Inquiry into rogue surgeon to hold preliminary hearing next month
The Eljamel Inquiry will investigate the activities and oversight of Mr Eljamel, who was appointed by NHS Tayside as a consultant neurosurgeon at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee in 1995 and went on to become head of neurosurgery at the site.
In 2013, Mr Eljamel was placed under supervision and later suspended following concerns about the standard of clinical care he was providing to patients.
He resigned from NHS Tayside in 2014.
Patients of the former neurosurgeon have claimed he harmed as many as 200 people, with some suffering life-changing injuries.
The Eljamel Inquiry will determine, among other things, whether patients were let down by failures in clinical governance, risk management, and complaints procedures, and the adequacy of previous reviews.
It will also examine to what extent Mr Eljamel's private practice, research, and workload impacted on care received by his patients, and whether, and if so to what extent, Mr Eljamel and NHS Tayside tried to conceal evidence of sub-standard care.
The independent public inquiry, chaired by Lord Weir, will hold a preliminary hearing in Edinburgh on September 10 to set out its progress and intentions.
Scotland's Health Secretary Neil Gray formally set up the inquiry on April 3, empowering it to begin the process of gathering evidence.
To date, Lord Weir has designated applicants including NHS Tayside, 133 former patients of Mr Eljamel and 19 personal representatives of former patients. This group is represented by the legal firm Levy & McRae.
The Scottish Government and the University of Dundee are also designated as core participants, as are the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh), Healthcare Improvement Scotland, and NHS Education for Scotland.
Members of the public, including former patients, can apply to attend the preliminary hearing in person.
Proceedings will also be broadcast live on the inquiry's YouTube channel, and will be available to view later on its website.
The preliminary hearing will take place at Waverley Gate in central Edinburgh.

Back in 2013 plans for new a £22m hospital in a North Wales seaside town were backed by Welsh Government. Under the proposal the 30 bed facility on the site of the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Rhyl, would have opened in 2016. But nine years after that projected opening date and the scheme for a new hospital alongside a revamp of the existing building has still not started. Planning was secured in 2020 but the Covid pandemic and subsequent spiralling inflation saw it stall. Now a "paired-back" scheme has been put out to consultation by Betsi Cadwaladr health board ahead of a planning application being submitted. A planning statement said: "Planning permission for a previous design scheme for a new community hospital building at the site was originally granted permission back in 2020. However , progression of the previous redevelopment scheme was hit by implications from the Covid pandemic, and in-turn significant increased development costs. "Consequently, the original proposals were found to be unaffordable, and therefore the proposals have had to be rethought. In the interim period, BCUHB's development and project teams have been working hard to plan a development which will both meet the changing needs of our population and provide value for the public money being spent. "The proposed new building would represent a significant investment for the Royal Alexandra Rhyl campus to complement the retained facilities. The development proposals presented are for a new three storey community hospital building. Ground and first floor levels will accommodate the new healthcare facilities, with the second floor limited to accommodating necessary mechanical plant to serve the building. The statement added: "A separate programme of refurbishment and improvement works to the existing grade II listed main Royal Alexandra Hospital building are also planned to go ahead separately to the new building proposals. These refurbishment works will be the subject of a separate application in due course." Leader of the Welsh Conservatives and Clwyd West MS Darren Millar said: "Twelve years ago, the people of North Denbighshire were promised this incredible new hospital which would relieve pressures on Ysbyty Glan Clwyd and greatly improve the patient experience. 'The project has been beset by delays since the estimated costs ballooned and people have been left wondering whether the promised new facility would ever materialise. "Now, we have been insulted with massively scaled back plans, even though pressures at Glan Clwyd are worse than they were twelve years ago. "This is totally unacceptable, and the Welsh Government must now deliver on its many pre-election promises. Anything less will be an insult to people in the locality. "The Welsh Government has spent tens of millions on 20mph speed limits, unnecessary overseas offices, and tree planting in Africa, so money is no excuse for not giving us what we were promised. 'Given the dire state of health services here in North Wales, they should be looking at increasing the number of hospital beds, not slashing them." The Lewisham butcher's with mouse droppings and meat stored on the floor
Mice droppings and meat stored on the floor were among the hygiene breaches discovered at a Lewisham butcher's that has been handed the lowest possible food hygiene rating. Environmental health officers awarded the business, at 110 Lewisham High Street, a score of zero out of five following a routine inspection. The butchers is officially registered as M.A Butchers but is listed on Google as 'M&M Quality Halal Meat.' The inspection was carried out under the Food Standards Agency (FSA) framework, which assesses hygienic food handling, cleanliness of facilities, and food safety management. Scores range from zero, meaning urgent improvement is required, to five, the highest possible rating. According to the inspection report, 'very poor standards' were found throughout the premises, with many problems being repeat offences from previous visits. Bags of meat obstructed the wash hand basin, which had no hand drying facilities. This issue, the report states, was also highlighted in the last inspection. Cardboard boxes were found on the flooring in the butcher's counter area, which the report states "is not hygienic." Mice droppings were also noted in various areas of the premises, including on shelving next to prepacked food and in the butcher's counter. The report states: "Please remove all droppings and clean and sanitise all areas. 'Mice activity was also detected at the last inspection. 'You must contact the services of a reputable pest contractor and carry out daily checks for fresh pest activity.' "Very poor cleaning standards" were noted throughout, including dirty ceiling tiles, flooring, shelving, and a dirty staff toilet. A deep clean of the whole premises is required, the report states. Overloaded freezers were also identified as an issue, with bags of frozen chicken stored outside of the freezer at the front of the premises, which were getting defrosted. The overloaded walk-in freezer was recorded as being at -12.1 degrees. The report also states: "Although staff have recently completed food hygiene training, the standards observed during today's visit are concerning. Google is displayed as M.M Quality Halal Meats. The butchers currently have a mix of different Google reviews with the average rating being 3.3 out of 5 from 12 reviews. A year ago, Edi Buck said the butchers had "helpful staff, decent prices, nice meat, open late". The News Shopper attempted to contact the number listed on Google and the home number advertised on the shop roof but we did not hear back.

Young south Essex woman to run half marathon after life-changing accident
A young Rayleigh woman is set to take on a half marathon to raise money for the hospital that helped her walk again following a devastating accident. Chloe Hooper, now 23, sustained a severe spinal injury when she fell from a tree at a scout camp at just 12 years old. After initially being taken to a hospital in the area, Chloe was referred to the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, as she had fractured her back in four places. Chloe needed to have life-changing spinal fusion surgery - which involved two rods and eight screws. However, thanks to the pioneering treatment, she recovered and even regained the ability to walk.
