François Ozon's brush with a mysterious mushroom lunch inspired his new film
He has more reason than most, given Ozon's great aunt once accidentally poisoned his family during an unfortunate lunch during which she served up the very wrong fungi. Funnily enough, she didn't eat them either, but thankfully no-one died.
Ozon wasn't present at the fateful meal, but the startling incident and the prospect that his great aunt was intentional with her menu stuck with him. This shocking feast is the spore that has sprouted into his surprisingly wholesome did-she-do-it film, When Fall is Coming.
"I think, perhaps, you might be as perverse as me," Ozon chuckles as we discuss the similarities between his latest film and the Patterson case.
A deeply emotional story that refuses to take the obvious path, When Fall is Coming stars César-nominated actor Hélène Vincent as Michelle.
Living alone in the bucolic surrounds of a blissful Burgundy village that appears permanently autumnal, Michelle loves pottering in her veggie garden and foraging for mushrooms with best friend Marie-Claude (Josiane Balasko).
A kind soul, Michelle also takes Marie-Claude's wayward son, Vincent (Pierre Lottin), under her wing after he is released from prison. But encroaching dementia may be clouding her days.
Michelle's vagueness could possibly account for the ill-fated mushroom dish with which she (accidentally?) poisons her irritable daughter, Valérie (Ludivine Sagnier), who is visiting from Paris with Michelle's adored grandson, Lucas (Garlan Erlos).
After the incident, Valérie forbids her mum from seeing Lucas, sparking a depressive spiral in Michelle that sets in motion yet more (possibly) murderous intrigue.
Ozon wanted Michelle to feel real. "In cinema, we are so used to seeing young people all the time, but when you follow the life of an older woman, for me, it's fascinating," he says.
"She's close to nature and happy with the rhythm of her life, until it's no longer possible to see her grandson."
Casting Vincent was integral. "She is 80 years old and beautiful," Ozon says.
"Her face is like a landscape on which you can see her expressions. It was very political, for me, to have an actress who has no plastic surgery, with so much societal pressure for women to stay young all the time."
When Fall is Coming takes unexpected paths, weaving doubt around Michelle's actions.
"I love ambiguity and contrast, when things are not black or white," Ozon says.
"When the facts give you the opportunity to ask yourself a question, 'What would I do in this situation?' And in the case of this film, I love the idea that we don't have all the keys to the story. It's a puzzle."
Just like life, Ozon suggests.
"You are not a god," he says.
"You don't see everything. And for Michelle, you know, there are things she wants to see, yes, and there are things she prefers to hide."
The film opens with a telling scene in which a church-attending Michelle listens to a sermon about Mary Magdalene, whose story has become increasingly complicated, with evidence that the church manipulated her depiction as a sex worker.
"I love the character of Mary Magdalene in the Bible" Ozon says. "She gives so much love, and she's forgiven. I think this idea is beautiful, and it goes against the puritanism you can find in many Catholic movements."
Ozon was raised in the church. "What's always surprised me about the ideology of guilt and forgiveness is that, as a child, you realise you can make a lot of sins," he laughs again.
"If you say, 'Forgive me,' then you will go to heaven. So I said to myself, as a child, 'So I can kill people?' Maybe Michelle is as naive as I was?"
Ozon adores the idea that how we interpret Michelle's actions says more about ourselves than it does about him.
Like When Fall is Coming, Ozon's previous films are full of incredible women. Both Vincent and Balasko (and Lottin) appear in By the Grace of God, (2018), his excoriation of child abuse within the Catholic church.
Sagnier made waves alongside Charlotte Rampling in his dangerously seductive Swimming Pool (2003), popped up in musical murder mystery 8 Women (2002) with Catherine Deneuve and Isabelle Huppert, and appears in Ozon's polyamorous romp Water Drops on Burning Rocks (2000).
A trusted ensemble is vital to Ozon's craft. "You have to understand your actors and to love them," he says.
"That doesn't mean you have sex with them, but this close relationship helps them give the emotions we need for the film."
This emotional truth aided the cast in approaching the knotty ramblings of When Fall Is Coming.
"For me, it's a film about the unconscious," Ozon says. "Sometimes there are things you want in your dreams, and it happens. Life helps you to have what you desire."
What Ozon desires most, right now, is for Patterson to see When Fall is Coming, he says with a mischievous glimmer in his eyes.
"Perhaps she could review it for a newspaper?"
When Fall is Coming is in Australian cinemas now.

