Karnataka Assembly Passes Crowd Control Bill 2 Months After Chinnaswamy Stadium Stampede

Last Updated: Key provisions of the bill include a strong emphasis on accountability and safety, mandating several requirements for event organisers In a significant legislative move, the Karnataka assembly has passed the 2025 Crowd Control Bill. The new law comes two months after the stampede at the Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 4 during an event to celebrate the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) winning the Indian Premier League (IPL). The incident that killed 11 people and injured many others prompted the government to establish a robust legal framework for public gatherings. The bill was introduced by state home minister Dr G Parameshwara and has been cleared by the assembly. Key provisions of the bill include a strong emphasis on accountability and safety, mandating several requirements for event organisers. Mandatory Event Details and Safety Measures Event organisers are now required to submit a comprehensive application for an event permit. This application must include detailed information on the purpose of the event, the anticipated crowd size, clear outline of the safety measures and protocols that will be implemented to ensure the crowd's well-being and prevent any mishaps. The new law gives district magistrates the authority to postpone, cancel, or change the venue of an event if there's a risk of public unrest or breach of peace. The bill also includes stringent penalties for violations. Organisers who fail to comply with the law may face imprisonment for up to three years and fines up to Rs 5 lakh. In cases of injury or death due to negligence, the organiser is liable to pay compensation. The passing of this bill is seen as a crucial step by the Karnataka government to prevent future tragedies and ensure the safety of citizens at large-scale events. view comments First Published: August 21, 2025, 04:26 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Cricket Asia Cup: Gill Returns as the Vice-Captain

Test skipper Shubman Gill's return to vice-captaincy in T20Is was the only major decision the national selectors took while announcing the squad for the Asia Cup on Tuesday, as the wise men chose not to tinker much with a successful combination. While most members of the squad for the continental bash—due to be held in the United Arab Emirates from September 9–28—picked themselves, the major point of deliberation was: Would Gill return to T20Is and, if so, would he replace Axar Patel as the vice-captain? Well, both those questions were answered with an emphatic 'yes' by the selection committee headed by Ajit Agarkar. Gill, who last played a T20I in the bilateral series in Sri Lanka where he was the deputy to Suryakumar Yadav, has been in impressive form since the IPL, and the selectors just couldn't ignore the current superstar of Indian cricket. However, his return will force a change in a settled batting order. Gujarat Titans' captain Gill scored 650 runs in this season's IPL, and he carried that blistering form to England in the five-Test series where he hammered four centuries en route to amassing a record 754 runs. 'The last time when he played T20Is for India, post the T20 World Cup (2024), when we went to Sri Lanka (in July 2024), not the tour of Zimbabwe. I was leading then and he was the vice-captain and that's when we started a new cycle for the next T20 World Cup,' said skipper Suryakumar at a press conference at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai.'After that he got busy with all the Test series at home. He did not get the opportunity to play T20 cricket because he got busy playing Test cricket and also the Champions Trophy. He is there in the squad now and we are happy to have him,' he added. With Gill's return, the management has a tough decision to make in figuring out who opens with the Punjabi. During Gill's absence, Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson racked up runs in blistering fashion, and forcing one of them to drop down the order could be a hard call. Another option is to play Gill at one-drop, which would mean sacrificing the talented Tilak Varma, who scored two back-to-back unbeaten centuries in the series against South Africa last November. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar welcomed the selection headache, saying it's Suryakumar and head coach Gautam Gambhir's problem to solve: 'There are more options for the top order now and Shubman has been in great form anyway. When they get to Dubai, they can decide on the playing XI according to the opposition and the conditions. It's their headache to pick the batting line-up, ours was to pick the 15.' Beyond Gill, there weren't any major surprises, barring the inclusion of lead pacer Jasprit Bumrah. While there wasn't much doubt about his place in the squad—considering the tournament is a major build-up event on the road to the T20 World Cup to be held in India and Sri Lanka early next year—the only point of concern was his workload. 'We have had a nice break from the England series. We are trying to look after him. Most fast bowlers are monitored and it won't change. How we require him for future tournaments is also important,' said Agarkar when asked about Bumrah's workload management.

‘Hari Hara Veera Mallu' OTT release: Pawan Kalyan's epic arrives with a new climax — when and where to watch

Hari Hara Veera Mallu: Part 1 – Sword vs. Spirit, one of Pawan Kalyan's most awaited movies, released on July 24, 2025. Mounted on a massive budget with significant investments, the period drama carried high expectations. However, mixed reviews severely impacted its box office performance. While many moviegoers appreciated certain aspects of the film despite its shortcomings, the overall reception was underwhelming. Following its theatrical run, the film has now arrived on OTT. Hari Hara Veera Mallu streaming details Hari Hara Veera Mallu: Part 1 – Sword vs. Spirit, Pawan Kalyan's big-ticket period drama, premiered on Prime Video on August 20, 2025, after a disappointing theatrical outing. The film is available in Telugu, Hindi, Tamil, and Malayalam. According to a Cinema Express report, Prime Video acquired the streaming rights for a staggering Rs 50 crore. The film's official X handle announced, 'A tale of rebellion, rage, and righteousness. The storm that started in theaters now takes over your screens.' Box office vs budget According to reports, the film was made on an extravagant budget of around Rs 300 crore. Despite this, it collected only Rs 116.82 crore worldwide, as per a Sacnilk report. Even after factoring in the OTT rights deal, the film failed to recover its total cost and was widely termed a box office disaster. OTT version features a new climax Pawan Kalyan plays the titular character Hari Hara Veera Mallu, an outlaw on a mission to free the Koh-i-Noor from Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, portrayed by Bobby Deol. While the theatrical version received criticism for its underwhelming visual effects and lack of polish in many sequences, the OTT cut introduces significant changes. In theaters, the film originally ended with Aurangzeb (Bobby Deol) declaring, 'A storm is coming.' This was after producer AM Rathnam trimmed the climactic battle between Veera Mallu and Aurangzeb during a cyclone. The OTT version, however, ends after the song 'Asura Hananam' and features a sequel announcement, removing the storm sequence entirely. This has resulted in the film now having three distinct endings across its edits. Viewers have also noted that the OTT version features improved VFX, making several scenes look more refined than they did on the big screen.
