Club World Cup is the worst idea ever implemented in football

Glasgow Times2 days ago

The new-look 32-team tournament started earlier this month, with the final taking place at the MetLife Stadium in New York on July 13.
The Premier League resumes a month later, with Liverpool kicking off their title defence in the opening game of the season against Bournemouth on August 15.
16 teams remain.

Klopp has previously spoken about issues such as fixture congestion and in an interview with German newspaper Welt am Sonntag, he suggested the Club World Cup will not provide any 'real recovery' for those players involved.
'It's all about the game and not the surrounding events – and that's why the Club World Cup is the worst idea ever implemented in football in this regard,' Klopp said.
'People who have never had or do not have anything to do with day-to-day business any more are coming up with something.
'There is insane money for participating, but it's also not for every club.
'Last year it was the Copa (America) and the European Championship, this year it's the Club World Cup, and next year the World Cup. That means no real recovery for the players involved, neither physically nor mentally.'
Klopp has expressed his concern about the Club World Cup (Martin Rickett/PA)
After leaving his role as Reds boss last summer, Klopp became Red Bull's head of global soccer at the start of 2025.
He added: 'I have serious fears that players will suffer injuries they've never had before next season. If not next season, then it will happen at the World Cup or afterwards.
'We constantly expect the players to go into every game as if it were their last. We tell them that 70 or 75 times a year. But it can't go on like this.
'We have to make sure they have breaks, because if they don't get them, they won't be able to deliver top performances – and if they can't achieve that any more, the entire product loses value.'

Jonny Evans announces retirement and takes up new Manchester United role

The 37-year-old, who won the Champions League, three Premier League titles, the FA Cup and two League Cups during his two stints at Old Trafford, has been appointed head of loans and pathways. Evans' role will see him work closely with director of football Jason Wilcox and the director of academy to ease developing talent into the first team. 🔴 Jonny Evans has been appointed as our Head of Loans and Pathways, confirming the end of his illustrious playing career 🤝 — Manchester United (@ManUtd) June 30, 2025 He told the club's official website: 'I want to officially announce my retirement from my playing career, not with sadness, but with pride, gratitude and excitement for the next chapter ahead. 'I'll be forever indebted to the managers, coaches, staff and, of course, my team-mates, that I have had the privilege of working alongside throughout my 20 years in professional football. 'My biggest and most heartfelt thanks must go to the fans who have supported me during every step of the journey. It's been an honour to be on the pitch and feel your passion home and away; I will be eternally grateful for every ounce of support. 'I am looking forward to working with the next generation of talented players to support them to reach their potential. Having had experience of loans myself, I know the crucial role that they can play within a player's development. 'I am excited to help further develop the pathway to our first team and continue the legacy of young players thriving at Manchester United.' Evans, who won 107 caps for Northern Ireland and was awarded an MBE for his services to football in 2023, emerged from United's academy to make 241 senior appearances for the club. He also had stints at West Brom and Leicester, with whom he tasted FA Cup success for the second time in 2021, and significantly had two loan spells at Sunderland under former Red Devils skipper Roy Keane early in a career which amounted to 536 games. His playing days effectively came to an end as last season drew to a close and, while he is close to completing his UEFA A licence, he insisted earlier this summer that he was in no rush to make a decision over his future. However now his contract at Old Trafford has formally expired, he is ready to launch the latest phase of his illustrious career. Welcoming Evans' appointment, Wilcox said: 'Having just finished his exceptional playing career, Jonny is the perfect role model for our young players. 'Jonny's knowledge of what it takes to succeed at Manchester United will be of great benefit to each of them as we continue to develop world-class talent capable of performing in our first team.'

Christian Norgaard ‘more likely than not' to leave Brentford this summer

Skipper Norgaard is expected to depart the Bees this summer, with Arsenal reportedly agreeing a deal to sign the 31-year-old Denmark midfielder. In addition to potentially losing Norgaard, goalkeeper Mark Flekken has signed for Bayer Leverkusen and leading scorer Bryan Mbeumo has been the subject of several bids from Manchester United. The Bees still have two months until the September 1 deadline to get deals over the line but will need to look further afield than keeper Caoimhin Kelleher and Michael Kayode, who has made his loan from Fiorentina permanent. 'I think it's more likely than not,' Giles said of Norgaard's possible departure at the unveiling of Andrews as Brentford boss. 'If he ends up leaving then he goes to a club who have more opportunities than we do and he's earned it because he's been an unbelievable player for us. 'Nothing's done as it stands but it's a strong possibility.' Andrews added: 'Christian has been a really big player for this football club. 'I saw it last year from a set-piece capacity. He's a top human being and it will be hard to emulate, but it gives opportunities to others.' Andrews, who was a set-piece coach at Brentford, has taken over from Thomas Frank in what will be his first managerial role. Frank ended his seven-year stint in west London to take charge of Tottenham following the sacking of Ange Postecoglou. Despite being dealt a tricky start to the next Premier League season, with Brentford set to play Nottingham Forest, Aston Villa, Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United within their first seven games, Andrews stressed that his lack of experience will not guarantee extra patience from the club hierarchy. Andrews said: '(I've been given) no assurances, I think the reality is that it's a football club that has been built in a certain way and we have ways to do things which aren't the norm. 'The support Thomas had throughout his tenure was impeccable, the relations he built were very connected and aligned and I don't see that being any different.' Mbeumo is also likely to leave the club this summer, with the 20-goal forward drawing repeated approaches from Manchester United. 'He had a fantastic season,' Giles told the BBC. 'We expected big interest in him, we have had big interest in him. 'He has his ideas about where he wants to take his career. He is well within his rights to do that. 'It is not impossible he is still a Brentford player next season if we agree he is going to stay.'