The music for the hit indie game Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is set to be one of the year's biggest scores
Lorien Testard has made just one video game soundtrack, his first and only commercially released work for Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. It's being touted as one of the best this year. So how did Testard achieve this impressive feat, which has been nominated for the World Soundtrack Award longlist and praised by French president Emmanuel Macron? By posting his SoundCloud online for anyone and everyone to listen, until exactly the right person found it. 'I would train myself by composing one song every week and post it on my SoundCloud. I did this for a year.' The world of Clair Obscur is a twisted and destroyed version of our own. Paris is transformed into a city called Lumière, shattered by a gigantic woman called The Paintress who scrawls a massive number on The Monolith causing everyone of that age to disappear in a phenomenon called The Gommage. Players take on the journey to defeat this towering enemy on the expedition named after the age of those who will face their doom at the end of the year, the titular Expedition 33. The devastating and beautiful vision of this world mirrors how Testard views his music complementing the layered artful experience involved in a video game like Clair Obscur. It's more than scores and notes, it's the heartbeat that dictates the rhythm of Clair Obscur's digital world. 'I see the world of Clair Obscur like a giant painting, and I write each song to create my own little drawing musically, one for each scene and each character, to tie the world together.' A project like this doesn't usually come about through solitary work and a slew of wonderful talent were brought in to help bring this dream soundtrack to life. This includes impressive musicians like vocalist Alice Duport-Persier, Daniel Sika who helped orchestrate Testard's music and l'Orchestre Curieux whose members brought these melodies to life. But how Testard found some of these people is a wonderful modern-era tale of how the internet can be a tool to bring creators together. 'It was really important for us to have a French singer to sing the lyrics I wrote, so I searched on YouTube for singers that I really love and [Alice Duport-Persier] was by far the number one on my list.' 'I feel really connected and tied to her voice. She gave me a lot of feeling and a lot of emotion when she sang.' Duport-Persier joined Testard as co-composer on the soundtrack. 'I showed her Lost Voice in the first email, the song of The Gommage, and she said yes pretty early and the very next week she was in my house to record with me.' In the role-playing genre of video games, just like dramatic films, the action culminates in a final epic confrontation with musical pieces like One Winged Angel from Final Fantasy VII taking on a life of their own outside the games. These monoliths of music are the climax of a player's journey, where hours of time and effort exploring and learning the video game world are tested, and ultimately rewarded. Testard's love of video game music means he's familiar with this feeling and was keen to chase it in his own work, seeing it as his own final boss battle creatively. 'This was my first game and it's my first final boss theme for a game so I want to remember it for the rest of my life." The boss battle piece for Clair Obscur, Nos vies en Lumière, is a 33 minute journey divided into three 11 minute pieces, combining elements of every piece that comes before it to give a clear message to the player. For Testard, this wasn't just a job. It was an opportunity to finally get to work on composing something he had dreamed of creating for a very long time. 'It was like joy and luck, I feel really grateful to have the opportunity to create the soundtrack of my dreams. I see that as a gift for me." "I don't need to top that and I don't want to top that. For the future I will create what I love and what I want to create and it will be different." 'Maybe next time they'll let me do a 43 minute long piece for expedition 43.'

Flight forced to make emergency landing after bird strike destroys nose of plane
Startling footage captured the moment smoke flooded a Paris-bound flight after a violent bird strike, leaving panicked passengers covering their faces with oxygen masks until they reached safety. Iberia flight IB-579 had just taken off from Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barjas Airport in Madrid Sunday when a large bird obliterated the plane's nose, forcing it to turn around and make an emergency landing, ABC 7 Chicago reported. 'We thought it was the turbulence that the captain was talking about, but then we started hearing a noise,' passenger Giancarlo Sandoval, who recorded the frightening scene and shared it on social media, told the outlet. 'We were like, OK, something's going on.' The spinechilling video shows Sandoval pressing an oxygen mask to his face as the plane rumbled with a disturbing noise and smoke billowed through the aircraft. A baby can be heard hysterically crying in the background, as scared passengers sit frozen in silence before eventually clapping with relief when the plane landed safely back in Spain's capital. The flight, headed to Paris Orly Airport in France, had reportedly only been in the air for 20 minutes. Photos shared on social media also showed the jet's nose smashed in — with a gaping hole — and what appeared to be blood splattered on the side of the plane. 'The entire flight crew, including pilots and cabin crew, acted with the utmost professionalism in managing the situation and attending to the passengers,' the Spanish airline told the outlet.

Melanie C's Spanish island getaway with Aussie boyfriend continues
Another week, another set of photos showing Spice Girl Melanie C looking loved-up in Europe with her Aussie boyfriend Chris Dingwall. Days after sharing photos of their romantic getaway on the Spanish island of Mallorca, the pair have been spotted on a boat in Ibiza, Sporty Spice looking fit as ever at 51. In one photo, the pop star, clad in a black string bikini, planted a kiss on her Aussie model boyfriend. Dingwall is originally from Sydney but has travelled the world as a model signed to Ford Models and Chadwick. Mel C's not the only Spice Girl to be publicly loved-up lately – Scary Spice Mel B just celebrated her second wedding to hairstylist Rory McPhee in Morocco. Meanwhile, soon-to-be The Voice Australia coach Mel C and her Aussie beau went public at Wimbledon in London last July, days after they were spotted walking hand-in-hand at the iconic Glastonbury festival. But they had been quietly dating for months before that: Melanie's frequent visits to our shores earlier in 2024, ostensibly for DJ gigs, also doubled as quality time with Dingwall as the pair shared romantic getaways in resorts across Brisbane, Byron Bay and the Whitsundays. Since those early days the pair have become more open about their relationship, with Melanie C even professing her 'love' for Dingwall on social media in January after he wished her a happy 51st birthday. Melanie C is undoubtedly the most private of the five Spice Girls when it comes to her love life, largely keeping her relationships out of the public eye since a string of romances with high-profile musicians in the late 90s and early noughties. She has a teenage daughter from a longtime relationship with ex-partner Thomas Starr. The pair split in 2012 after a decade together.
