‘Together' Director Explains How that Wild Final Shot Was Made (Without AI)

Gizmodo7 hours ago
Ever since its debut at Sundance earlier this year, fans of horror have had Michael Shanks' new film, Together, on their radars. Neon picked it up out of the festival and, after some really creepy trailers and marketing, opened it in theaters last weekend with solid results. It's a provocative, surprising, and incredibly disgusting movie with an ending viewers will not soon forget. An ending that was achieved through traditional methods of visual effects and without a hint of AI.As per that spoiler warning above, we're about to explain what happens at the end of Together, so if you haven't seen it and want to, we urge you to look away right now.
In the film Tim and Millie (Dave Franco and Alison Brie) get infected by this unexplained force that wants their bodies to become one. The how and why behind it is pretty weird, mysterious, and fun, but eventually, the couple realize the only way to defeat this force is to give in to it. And so we watch as their bodies combine from two into one, and, in the film's final shot, a completely new person, the amalgamation of both of them, opens the door to Millie's visiting parents.
Speaking on Indiewire's Filmmaker Toolkit Podcast, Shanks explained that both the blending of the bodies and the new character were achieved without the use of AI. 'The amount of screenings I've gone to now, and people come up to me and say, 'Was that AI at the end?' It's just so crazy that people assume AI is now the cause. We've used absolutely none of it on this film,' Shanks said. 'As a VFX guy, as somebody that's worked with all these teams that put in so much work, it's so frustrating now that people look at something that looks interesting or good, and they [assume] just a computer made it. It's like, 'No, no, no, no, no.''
Instead, the 'Tillie' character was created using makeup and visual effects compositing by Genevieve Camilleri. 'In pre-production, Gen just went up and took photos of Dave and Alison and then in Nuke, she made a bunch of variations on which elements to take from which of their faces to figure out what is essential to seeing both of them in that final image,' Shanks said.
Then, on the day, the director shot the scene with both actors. 'After we shot the scene with Alison, we moved in Dave, with a bunch of dots on his face,' he continued. 'Gen has taken his jaw and his lips and stuck that onto the bottom [of the face]. It's really a combination of makeup and, you wouldn't call it CGI, because nothing's computer-generated, but it's compositing.'
Stepping back a bit from the specifics of Together, it's wild that Shanks has to defend that his film didn't use generative AI. If it had come out even just 3-4 years ago, it would not have even been a thought. We all would've just assumed it was one of them dressing up as the other or visual effects. Ultimately, it's kind of both. But the whole conversation changed when we began living in a world where you can put 'Dave Franco and Alison Brie as one person' into a program and get something back in seconds. Basically, props to Shanks for doing something right, working hard at it, and making something memorable. And boo to the world for making us forget that the real magic of filmmaking comes from the human touch.
Together is now in theaters.

Ed Kelce Shares Photo with Taylor Swift and His Girlfriend Maureen Maguire as He Mourns Her Death

Kelce's partner, Maureen Anne Maguire, died on Aug. 1 at age 74NEED TO KNOW Ed Kelce shared a throwback photo with Taylor Swift and his girlfriend Maureen Anne Maguire as he mourned her death on Aug. 1 at age 74 The photo, which was shared on Maureen's obituary page, featured the smiling trio decked out in Kansas City Chiefs merchandise Ed previously opened up about meeting Swift with Maureen, and previously recalled a funny interaction the three had togetherEd Kelce is looking back on sweet photos from the past as he mourns the death of his girlfriend, Maureen Anne Maguire. The father of Travis, 35, and Jason Kelce, 37, shared a throwback picture of himself posing with Taylor Swift and Maguire, who died on Aug. 1 at age 74. Uploaded to her obituary page, the image pictured Ed and Maureen smiling alongside Travis' girlfriend Swift. The trio are decked out in Kansas City Chiefs attire in support of the star tight end's team. Swift, who wore a Chiefs crewneck sweatshirt, is seen holding up a friendship bracelet in one hand and a card that reads "Taylor Swift" in the other. Ed and Maureen, who were standing next to the pop superstar in the photo, wore jerseys with Travis' number 87 on them. In February 2024, Ed shared in an interview with the Los Angeles Times how Maureen had been getting to know Swift. He revealed a funny interaction between the pair shortly after they met. While Swift, 35, was posing for a picture with Ed, Maureen joked, "Hey, that's my boyfriend," to which the singer laughed. In January 2024, Ed revealed on Audacy's 92.3 The Fan in Cleveland how he couldn't recall Swift's name during an early interaction at Travis' home and Maguire had to remind him of who she was. "When Travis has a lot of friends coming into town to go to the game, everyone meets at his house, although he's not there,' Ed said on the show, noting that there can often be up to 20 people there before a home game. 'They have a shuttle that comes and picks everybody up and takes them to the game," said Ed, who went on to say that he had probably met some of those in attendance "but cannot for the life of me picture, remember who they are." "And Taylor comes in, walks in with a security guard and I look at her ... and I had my girlfriend with me and I mention to Maureen, 'Oh, my God, I know this kid but I don't know what her name is.' Geez, you know, like a real idiot,' he shared. Maureen then said to him, he recalled, "'You don't know her? This is Taylor Swift, you idiot.' " On Aug. 2, Ed announced the news that Maureen had died by sharing a link to an obituary on his personal Facebook page. According to the obituary, Maureen "passed away peacefully surrounded by her loved ones" and described her as a 'devoted mother' with "impeccable taste." Ed was described as Maguire's "beloved friend," with the obituary noting how she would attend games with the devoted football dad. "She also grew an unexpected love for football later in life, sharing many laughs and adventures with her beloved friend Ed Kelce and her loyal dog Butch," the obituary from Stretch Funeral Home in the suburbs of Philadelphia read. "Together, they traveled often and attended football games and concerts, and embraced every opportunity to enjoy life to the fullest," it continued. Maureen was also described as a "natural hostess," per the obituary. "She was famous for throwing the best parties, always full of warmth, laughter, and unforgettable food." Ed was married to Jason and Travis' mom Donna Kelce for 25 years after they wed in the late '70s. They divorced in 2011, and Ed explained that they had stayed together for their sons. 'If we had split as we probably both would have preferred, that would have been a nightmare with the logistics, getting kids where they had to be and providing all the support,' Ed explains in the 2023 documentary Kelce. Per the obituary, Maureen leaves behind three children, six grandchildren, her brother John and her sister Loretta. Read the original article on People

