Brewers hungry to begin new winning streak in series finale with Mariners
No burgers for you, Brewers fans!
The Milwaukee Brewers fell shy of their 12th consecutive victory Tuesday night in Seattle, managing just two hits in a 1-0 defeat. The three-game interleague series wraps up Wednesday afternoon.
The loss deprived fans of cashing in on a promotion that dates back to the late 1940s, when the restaurant's namesake predicted a 12-game winning streak for the then-minor-league Brewers.
The deal continued when Milwaukee was home to the major-league Braves from 1953-65 and was resurrected by George Webb's son, Jim, when the Brewers came to town in 1970.
The promotion has come to fruition only twice in Brewers history -- in 1987 and 2018. The restaurant, which has locations throughout Wisconsin, gave away nearly 170,000 hamburgers over a three-day period in 1987 and about 190,000 in 2018, according to OnMilwaukee.com.
Brewers fans will go hungry because of Cal Raleigh, who accounted for the lone run with his major league-leading 39th homer of the season in the sixth inning.
"Raleigh's one of the best hitters in the game right now ... we gave up a home run to the best home-run hitter in the game," Brewers manager Pat Murphy said. "He hit a decent pitch."
Brewers phenom Jacob Misiorowski pitched 3 2/3 scoreless innings before being relieved after 64 pitches. The right-hander, who represented the National League in the All-Star Game after just his fifth major-league start, allowed three hits, walked one and struck out seven.
"You can't give him that big of a rest and then let him go out there (like) his normal start. You got to build him up, so we thought somewhere (about) 55 pitches," Murphy said. "I thought he was very good. Electric in the first inning, and then, you know, it came down a little bit and by the 50th pitch you could see his velo coming down, and you could see that he hadn't been out there in a while. So, I was very proud of what he did."
Seattle starter Logan Gilbert, a former All-Star, seemed to relish the opportunity to match up with Misiorowski.
"It's a fun challenge, especially going against their starter. He's got great stuff," Gilbert said. "It helps when you have somebody like Cal just hitting homers in the big moment."
The Brewers will look to start a new streak Wednesday when they send Quinn Priester (8-2, 3.33 ERA) to the mound against Seattle's Luis Castillo (7-5, 3.21) in a matchup of right-handers.
Priester has not lost since May 13 and defeated the host Los Angeles Dodgers 2-0 last Friday as he allowed just three hits over six innings, didn't walk a batter and struck out 10. He'll be facing the Mariners for the first time.
Castillo has won his past three starts, pitching 6 2/3 scoreless innings of three-hit ball Friday in a 6-1 victory against the visiting Houston Astros. Castillo is 4-8 with a 3.34 ERA in 18 career starts against the Brewers.

The Cowboys' offseason trade for Patriots backup Joe Milton wasn't supposed to start a quarterback controversy in Dallas, given the status of entrenched $240 million starter Dak Prescott. Just don't tell that to the fans who witnessed Milton uncork a 75-yard bomb to receiver Jalen Brooks during Tuesday's joint practice against the Los Angeles Rams at Cowboys training camp in Oxnard, California. To be clear, this wasn't a total gain of 75 yards. Milton launched the ball 75 yards through the air and into the arms of a diving Brooks in the end zone. Yes, Brooks did gain some separation with the help of a play-action fake, allowing Milton a bit more room for error downfield. Still, even given that and the fact that this pass came against backups, Milton's 75-yard toss is still nine yards longer than any completion in NFL history. According to the league's 'Next Gen Stats,' which encompasses everything dating back to 2016, the longest pass ever completed through the air during an NFL game was done so by then-Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield on a 2021 Hail Mary to Donovan Peoples-Jones. Milton beat that by five yards and did so without the benefit of an additional four steps to gather his momentum, as Mayfield had in 2021. Instead, Milton was nearly flat footed while effortlessly floating the football into the end zone. 'He needs to be a starter in the league,' one fan wrote online. 'Absolutely electric.' Another added: 'It's a matter of time.' Of course, the Cowboys are heavily invested in Prescott, who currently accounts for around 20 percent of the team's cap figure through the 2028 season. The Mississippi State product is coming off a season-ending hamstring issue that ultimately led to the Cowboys finishing 7-10 in 2024. Head coach Mike McCarthy is now gone, replaced with offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, who already has a working relationship with Prescott. Still, Milton was impressive in relief of Drake Maye at the end of his rookie season in New England, completing 22 passes for 29 yards and a touchdown in a victory over the playoff-bound Buffalo Bills. He was similarly strong during his final season at Tennessee, where he showed off his powerful right arm by completing 229 passes for 2,813 yards and 20 touchdowns. Reports: Free agent S Tracy Walker III suspended for 12 games
August 6 - Free agent safety Tracy Walker III has been suspended for the first 12 games of the NFL season, according to multiple reports on Wednesday. The NFL transaction wire was cited as the source of the suspension, but the NFL didn't reveal why Walker was disciplined. If Walker joins a team, he wouldn't be eligible to play until Week 13 at the earliest. Walker, 30, spent six seasons with the Detroit Lions (2018-23) before being released. Blue Jays dismantle Rockies 20-1 to complete sweep
August 6 - Davis Schneider hit two of Toronto's five home runs to back seven strong innings by Kevin Gausman, and the Blue Jays routed the Colorado Rockies 20-1 in Denver on Wednesday afternoon. Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Bo Bichette and Ernie Clement also went deep while Ty France reached six times -- on four hits and twice hit by a pitch. Clement and Guerrero added four hits apiece, and Bichette, Addison Barger, Tyler Heineman and Myles Straw had two hits each for Toronto, which posted a season-high runs total for the second time in the series. Schneider, Bichette and Nathan Lukes had four RBIs each. Toronto, which swept the three-game series, scored in double digits in all three games, finishing with 45 runs, 13 home runs and 63 hits in the series. Gausman (8-8) improved to 3-2 in his home state with another solid outing. He scattered three hits, fanned eight and didn't allow a runner past second base after the first inning. Ezequiel Tovar had two of Colorado's three hits in the game. The Rockies took the lead in the first when Tyler Freeman led off with a single and scored on Tovar's one-out double. Bichette hit a three-run homer in the third, his 16th of the season and third in two games, and the Blue Jays padded their lead in the fifth on Lukes' two-run triple.
