Wallsend attempted murderer hurled racist abuse at victim
A man who attempted to murder a man with weapons including cans of beer has been jailed for 15 years.Kevin Wood, 38, hurled racist abuse at his victim as he struck him some 50 times with punches, kicks and cans, Northumbria Police said.Wood fled when someone else intervened, the force said, with the victim suffering extensive facial injuries, including a detached lip.Wood, of York Drive in Wallsend, admitted attempted murder, and will have to serve a further five years on extended licence upon his eventual release from prison, a Newcastle Crown Court judge ruled.
'Shocking display of violence'
Wood carried out the "vicious" attack in the early hours of 22 August and was arrested a short while afterwards having hidden behind a wall, a police spokeswoman said.Following Wood's sentencing, Det Insp Michelle Moir, of Northumbria Police, said it had been a "lengthy and complex investigation", describing Wood as a "dangerous offender"."The attack Wood carried out was a shocking display of violence, and I'm pleased that we were able to swiftly locate him before getting him into custody and later charged," she said.She also said officers were "grateful" for the intervention of a nearby resident who "did their best to stop Wood from attacking the victim".A restraining order banning Wood from contacting his victim was also made.

"As part of our enquiries, officers have identified a gold suitcase, which they believe could be in the Portsmouth area. Young man, 19, is killed after machete knife fight spiralled into brawl on the street - as man is arrested for murder
A murder investigation has been launched following the death of a man in Bradford after a number of males 'fought on the street with bladed weapons'. Police are appealing for any witnesses to the 'disorder' which took place this afternoon in the Newton Street area. Officers were called at 2.31pm to a report of the brawl and emergency services found a 19-year-old male who suffered serious injuries. He was provided with medical care but died at the scene. Cordons remain in place and four arrests have been made in connection with the event so far. One male was arrested on suspicion of murder and three men were arrested on suspicion of offences including affray. DCI Dan Bates, of the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, who is leading the investigation, said: 'A full investigation is ongoing into what has clearly been a very serious incident which has resulted in a young man losing his life. 'A number of initial arrests have been made and we are appealing for witnesses and information, as we work to determine the full circumstances of what took place. 'We will have a number of police scenes in place over the course of the evening and uniformed officers will also be patrolling to reassure residents. Forensics are currently on site following the death of a 19-year-old who was pronounced deceased at the scene 'Colleagues from Bradford District's Stronger Communities Team are also working to liaise with partners in communities.'
