Law: Biggest risers and fallers from the newest MLB top-50 prospect ranking

As a companion piece to my re-ranking of the top 50 prospects in the minors — which was almost immediately undercut by the promotion of Jac Caglianone and demotion of Jordan Lawlar within days of the list going live — I've added some further notes below on six players whose outlooks have changed significantly based on the two months we've had so far, both in terms of scouts' notes and what we can see in the data.
Lewis probably would have cracked the top 50 had he played more this year, but the Reds' second-round pick from 2024 didn't make his debut this year until May 12, and even now he has barely passed 50 professional plate appearances. They've been elite, though, as he was hitting .383/.444/.574 through Monday's games with only an 18.5 percent strikeout rate, and he's already hitting the ball extremely hard, with several batted balls over 110 mph. He's in the Arizona Complex League now, and that's unusual for teams to do with a high MLB Draft pick, but I'm hopeful other teams will see Lewis' success to date and consider holding some of their teenage prospects back a little to play in the complex rather than pushing them all to Low A. There's no downside to a month in the complex to tune up before facing the better competition of full-season ball. Either way, Lewis would be on a top-75 list right now, and I won't be the least bit surprised if he's in the top 30 next winter.

Arias was the MVP of the Florida Man League last year at age 18, then ended with a credible .257/.331/.378 line in 36 games in Low A to finish his first season playing in the U.S. He went back to Low A and was so good the Red Sox bumped him up to High A before April was out. He hasn't stopped hitting since, with exceptional contact skills and breaking ball recognition already. He has whiffed on just 10 percent of the pitches he's swung at this year, which would be great for pretty much any player but is wild for a player who'll be 19 all season, playing in High A. His only real … I wouldn't even call it a flaw or a concern, but he does put the ball on the ground more often than you'd like, just over 50 percent on the season. If that improves, then we're looking at a shortstop with a plus hit tool and 20-plus homer upside. That's a prospect who ends up in the running to be No. 1 at some point.

Bonemer was the biggest enigma of the 2024 draft for me. He came into the spring a potential high first-rounder, but I got report after report that he wasn't hitting well even against mediocre competition in Michigan, and his swing seemed to change with every video I saw, starting in the fall of 2023. He has shown an advanced approach in his pro debut, with an excellent understanding of the strike zone, and the White Sox have encouraged him to go back to using the middle of the field more. That's a more natural plan for him and an improvement over his attempts to pull the ball in the air more last spring. You have to hit if you're going to hit for power. Bonemer's strong enough that the power will be there, and it's a positive sign that he's hitting as well as he is.

Sproat was at No. 30 on the list coming into 2025, thanks to a strong full-season debut in 2024 that saw him dominate High A and Double A with premium stuff across the board, although he scuffled in seven starts in Triple A to end the year. Those difficulties have continued this year, as he has a 6.02 ERA with Syracuse with just a 16.6 percent strikeout rate and 10.7 percent walk rate. The walk rate is right around the International League average, and the strikeout rate is substantially below (23.6 percent). The quality of his stuff hasn't changed much, if at all, but he now has more than twice the experience at Triple A, and hitters there haven't had much trouble connecting with all of his pitches. Nothing he has thrown has a whiff rate over 28 percent this year, and he has given up too much hard contact, especially on the fastball. Lefties are destroying him, with a .333/.420/.479 line, as his changeup is too firm and he doesn't command it, leaving it up way too often. He probably needs another pitch, or a revised changeup, for lefties so he can stay a starter, even before we get into broader questions of fastball command or what to do with the variety of breaking pitches he throws.

