Health district celebrates Women's Month with wellness, empowerment
On August 8, the women gathered at the Dekker Street Hall, and the WRDHS chairperson for the women's forum, Argyle Shabalala, explained that this was a commemoration for the employees' health and wellness.
There were around 150 attendees, where empowering topics such as marriage contracts and breast and bra awareness.
She describes the day not as excitement, but empowerment, which destresses them and lets them know they do not have to carry everything alone.
'There is a saying that a woman holds the knife by the sharp end, which emphasises their strength, and we want to destigmatise this, and that women can also be soft,' she concluded.

Johannesburg Junior Council hosts inspiring Women's Day event at Holy Family College
The Johannesburg Junior Council (JJC) hosted a Women's Day empowerment conference at Holy Family College in Parktown on August 2. JJC members and members of the community gathered to honour the strength and stories of women at the event titled: The Power of Her Voice. Entry was R20, with all proceeds donated to the Chayil Foundation, an organisation that supports survivors of gender-based violence through safe housing, mentorship, and skills development. JJC member Lesedi Moletsane, from Roedean School, said the foundation was chosen for its work with women and girls affected by trauma. Oliver Bouilliart, co-mayor of the JJC and a learner at St John's College, said the council wanted to create a platform that acknowledged and amplified women's voices. 'Too often, women's voices are overlooked in society. In our council, we see their strength and leadership every day. This conference was a chance to celebrate that, and call for greater recognition.' The programme featured three guest speakers who shared their personal and professional journeys: Tebogo Magato, co-founder of a training organisation, spoke about digital inclusion, leadership, and youth empowerment across business, government, and academia, Karen Landi, co-founder of Community Hours, highlighted how her platform has grown from 750 volunteers to more than 10 000 young people contributing to community service. Her work in child advocacy and leadership was also shared, and Robin Le Roux, founder of the Trial Foundation, discussed the importance of resilience and healing. Her organisation has supported vulnerable communities since 2014 with food, clothing, mentorship, and rehabilitation programmes. After the presentations, a panel discussion was held, moderated by outreach committee members Kaley Govindasamy and Tagara Mwewa. The floor was opened for audience questions and engagement. Tagara, a learner at St Andrew's School for Girls, said the event reflected the heart of the JJC's outreach work. 'The speakers shared powerful stories of perseverance. They reminded us that it's possible to make an impact despite hardship.' Kaley added that the discussion aimed to spark connection and action. 'We wanted this to go beyond just listening. It was about igniting change.' Lesedi noted the event was inclusive. 'Both men and women must be part of the conversation. Equality requires shared responsibility.' The event, organised by JJC members through school networks, created a space where women's voices were heard and celebrated. CoE runs fire safety awareness campaign during Women's Day in Gauteng
While everyone celebrated Women's Day, CoE officials engaged communities in a fire safety awareness campaign. The awareness campaign ran from 08:00 to noon, with phenomenal attendance. DEMS officials and the Gauteng Fire and Emergency Services, under the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs as provincial sister departments, shared safety messages with the communities. ALSO READ: DEMS issues urgent fire safety warning With the recent low temperatures in Gauteng, the campaign came at the right time. 'Making matters worse, conditions were aggravated by rainfall. This made the weather unbearable for most residents. 'Because the cold front persisted for a few more days, heat appliance safety tips became a priority during the presentation,' said DEMS spokesperson William Ntladi. DEMS officials shared these safety tips: • Always have a responsible adult monitor heaters; • Switch off air conditioners and any heating appliances if there is no adult available; • Do not leave children alone around heaters; • Keep combustibles at least 1m away from heaters; • For those using braziers, fireplaces or coal stoves, keep windows or doors open to allow gaseous exchange. Carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide are toxic and can lead to death. ALSO READ: DEMS intensifies winter safety awareness across Ekurhuleni 'Should there be more rainfall, those near water streams need to be extremely cautious because flooding might affect them,' said Ntladi. Addressing the packed school hall, South African free-diving champion and founder of I AM WATER Foundation, Hanli Prinsloo shared her journey with the learners. She spoke candidly about the challenges she overcame and encouraged the girls to hold onto their dreams, remain focused, and believe in their ability to shape their futures. Each learner received a gift pack filled with practical goodies they need for school and personal care – an act that drew smiles, laughter, and heartfelt thanks from the students.
