
Adivasis don't need ‘saviours'. We just need people to hear us when we speak for ourselves
That's a question I have heard often. For those asking, it may be an 'innocent confusion'. For me, it is an unexplainable discomfort at the intersection of identity, faith, and ignorance. Their ignorance.
This ignorance is rooted in a larger issue: The need to view Adivasis through a constructed idea exclusive of what the community wants. It assumes that our religious identity and our Adivasi identity cannot co-exist unless someone else decides it for us.
But the truth is, the faith I choose is independent of my identity as an Adivasi.
Over time, there have been narratives formed about Adivasis and their 'appropriate' religion — Adivasis are Hindus, and Adivasis must have been forcefully converted, usually to Christianity.
Both of these narratives have been deeply politicised. As a result, these discourses control how others see us and how the state treats us. They strip us of our agency; our right to make choices about our lives, our culture, and our beliefs.
The right-wing outrage over the nuns, who were arrested in Chhattisgarh for allegedly forcefully converting Adivasi girls, is offensive to me, as a Santhal practicing Christianity. These accusations portray us as being weak and easily misled. It not only attacks the integrity of Christianity, but also forms a narrative that we are unaware of what we believe in, or what we are doing.
But that is not who we are.
In contrast to the mainstream image of Adivasis as 'backward' or 'primitive,' we are capable of understanding our identities and making our own choices. We are not passive receivers of culture or religion. We examine, we question, and we decide. And most importantly, we choose.
As a Christian, I can confidently say that no one drags you into the faith. The scripture does not teach to force a cross on someone else's forehead. If someone does that, they are not aware of what their own faith looks like. Christianity, like any religion, when practiced truthfully, begins with choice, consent, and peace.
This diversity of belief within my community is real and practical. I practice Christianity, as do many of my Adivasi friends. Others worship nature and follow ancestral traditions, such as Sarna. Some relatives follow Hinduism. Many do a mix of both.
But our lives — our rituals, our gods, even our Census entries — have been politicised for a while. The consequences may vary in extent and degree, but the greatest loss in all the chaos is the loss of our agency as Adivasis.
Looking back at history, it's clear Adivasis were not born as Hindus or Christians. As we moved forward with the world, we adapted. We were subjected to different faiths — some of us converted to Christianity, others to Hinduism, aspects of both, and other religions as well. These were willing choices; this is us practicing agency.
What is not acceptable is when others try to define our identity for us, claiming 'Adivasis are Hindus' or 'Adivasis are being converted forcefully.'
We do not need anyone deciding which religion is best suited for us.
The state, too, has played a role in this confusion. Under Section 3 of the Protection of Civil Rights Act, Adivasis (along with Buddhists, Sikhs, and Jains) are 'deemed to be Hindus' unless they explicitly identify otherwise. This may look like an act of integration to protect us from discrimination, but it has serious effects.
Sociologist and author Virginius Xaxa, in his article 'Politics of Language, Religion and Identity: Tribes in India', states that before Independence, tribal communities were often listed in the Census as animists or as practising tribal religions. This, however, changed after Independence — they were automatically counted as Hindus if they didn't identify with any major religion.
Historically, Adivasis converted to other religions due to spiritual inclination, the desire to move up the social chain, or to gain economic security, often with awareness.
But the administration, through bureaucratic categorisation, took away the agency and freedom from Adivasis to choose their religion.
Xaxa also highlights the paradox of the system: On the one hand, it has provisions to protect and promote tribal culture. On the other, it systemically absorbs Adivasis into the larger mainstream society, thus stifling their right to practice their choices.
The problem isn't our diversity or our belief systems.
The problem is people — activists, politicians, government officials — trying to be our saviours, trying to consolidate us into a single category.
We do not need saviours. We self-govern. We fight authority when needed, protect our land, defend our communities, and build systems that balance rural and urban life.
We have been vocal. We are speaking. All we need is to be heard.

SP expels partyman involved in Fatehpur incident?