Smith was the White Sox's first-round pick in 2024, going at No. 5, but his Double-A debut this year hasn't gone well — he made seven starts, and in 25 2/3 innings, he walked 20 batters before hitting the IL with soreness in his left elbow. An MRI didn't show any damage, so the injury isn't a catastrophe, but his 18.7 percent walk rate puts him in the bottom 5 percent among all minor-league pitchers who've thrown at least 20 innings this year. I'm hopeful this is just a matter of a small sample where Smith may have been fighting through some discomfort and thus unable to command the ball as he has in the past. That kind of walk rate, if sustained over a larger sample, will push him to the bullpen.
Taylor was No. 89 on my top 100 coming into the year, after getting quite a bit of industry support when I talked to sources before compiling the rankings. He hit the ball consistently hard when he did hit it last year and looked like he'd be a 55 or better defender at third or second. He struck out a lot last year, however, and that's not showing any signs of abating, as he's hitting .183/.287/.327 in Double A with a 28.7 percent strikeout rate, which is at least down from 36.8 percent last year in Double A. He's 23 now and hasn't hit a lick in half a season at this level. I'm not giving up entirely, but the evidence is pretty strong that he's not going to hit.

Trent Alexander-Arnold told he's still nowhere near as good as 35-year-old RB

England manager Thomas Tuchel has been told that Kyle Walker remains a better all-round player than former Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold, as the Three Lions prepare to face Finland and Senegal over the next few days. Advertisement England has been blessed with top-quality right-backs in recent times, with Walker, 35, and Alexander-Arnold also facing competition from Chelsea's Reece James. Walker's club career took an unexpected turn this year, as he was sent to AC Milan on loan for the second half of the season — after reportedly being snubbed by Real Madrid — following a disappointing start to the campaign. Although Madrid wasn't keen on Walker, Alexander-Arnold has found a place on the Spanish team's roster. Liverpool acted quickly to replace him with Jeremie Frimpong, and the right-back's former Bayer Leverkusen teammate Florian Wirtz could also join the Reds. READ MORE: Liverpool transfer news LIVE: Rayan Cherki decision, Florian Wirtz 'confirms' deal, Kerkez medical READ MORE: Liverpool transfer target 'says yes' to Reds in record-breaking deal Advertisement Walker started just 11 games for Milan but was still named in the England squad for the World Cup qualifier against Finland as well as next week's friendly against Senegal. Former England winger Chris Waddle suggested that Walker should get the nod. "It's a really strange one," Waddle said of Walker's current career situation while speaking to "He's been in and out of the team at Milan. "It was a good move to go there, and when I watch him play he clearly has the pace to deal with the top-level stuff, but he's still been an inconsistent starter. Kyle Walker and Trent Alexander-Arnold are among England's best right-backs "Now, that might be because he doesn't fit their tactics right now, or because they just played so many games, but even if it was a sensible move to make at the time, it hasn't quite gone as he'd have hoped. Advertisement "At the same time, it's hard to name a better English right-back. Trent Alexander-Arnold can be exceptional but he's not outstanding as a true defender. "He's got his talents, there's no denying it, with exceptional passing and dead-ball delivery, but if it's him or Walker, we're not blessed in that position for a young right-back who does what you expect. I think Kyle is the pick of the two right now, his all-round game puts him ahead of the rest." Alexander-Arnold's move from Liverpool to Real Madrid was confirmed at the end of May, with the Spanish club paying the Reds an $11 million transfer fee — despite the player's Liverpool contract being due to expire just a few weeks later. That's because Madrid wanted Alexander-Arnold to be part of Xabi Alonso's squad for the start of the Club World Cup, which gets under way in the middle of June. Madrid could have waited until July 1 to sign Alexander-Arnold on a free transfer, and he would have been eligible to play in Los Blancos' remaining games in the tournament, but the Spanish giant was keen for the player to have a period of integration in the weeks building up to the revamped event.

Who is Abdelhamid Ait Boudlal? Liverpool linked with teenager also wanted by Newcastle