Sequel To Beloved 80s Movie About To Be Greenlit

A vast number of movies and shows from the 1980s have been revived in some form or another. One surprising movie from the 80s has yet to have received a new sequel in decades. However, that could soon change, especially based on recent reports. In fact, it looks like the sequel to this beloved 80s movie is about to be greenlit. It was previously reported that the studio behind the film, Warner Bros., was developing a follow-up to this classic IP of theirs. Of course, such statements had been made in the past. What seems to have changed, however, is the success of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice – which convinced the studio that there is a market for sequels to their older or dormant properties. This was confirmed by the star of the original film and its initial sequel, Zach Galligan, who opened up about the status on the project via ComicMovieDB on TikTok. The below video features Galligan talking about the project: '…after thirty-five years, they've come up with a script. Warner Bros. is incredibly interested in doing it. Apparently it's waiting upon Mr. Spielberg to read it and approve it.' @comicmoviedb #gremlinsmovie #reboot is happening! #zachgalligan #exclusive #stevenspielberg #gremlinsontiktok #gremlins #gremlins2 #gremlins1984 ♬ original sound – Comic Movie DB Fans of Gremlins and Gremlins 2: The New Batch will no doubt be excited by this news. While Gremlins 3 still doesn't have a greenlight, this is the most promising news so far, especially with the recent release of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice . In fact, the studio similarly already greenlit Goonies 2 , so it makes sense an announcement regarding Gremlins 3 could be just around the corner. In this case, it looks like producer Steven Spielberg just needs to approve the script. As for what the story could be about, that's anyone's guess, though this franchise hasn't been completely abandoned. In recent years, Gremlins was expanded into an animated series, so far with two seasons respectively subtitled Secrets of the Mogwai and The Wild Batch . They each took a more fantastical approach to the Gremlins mythos, providing a backstory for the iconic Mogwai creatures, and establishing the existence of other supernatural creatures. While Gremlins 3 could easily tackle some of the lore present in the animated series, a more direct sequel to the original film is also possible, with an emphasis on Zach Galligan's Billy and his continued ownership of Gizmo. Fans would no doubt appreciate a return to basics and a gremlin outbreak that features just as many scares as it does laughs, much like the first Gremlins film had to offer. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding Gremlins 3 as we have it. Hopefully this potential sequel to the beloved 80s horror comedy classic can finally get off the ground.

Donald Trump Blasts Taylor Swift While Praising Sydney Sweeney

President Donald Trump has taken a side regarding the American Eagle campaign which recently became the subject of backlash and divisiveness on social media. As it turns out, Trump was rather supportive of Sydney Sweeney and her involvement in the campaign, emphasizing that she starred in what he calls the 'hottest' commercial. He released these statements not long after Sydney Sweeney was revealed to have registered as a Republican in Florida. On that subject, Trump also had something to say, claiming that 'being woke is for losers.' The comments were made on Truth Social, where he also took the opportunity to simultaneously call out celebrity Taylor Swift for not sharing the same political standings as Sweeney. Here's what he first shared on Truth Social via The Times regarding Sweeney: 'Sydney Sweeney, a registered Republican, has the 'hottest' ad out there. It's for American Eagle, and the jeans are 'flying off the shelves'. Go get 'em Sydney!' To that end, this is what he said regarding Taylor Swift: 'Ever since I alerted the world as to what she was by saying on TRUTH that I can't stand her (HATE!). She was booed out of the Super Bowl and became NO LONGER HOT. The tide has seriously turned — Being WOKE is for losers, being Republican is what you want to be. Thank you for your attention to this matter!' Although Donald Trump has had plenty to say regarding Sydney Sweeney and the way her American Eagle campaign has been received, Sweeney herself has yet to comment on the matter. With the ad campaign reusing the pun that Sweeney has 'great jeans,' a nod to having 'great genes,' it's something that some viewers have interpreted as Nazi propaganda. For now, Sweeney has chosen to stay clear of the controversy, and even American Eagle has taken a more lighthearted approach to rectifying the situation. Now that Donald Trump has publicly discussed his enthusiasm for the advertisement while also slamming Taylor Swift, we'll have to see how this situation continues. For now, it's likely not the last we've heard about the American Eagle campaign or the controversies it has now started.
