Iraq's Intelligence Chief reveals talks with Syrian officials
Shafaq News / On Sunday, Iraqi Intelligence Chief Hamid Al-Shatri revealed the key messages he delivered to Syria's transitional president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, during a meeting in December.
Al-Shatri confirmed that communication with Syria's new administration remains ongoing to establish a security framework addressing ISIS, the Al-Hol camp, Syrian military weaponry, and the inclusion of Syria's diverse communities in its future governance.
Iraq-Syria Security Talks
Speaking at the Baghdad International Forum, Al-Shatri stressed that Iraq's priority is to protect its national interests, and that developments in Syria 'affect not only Iraq but the region,' citing continued 'security vulnerabilities.'
He expressed hope that Syria's transition would 'mark a new beginning,' noting that Damascus had sent 'positive signals' and provided insights into the unfolding situation.
Concerns Over Security Threats
Al-Shatri explained that his visit to Damascus and talks with Al-Sharaa were based on 'strategic considerations,' emphasizing that Iraq 'had never been fully aligned with Bashar Al-Assad's long-standing security threat of a regime.'
'Iraq suffered the most from Al-Assad's rule, as his regime facilitated the entry of hundreds of suicide bombers and extremist fighters to Iraq,' he said.
'Our messages to al-Sharaa conveyed Iraq's support for the Syrian people's aspirations while raising critical issues, including how the new administration intends to engage with its Kurd, Shia, and Alawite communities, who share ties with Iraq.'
ISIS Threat and Military Concerns
Al-Shatri highlighted Iraq's concerns about ISIS-controlled areas, particularly the Al-Hol camp, which houses around 30,000 individuals from 60 nationalities, as well as 4,000 ISIS fighters detained in Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) prisons, including 2,000 Iraqis.
He also warned of the potential for Syrian military weapons to fall into the hands of rogue armed factions, reaffirming Iraq's ongoing engagement with Syria's new leadership to establish a mutually acceptable security framework.
Iraq's Cautious Stance
Iraq has yet to officially acknowledge Syria's political transition. However, Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein recently told France 24 that he had invited Syria's transitional president, Ahmed Al-Sharaa, to a regional summit Iraq plans to host in May, along with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shibani, who was invited to visit Baghdad 'soon.'

Al-Awlaki urged Muslims to revive the "tradition of assassinations," describing it as the "greatest form of Jihad today." He said the targets should be the "leaders of apostasy," whom he labeled "Jewish Arabs," specifically naming the leaders of Egypt, Jordan, and the Gulf states. He appealed directly to military personnel in Arab countries, calling on them to take action. He said Arab pilots should strike "the Jews," U.S. military bases in the region, and American aircraft carriers. At the very least, he said, they should attack the palaces of Arab leaders, describing these as the "initial steps" that must be taken. Al-Awlaki claimed there are 4.5 million Muslims in the United States and said that they should carry out acts of retaliation without hesitation, stating: "Do not consult anyone about killing infidel Americans." Speaking over images of Manhattan skyscrapers, he said that the list of targets should be "effective," and declared: "There are no red lines." He called for attacks on U.S. government institutions such as the Senate, companies that support Israel or the U.S. military, including Microsoft and Elon Musk's businesses, and he urged hackers to strike both the American and Gulf economies. Al-Awlaki cited individuals who had carried out violence in the U.S., including Thomas Crooks, who attempted to assassinate Donald Trump in July 2024; Elias Rodriguez, who killed two Israeli embassy staffers in Washington, D.C. in May 2025; and Aaron Bushnell, who self-immolated in protest of U.S. support for Israel. Al-Sudani's visit to Al-Anbar: Political and developmental messages
Shafaq News/ Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani paid a visit to Al-Anbar province, in what political observers and local sources described as a gesture loaded with messages of support, balance, and national development. Al-Sudani arrived in Al-Anbar earlier on Sunday, where he met with several tribal leaders at the start of his tour. Although not part of an official government agenda, the visit was closely watched by political actors in the province. Sources from Al-Anbar told Shafaq News that the visit had been planned for over a month but was postponed due to a prior trip by a senior figure within the Coordination Framework, the leader of the Wisdom Movement (Al-HiKma) Ammar al-Hakim. The delay aimed to avoid framing the prime minister's visit as politically or electorally motivated. One source stated that the meeting with tribal sheikhs was intended as a 'friendly and direct' interaction, signaling support for local efforts to maintain stability and prevent Al-Anbar from becoming aligned with any single political faction. 'This is about preserving balance—particularly ahead of elections on November,' the source noted. IAEA director accuses Iran of breaching trust
Shafaq News/ On Monday, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, accused Iran of undermining cooperation by secretly obtaining and analyzing classified UN nuclear documents. Grossi confirmed that the incident dated back several years and was detailed in a confidential agency report circulated to member states on May 31. The report stated the IAEA had 'conclusive evidence' that Iranian authorities had actively collected and reviewed highly sensitive agency materials. Grossi emphasized, 'Such actions are clearly incompatible with the spirit of cooperation.'