Liverpool is reportedly interested in 19-year-old Rennes center-back Abdelhamid Ait Boudlal, as the club continues to consider its defensive options ahead of next season. While Virgil van Dijk is staying put for another two years, there is uncertainty over Ibrahima Konate's future ahead of the expiration of his contract next year, while Joe Gomez is coming back from hamstring surgery and Jarell Quansah has just experienced a regressive campaign. Advertisement The Reds were interested in Dean Huijsen, but he plumped for Real Madrid, and a link has now emerged with another young defender in Ait Boudlal. Liverpool has already signed one defender in Jeremie Frimpong this summer, while Florian Wirtz could also be on the way. READ MORE: Andy Robertson makes Man Utd dig as Liverpool left-back hails Napoli 'king' Scott McTominay READ MORE: Liverpool transfer news LIVE: Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez latest Liverpool and Newcastle are both said to be interested in the player, and while Newcastle has reportedly met with the player, the Reds are reported by Le360 Sport to have gone one step further and made a concrete offer to him. There is also interest in Ait Boudlal from other clubs in France as well as two clubs in Spain. Who is Abdelhamid Ait Boudlal? Given his young age and lack of top-level game time, most soccer fans are unlikely to have heard of him, but he is highly rated. In October last year, Ait Boudlal was named by English newspaper The Guardian as one of world's best 2006-born players. In February, he was sent on loan to French second tier side Amiens for the remainder of the campaign, and went on to make nine appearances, with eight of those coming as starts. Le360 Sport reports that Ait Boudlal is noted for "his ability to pass, his defensive intelligence, and a maturity rare for his age." Reds' transfer window state of play Boudlal is one of several players Liverpool is pursuing ahead of next season, with the club also working on deals for more high-profile targets in Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez. Advertisement Wirtz recently decided that he wanted to join Liverpool ahead of Bayern Munich, and there is belief that a deal could be wrapped up before the summer's first transfer window closes on June 10 — even if it isn't, the window reopens less than a week later and runs until the beginning of September. Talks are also ongoing over Kerkez, who the club has identified as its preferred long-term successor to Andy Robertson, who will turn 32 next season. Robertson was asked about Liverpool's interest in Kerkez ahead of Scotland's friendly with Iceland on Friday and responded: "We're not daft, it looks as if a deal could potentially be done. "But, until that is done, I've not even given that a second thought. I back myself. I've got confidence in my own ability and that drives me forward."

Liverpool transfer target 'says yes' to Reds in record-breaking deal

Liverpool is close to signing a new goalkeeper following the departure of Caoimhin Kelleher — although he will not assume the role of the Reds' back-up goalkeeper next season. That spot will still go to Giorgi Mamardashvili, who is set to move to Anfield a year on from agreeing to join the Reds, and no doubt has Alisson's No.1 jersey in his sights. Advertisement The Reds do, though, appear to be planning for the future, as they move towards an agreement to sign 20-year-old goalkeeper Armin Pecsi from Hungarian club Puskas Akademia. The youngster is said to be viewed as Hungary's next big goalkeeper prospect after Peter Gulacsi, who coincidentally also joined Liverpool earlier on in his career. understands Pecsi has said yes to a deal to join the Reds, agreeing terms on what is set to be a club-record deal for his current club. The fee is understood to be up to around $2.0 million (£1.5 million). READ MORE: Liverpool set to miss out on transfer target as AC Milan plots move READ MORE: Michael Owen admits Premier League rival had him 'fearing for his career' Advertisement It's also understood Pecsi will initially play for the Reds' U21s side, who are now searching for a new head coach after Barry Lewtas stepped down. Pecsi, 20, first began training with Puskas' senior team as a 16-year-old and is now the team's first-choice goalkeeper, and he helped the club to a second-placed finish in the Hungarian top flight in 2024-25. Last month, Pesci was named among the nominees for the Golden Boy award, which is given to the best Under-21 player in world football. Meanwhile, Kelleher said that it was an easy decision to leave Liverpool upon completing his transfer to fellow Premier League side Brentford. Reflecting on his exit from Anfield and his arrival at his new club, Kelleher said: 'I'm buzzing, I'm really happy to be here. 'I don't think it was very difficult for me to leave [Liverpool]. I felt for my own career that the time was right for me to go, to be a no.1 and to play every week. Once I knew Brentford was in for me, it was definitely one I was really excited about and wanted to do as quickly as possible. Advertisement 'When I come back for pre-season, all focus will be on what I want to do next year; to work on certain goals and what I need to improve on, and to have a really good season for Brentford." Liverpool's new No.2 goalkeeper, Mamardashvili, confirmed last month that he will move to Anfield at the end of the season after there were some suggestions that he might spend another season at Valencia. "I'll go to Liverpool and give my all, just like I did at Valencia," Mamardashvili said. "I'll work hard every single day, training with Alisson will help me."