Lucknow: Fatehpur district president of Samajwadi Party , Surendra Prarap Singh, on Tuesday expelled party functionary Pappu Singh Chauhan of Hussainganj. As per the official memo issued by Surendra Singh, Pappu was expelled for anti- party activity. However reports said Chauhan's name has figured as an accused in the Fatehpur incident. Unconfirmed reports said he was part of the mob that hoisted saffron flags atop the mausoleum. On Tuesday, a video surfaced on social media where a man identifying himself as Pappu Singh Chauhan announced that he has resigned from SP because the party had betrayed his trust. He said in Fatehpur district the party was being run by Muslims. Claiming to be a Hindu and a Sanatani, Chauhan in the video said he will always raise issues concerning the Hindus irrespective of the objections raised by "them" - in an apparent reference to SP's Fatehpur district unit. It could not be verified if the man in the video was the same Pappu Singh Chauhan who was expelled from SP. Or, the same person named in the FIR in connection with Fatehpur incident. A Forgotten Chapter Of Partition: Genocide Of Hindus-Sikhs In Alibeg Prison

Even more shocking is the fact that we have conveniently forgotten it — and so has the world. This is the story of the brutal killing of nearly 5,000 innocent Hindus and Sikhs in Alibeg prison between 1947 and 1948. Alibeg prison is located in Mirpur, a city which is currently part of Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. The city, which had a predominantly Hindu and Sikh population, was attacked by Muslim tribesmen and the Pakistani army on 25 November 1947, when more than 18,000 Hindus and Sikhs were slaughtered in a single day. Around 5,000 Hindus and Sikhs were taken to Alibeg prison. Before that, around 10,000 of them were slaughtered during their march to this prison. K.R. Sudhakar Rao has shared some gory details of the genocide that took place at Alibeg prison in Whispers of the Unknown Kashmir Files (pp. 24–27): 'Alibeg was just two miles from the Pakistani border. A Sikh gurdwara was converted into a prison, and five thousand people were imprisoned there. The Pakistani army turned it into a slaughterhouse. For the first 20 days, 50 to 100 people were taken out of the gurdwara every night and shot dead. By the end of December, around 2,000 people had been massacred. Another 1,000 people — the very young and the very old — died of disease, anxiety, and fear." In January 1948, the International Red Cross arrived at Alibeg prison, and the pathetic conditions and brutalities inflicted on Hindus and Sikhs came to light. According to Rao, Sardar Lal Singh Kakkar of Mirpur, along with some others, went to meet Mahatma Gandhi about the heart-breaking conditions of Hindu and Sikh refugees in Alibeg prison. It was January 27, 1948. They asked Gandhiji to save the Hindus of Alibeg. He replied that there was snowfall there, so the army could not go. But the locals told Gandhi that there was no snowfall in Mirpur. Gandhi and Nehru did not utter a single word. They returned, feeling as though they had interacted with a rock or a stone. After that, they wanted to meet Gandhi again and appeal to him to save the Hindus of Alibeg. In the meantime, Gandhi was assassinated. Bal K. Gupta, who was imprisoned as a 10-year-old in Alibeg prison until his rescue in March 1948, documented what happened there in his memoirs — probably the only first-hand account of the events in Alibeg prison. Gupta recorded: 'It took the Red Cross a day to count us. They packed everyone into 60 trucks and brought them to Jammu. Hindus and Sikhs, fearing they would miss the buses, did not care for food but stood in queues. Finally, on March 18, 1948, sixteen hundred Hindus and Sikhs were brought to the railway station called Sarai Alamgir. They stuffed them in coaches and brought them to Jammu. We had no food, no water, no lights in the compartments. They put another 150 people from the Datial camp on the same train. One of them was Krishna Mehta; she later became MP from Jammu and Kashmir." The journey back to India wasn't easy, even after being rescued from the hell named Alibeg prison. Gupta recalled the train journey of the Hindus and Sikhs who had survived: 'A few hours later, a mob of Muslims attacked the women who had come from Datial camp. They tried to kidnap the women. But when the women screamed loudly, the police and other men ran to save them. No one could sleep that night. The next day, the train left at 5 a.m. and reached Lahore by noon. In Lahore, Muslim fanatics had already massacred many Hindu refugees in train coaches. That day too, armed thugs gathered to attack them, but they could not get inside." 'That day the train stopped in Lahore all day. There was no way to get off the coach even to drink water. The Pakistani authorities did not make any arrangements. We somehow managed to save our breath with the only hope that we would reach India by dawn. Finally, on the evening of March 19, the train moved. At around 5 p.m., we crossed the Wagah border. As soon as we reached Attari (Indian territory), Hindus and Sikhs kissed the ground beneath their feet. The Sikhs in Attari prepared food for the refugees. That was the last train from Pakistan," he added. Rao summarised this blood-soaked chapter of our forgotten history aptly: 'The world is still discussing Auschwitz, Cambodia, Serbia, and Srebrenica. Why doesn't anyone remember Alibeg? Because we ourselves have forgotten Alibeg. How will the world remember if we ourselves forget it?" The writer is an author and columnist.
