Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla smiles in court as unrest trial set
The matter has been postponed for trial, which is scheduled to take place from 10 to 21 November.
She appeared in the Durban High Court on Thursday, 14 August in connection with unrest and public violence that occurred across the country in July 2021.
National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) KwaZulu-Natal spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara said Zuma-Sambudla faces multiple charges, including incitement to commit terrorism and incitement to commit public violence.
The looting and unrest left over 300 dead and numerous others injured.
The uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK Party) Member of Parliament appeared all smiles as she met supporters in the courtroom.
In July 2021, chaos erupted across South Africa following the arrest of former President Jacob Zuma, MK Party leader. Zuma's daughter, Zuma-Sambudla, is believed to have shared social media posts that fueled the unrest.
At the time, the controversial politician shared posts on X saying, 'KZN, we see you.' In reference to this, the MK Party also shared the hashtag #WeSeeYou alongside a picture of Zuma-Sambudla.

Amantle Samane's family in pain as her killer found guilty
The family of six-year-old Amantle Samane, who was murdered in Soweto last year, are struggling to contain the pain caused by her killer Phethe Sara Simiao. The Mozambican, who worked as a welder, was found guilty of rape, kidnapping, murder and contravention of the Immigration Act in the Johannesburg high court on Friday. He pleaded guilty earlier in the day, saying he was intoxicated when, on October 21 2024, he saw the child playing on the street, took her to his backyard shack, kept her there against her will, raped and strangled her. His case was postponed to Tuesday for pre-sentencing proceedings. Amantle's mother Ntombizodwa Samane sobbed when the plea statement was read into the court record. The family's spokesperson Brenda Mjiyako said it was a heartbreaking session when they heard his version of the murder. 'It brought back the memories: of her last day, the pictures of where we found Amantle deceased, and the mortuary. 'The mother broke down, we all broke down in tears. We knew this day would come but we didn't think it would be so difficult. When they were reading, step by step what had happened, you could reflect back. It was painful.' She said what Simiao did was inhuman. 'There is no normal human being who can do what [he] did to Amantle. 'Next week, on Tuesday, is the beginning of sentencing. Her mother will be on the stand again and it is Amantle's birthday on Tuesday. It is not going to be easy,' she said. Amantle was playing with other children across the street from her home that day. Her mother was preparing clothes for her grade R graduation ceremony and completing other household chores, TimesLIVE reported previously. When she finished, she looked outside and saw Amantle was not there. She began searching and made the discovery of her child's body, partially undressed and covered in a blanket, only a few doors away. National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane welcomed the decision by Simiao to not waste the NPA and the court's time by pleading guilty. 'We look forward to the next step, which is pre-sentencing proceedings. As the state, we will prepare a victim impact report and further evidence will also be led' she said.

Fast-tracking Cornubia housing for flood victims
The building of 113 houses in Cornubia, Durban, allocated for the victims of the 2022 and 2025 floods, will reach completion over the next four months. Premier Thamasanqa Ntuli made this commitment on behalf of the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Provincial Government yesterday (14 August) during a site visit to the Cornubia Housing Development. The Cornubia Housing Development is part of a broader plan by the KZN provincial department to build 1200 houses by 2027 for families who were displaced following the 2022 and 2025 floods in Durban. Presently, displaced families reside in community halls and temporary residential units. 'The construction of these 113 houses within four months is a promise in action. By 2027, we want every flood victim in KwaZulu-Natal to live in a safe, permanent home,' said Ntuli. The province announced the allocation of R149 million for a further 692 houses that form part of this development. 'The 692 houses are scheduled for completion by December 2026, with beneficiaries expected to move in from December 2026 to January 2027,' said Ntuli. The Premier indicated social facilitation programmes would be initiated by the province together with local municipalities to engage with communities resistant to such developments in their midst. Beneficiaries of houses under government housing projects were warned not to resell or rent out their homes to non-beneficiaries. Ntuli said such actions are unlawful and anybody committing such offences will be prosecuted. 'The Department of Human Settlements, in collaboration with law enforcement agencies, will take strict legal action against offenders to protect the integrity of the resettlement programme and ensure that the rightful beneficiaries are accommodated,' said Ntuli. The Cornubia Housing Development is regarded as 'the most ambitious' post-disaster recovery initiatives in KwaZulu-Natal's history. The 2022 group of displaced flood victims were reported to have accused the government of not fulfilling their housing promises, in recent years. Robbers threaten to kill child during Northdale house break-in
A Northdale, KZN, grandmother (59) and her two-year-old grandchild were left traumatised after two masked robbers threatened to kill the child if she did not open a locked drawer in her home. The Witness reports that, according to a police source, the grandmother and her grandchild were at home on Wednesday morning when the two intruders, both wearing caps and face masks, gained entry through the unlocked front door and security gate. One of the men grabbed her granddaughter and held a knife to her throat. When she screamed, the second man pressed a knife to her neck, telling her to keep quiet. 'They took her and her granddaughter at knifepoint to the first bedroom, ordered her to open the cupboards, but found nothing of value. 'They then moved to a second, locked bedroom and demanded she unlock it. 'After searching those cupboards and finding nothing, they checked the trap door in the ceiling before taking her to the main bedroom. 'There, they saw one of the drawers had a lock and ordered her to open it. 'The suspects threatened her, making it clear they would kill her granddaughter if she refused. 'She told them to wait, retrieved the key, and unlocked the drawer,' said the police officer. Fortunately, both the grandmother and grandchild managed to break free and raise the alarm. The granddaughter freed herself and ran down the passage. 'The grandmother followed her into the kitchen, where she pressed the panic button and phoned her son. 'Shortly afterwards, her son and ADT [security officers] arrived,' he said. Meanwhile, the armed robbers fled the scene with a pink cosmetic bag containing jewellery. Mountain Rise SAPS CPF chairperson Sham Govender said they would work with police to increase patrols in the area. 'We strongly condemn this incident. As the CPF, we appeal to the community to make sure doors are locked and that residents do not place themselves in vulnerable situations. 'We are also glad the occupants were not injured in this case,' said Govender. Mountain Rise SAPS spokesperson Warrant Officer Pancheal Singh said a case of house robbery is being investigated.
