In wake of the Pahalgam terror attack, the opposition MPs want to figure out what lapses occurred in the 2019 Pulwama attack and the lessons learnt from it
Opposition members of the defence standing committee, which met on Monday, want to raise the issue of security lapses in Jammu and Kashmir.
In wake of the Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed 26 lives, the opposition MPs of this committee are likely to demand the report on the 2019 Pulwama attack. They want to figure out what lapses occurred then and what were the lessons learnt from it.
The official subject for the meeting on Monday, however, was a review on resettlement policies, healthcare facilities and avenues for ex-servicemen. For this, officials from the ministry of defence deposed before the panel.
It has been learnt that several opposition members of the committee, however, want to raise the Kashmir security issue in an upcoming meeting.
'There is no final decision on this, and we are currently considering the matter," an opposition member told News18.
In February 2019, terrorists killed 40 CRPF jawans by blowing up a vehicle carrying them on the Jammu-Srinagar highway. Jaish-e-Mohammed had claimed responsibility for the attack and, soon after, India retaliated with the Balakot airstrikes.
The defence standing committee meeting began with members observing a two-minute silence for those killed in the deadly terror strike. This panel is chaired by former Union minister Radha Mohan Singh and has several members, who attended the meeting, including leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and Sanjay Singh among others.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has chargesheeted 17 accused, including 16 absconders, in a 2024 case of attacks on CRPF camps in Chhattisgarh by CPI (Maoist) terror operatives, officials said on Saturday (June 14, 2025). One of the chargesheeted accused is under arrest, who has been identified as Sodi Baman alias Deval, they said. The absconders include two each of central committee members and special zonal/State committee members, and other top cadres of the People's Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA) Battalion No. 1, Telangana state committee, and Pamed area committee of CPI (Maoist), the officials said. The PGLA is the armed wing of CPI (Maoist). The chargesheet filed on Friday before an NIA special court in Jagdalpur, Chhattisgarh, has charged all the accused under various sections of Indian Penal Code, Arms Act, Explosive Substances Act, and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, an official statement said. The case relates to the attack on the Central Reserve Police Force's (CRPF) new camp at Dharmavaram and two adjacent CRPF/CoBRA (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action) camps at Chintawagu and Pamed in Bijapur district on January 16, 2024, it said. Armed with automatic weapons and barrel grenade launchers (BGLs), the attackers attempted to loot weapons and other belongings of the security forces from the camps, the statement said. "Twelve CRPF personnel at the Dharmavaram CRPF camp, which was set up on December 17, 2023, were injured in the attack,' it said. The NIA took over the case from the local police on February 9, 2024, and registered it against 21 named and 250-300 unknown armed cadres of proscribed terrorist organisation CPI (Maoist), the statement said. Investigations revealed that the chargesheeted accused had been involved in the recruitment of youth, as part of a criminal conspiracy to wage war against the democratically-elected government of India, the probe agency said. They were in possession of prohibited arms, ammunition and explosive materials, and had organised and attended conspiracy meetings, it said. They also established a dummy training camp as replica of the target camps, imparted training and gave motivational speeches to their armed cadres to carry out an armed rebellion, besides conducting recce of the said camps and executing the final attacks, the statement said.

CRPF is the best among paramilitary forces: Bandi Sanjay
Hyderabad / Ranchi: Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar praised the remarkable courage displayed by CRPF forces in combating separatism in the Northeastern states, Maoist activities in the Nothern states, and terrorism, including in Jammu and Kashmir. Bandi Sanjay on Friday at Jamshedpur garlanded the statue of revolutionary hero Birsa Munda and paid tribute to him. Then, visited the CRPF headquarters and inaugurated several new buildings during a ceremony attended by MP Vidyut Baran Mahato, Additional DG Amit Kumar, and officers Shalini and Saket Kumar, along with several senior police officials. A two-minute silence was observed in memory of those who lost their lives in the Ahmedabad plane crash. Bandi Sanjay, addressing the after the inauguration, stated, 'The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) is one of the best paramilitary forces in the world. It is an honour to inaugurate the new buildings at the CRPF headquarters in Jamshedpur. The services and sacrifices made by CRPF forces for the security of our country are invaluable. The CRPF is well-equipped to effectively handle a variety of challenging situations.' He inaugurated 480 Type-2 and 24 Type-3 family quarters, as well as a storage building, a tradesman's shop, a 20-bed hospital, an officers' mess, and a main barracks for 180 personnel, on a 165-acre site at the CRPF Group Headquarters in Jamshedpur. 'These residential quarters will provide a safe environment for CRPF jawans and their families, ensuring their children receive a good education and enabling the personnel to serve the country with peace of mind,' Bandi Sanjay stated.
