Jefferson County Sheriff's Office searching for missing man last seen in Georgia
JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) — The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's assistance locating a missing man.
Derrick Phillips, 45, has been missing since March 17. He was seen in Eastaboga, Alabama on March 17, and he was later seen in Carrolton, Georgia on March 19. Phillips has black hair and brown eyes. He is 5'6″ tall, and he weights 154 pounds.
The JCSO says that Phillips has been diagnosed with a mental health disorder and could be at risk to himself or others.
Phillips was last seen driving a Toyota Corolla with Alabama Tag Number 1AOYMN6.
Anyone with information on Phillips' whereabouts is encouraged to contact the JCSO at 205-325-1450.

would Action News Jax has been following the case since Clifton was first found dead in 1998. The case has gained national attention, in part, because of its nature. Clifton's body had been found beaten and stabbed in Phillips' waterbed. He was 14 years old at the time and was sentenced to life in prison without the chance for parole. Phillips made his first appearance inside a Duval County courtroom on Monday since 2017. During a hearing where the judge was expected to set a date to review his sentence, his recently appointed lawyers asked for at least a few months' time in preparing a case to argue for Phillips to receive a new sentence. >>> STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <<< The case they're expected to make is Phillips' age both when he committed the murder and when he was first convicted. Criminal defense attorney Chris Carson says the Florida Supreme Court has ruled against minors receiving a life sentence since Phillips' conviction. 'If someone was under the age of 18, there had to be some manner of opportunity for that person to seek recourse,' Carson said. Phillips and his lawyers had made this argument in Duval County court back in 2017, but he was resentenced to life in prison after the court rejected it. Court records show another attempt by his lawyers to have his sentence reviewed in 2020, but the Florida Supreme Court denied it. Carson tells Action News Jax he doesn't expect Phillips' sentence to change because of the nature of the murder and the attention it has received. 'The technical reality is he has to be given an opportunity to present that evidence,' said Carson, 'the practical reality is it would take some very compelling evidence for a judge to modify the sentence at this point.' Whatever case Phillips' lawyers decide to make, Carson said it could take months for them to build it. 'There can be things that involve, you know, psychologists, psychiatrists, even medical doctors. So, depending on the nature of the mitigation, that's going to dictate the timeline,' Carson said. The judge ordered that the next day, this case would go to court on July 8th. We're expecting to hear an update from Phillips' lawyers on where they are in building their case for a sentence review. 'Dangerous drink-driver' who killed woman jailed
A "dangerous drink-driver" who killed a woman and seriously injured another has been jailed for nine years and three months. Hertfordshire Police said Razvan Balasoiu, 26, was under the influence of alcohol when his BMW ploughed into a Toyota Corolla on the A602 between Stevenage and Hitchin. The Toyota's driver, a woman in her 50s, died at the scene, while a woman in a third car was seriously injured. Balasoiu, from London, previously pleaded guilty at St Albans Crown Court to causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving. The incident happened "in wet conditions" on 12 November 2023 at about 18:45 GMT. Police said Balasoiu failed to notice the road changing from a dual carriageway into a single-lane road and struck a silver Toyota Corolla travelling in the same direction. The force with which his vehicle, a black BMW 316i, struck the Corolla, caused it to spin out of control onto the opposite carriageway, where it hit a Hyundai IX35. The Hyundai's driver, a woman in her 60s, spent several months in hospital and police said she was "still recovering from the horrific life-changing injuries". Balasoiu was arrested at the scene and failed to provide a breath test at the roadside, only agreeing to a blood test hours after the collision, police said. Det Con Felicity Walker said it was "a tragic case". "As a direct result of Balasoiu's driving, which was at speed, in wet conditions, under the influence of alcohol, three families have been affected. "Drink drive and speeding are two of the fatal four, and we will never tolerate such reckless behaviour on our roads." Balasoiu was sentenced on Thursday.
