSR activities. Present at the event were MP Ahammed, Chairman of Malabar Group; KP Abdul Salam, Vice Chairman; O Asher, Managing Director of India Operations; Group Executive Directors Nishad AK and KP Veerankutty; Group Director PA Abdulla Ibrahim; Dr Idrees V, Chairman of THANAL Daya Rehabilitation Trust; Jishad NK, Zonal Head – North, and other senior officials. With 295 million people globally facing acute hunger as per UN data, immediate action is non-negotiable. Our Hunger Free World initiative reflects this urgency, focusing on meal distribution alongside efforts to boost food production, create jobs, and foster sustainable economic growth." Currently, the Hunger Free World project distributes over 60,000 nutrient-rich meals daily through 167 centres across 20 states in India. In Zambia, the Group partners with the government to serve 10,000 meals daily to students in three schools. The kitchens operate with modern equipment and are staffed by trained culinary and hygiene personnel. In addition to hunger alleviation, the Group's educational initiatives include 716 micro-learning centres providing primary education and nutrition to street children across India. Over 32,000 children have enrolled, with 9,000 integrated into formal schooling, in collaboration with THANAL. Scholarships have been awarded to 1,14,000 girls to support their education. The Group's 'Grandma Homes' initiative offers free shelter and care to destitute women, with operational centres in Bengaluru, Kerala, and Hyderabad, and plans to expand to Chennai, Kolkata, Delhi, and Mumbai. On healthcare, Malabar Group plans to establish non-profit medical stores offering subsidised medicines across 140 locations in Kerala, with 27 stores already operational. The 'Uyirppu Project' supports higher education for children affected by last year's Wayanad landslide, providing financial aid to 134 students.
