Elderly couple lose everything as 90th birthday celebrations turn to devastation

Devastated pensioners have lost everything in a fire which broke out at their home. Harold Sharp was due to celebrate his 90th birthday at their bungalow in Prestatyn, on Sunday May 17.
However the day before, his partner Brenda Burrows was using a weed burner, to tidy up outside, when an ember sparked a blaze in the garage, which then spread.
"My mum had visitors down on the Saturday," said daughter Kendra Burrows: "It was Harold's 90th birthday on the Sunday. When they left mum went outside and was burning weeds with a weed burner, trying to get the driveway presentable, because there were more visitors coming down on the Sunday.
"She was burning weeds near the garage and an ember has caught garage without her knowing and with the weather being so dry - its wooden doors on the garage - and it has just gone up. It was destroyed."
Kendra said the fire spread to the utility room, in between the garage and the house, which was also completely burned down, before spreading to a room in the attic. of their home.
However the fire brigade arrived to extinguish the blaze, but the water used to put the flames out, brought all the ceilings down and ruined furniture in the property.
"Luckily the house did not get burned, but with the water damage in the house, everything is ruined," said Kendra, who added the next door neighbour's property had also been affected by the fire.
Harold and Brenda are now staying with Kendra in Rhyl, while they try to sort out the devastation, with the possibility they may be able to move in to temporary accommodation.
The two were not insured and a fundraising campaign has now been launched to raise money for them. The statement on the Gofundme site, which can be accessed here to donate, said: "Hi, my name is Kendra, my mum and dad's house caught fire on Saturday 17/5/25.
"They are 83 and 90 years of age and have lost almost everything through fire and water damage. They are not insured and are absolutely devastated that we have to ask for help but needs must. We would really appreciate any donations so we can get them back into their home as soon as possible."
Kendra said she used to work for a company in Wrexham called Ash Waste, who were donating two skips to help them as they look to clear the debris. Brenda also worked in the building trade for 35 years and the family is asking if there are any builders that know her for help.
She said Harold has dementia and was waking up sometimes confused about where he is and what has happened. Brenda is also devastated and thinks its her fault, "but it was just a freak accident", said Kendra.
A North Wales Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: they were called to the fire in Prestatyn at 5.15pm on Saturday. "The fire caused 100% damage to the garage of the property. Four crews attended," the fire service spokesperson said, adding the casualties were given a precautionary check at the scene

Teenager, 17, is hailed a hero for diving into the sea to save 13-year-old boy who had been 'egged on' by friends to jump 10ft into the water off a pier

A 17-year-old has been hailed a hero after he jumped into the sea to save a 13-year-old boy from drowning in strong currents when he was peer-pressured into jumping off a pier. Brave Marlee Elliott sprinted into the sea to rescue youngster Reggie Jones - who was a stranger to him - when he heard him shouting as he struggled to stay afloat. Reggie had been 'egged on' by his friends to jump 10ft into the water from a pier - despite not having experience swimming in the sea. He jumped from the pier in Southsea, Portsmouth, Hants, into strong waves. Others watched in disbelief as Marlee ran to the shoreline and swam around 200 yards out to Reggie and held him above the water while they waited for emergency services. The lifeboat arrived shortly after and dragged the pair out of the water, before the 13-year-old was taken to hospital in Portsmouth. He had been coughing up water and the paramedics said he was just two minutes away from drowning. He was in hospital for two days due to problems with his kidneys. The older teenager spent two hours in the ambulance after the incident at around 6pm and it was found that his body temperature had dropped to 31 degrees - four degrees below the barrier for hypothermia. A GoFundMe campaign has now been set up by Reggie's stepdad, Jay Ayling, 33, to reward Marlee's selfless act with a brand new motorbike. Reggie, from Portsmouth, said: 'I was with a group of four school mates from Year Nine. We were messing about on the pier and then I jumped off in the sea not knowing that it was a riptide. 'When I was in the water I just gave up and I thought that was it and that was pretty scary. It was probably about 10 feet down and I've never done anything like that before. 'It wasn't cold when I jumped in but it got colder. I don't remember much of what happened until I was pulled out by the lifeboat. 'To be honest there was a lot of shouting but I don't think my friends were doing much to help. None of them jumped in even though I wasn't too far from the pier. 'I am extremely grateful to Marlee for what he did as I wouldn't be here if it weren't for him. I can't say that I'll be jumping into the sea again any time soon.' Marlee added: 'I was at a party on the beach front with a group of around eight friends. We had been there for about two hours. 'I know he jumped off the pier and despite there being lots of people on the beach no one was looking like they were going to save him. 'I wouldn't say I'm a massively confident sea swimmer but I was the best out of our group. It really was a fight or flight moment. 'I was with him for at least five minutes before the lifeboat came and dragged us out. 'I sat in the ambulance for about two hours to warm up before going home. I feel fine now. 'I am not one for boasting but I am proud of what I did. I know that it might not be what you're supposed to do but I think I would do it again in the same situation.' Reggie's step-father Mr Ayling said: 'I think Reggie knows he was being a bit of a douche and won't be doing it again anytime soon. 'His friends were egging him on and so he did it but he just ran out of puff and it was only because of what Marlee did that he is still here. I can't thank him enough. 'I think the incident scared the life out of Reggie. He said in hospital that he didn't want to die. 'I believe that people that do heroic things deserve to be recognised so I set up the fundraiser to help him get his motorbike as he has earned it. 'I also hope it spreads a message and sets a benchmark in the community.'

Child, 6, died after inhaling helium from a large Mylar balloon, medical examiner says

A six-year-old Illinois boy died after inhaling helium from a large, 'child-size' Mylar balloon just days after his birthday, according to officials. Gunnar Hyatt likely suffocated and died after inhaling helium from the balloon last Thursday, May 29, WFIE reported. Hyatt, who had just celebrated his sixth birthday eight days before, was examined by Wabash County Coroner Shaun Keepes at the family's home in Mt. Carmel, a city bordering the state of Indiana. Preliminary autopsy findings indicate that Hyatt's cause of death was consistent with suffocation due to a Mylar-helium filled balloon, Keepes said. Additional testing will be required to determine the boy's official cause of death, he added. Hyatt, born on May 21, 2019, in Evansville, Indiana, was remembered as a 'joyful and fun-spirited little boy whose laughter brightened every room and whose heart was full of adventure,' according to his obituary. The boy, whom his family affectionately referred to as 'Gunny Bunny,' loved being outdoors, playing baseball, fishing, or hunting, and cherished his parents and two older siblings. 'Gunner lived life with a fearless spirit, a playful heart, and a smile that will never be forgotten,' the obituary added. A GoFundMe set up to help the family described Hyatt as 'the craziest, most loving little boy.' It had raised over $19,000 as of Thursday morning. Following his death, the coroner's office hoped to raise public awareness about the potential dangers of large Mylar balloons that had been forgotten. 'While often seen as harmless decorations, these balloons can pose serious risks – particularly to young children – including the rare but devastating possibility of suffocation and/or helium toxicity,' Keepes said. The Mount Carmel Police Department and the Illinois State Police Child Death Task Force are also investigating the incident.
