Speedy Tigresses bitten by Liaoning again
KUALA LUMPUR: The national women's hockey team have lost again to Liaoning province in their playing tour of China, this time 3-1 at the Gongshu Stadium, today.
On May 7, world No. 23 Malaysia drew 1-1 with Liaoning before losing 1-0 to the same team, made of second-string players, the following day.
Malaysia took the lead through Dayang Nuramirah Abang Mahadini off a penalty corner in the fourth match.
But Liaoning, preparing for the China National Games later this year, hit back with three field goals in the third and fourth quarters.
The Speedy Tigresses, who are preparing for the Nations Cup 2 in Poland next month, will play three more friendlies with Liaoning, on May 13, 15 and 17.

The 19th ranked Taiwanese twins had shocked the top seeds by taking the first game, before the Malaysians made a comeback to win 17-21, 21-17, 21-14 at the Istora Stadium in Jakarta tonight. Sze Fei-Izzuddin had to labour for an hour before they sealed the match and booked their berth in the last 16. The Malaysians have faced setback after setback this year, failing to get past the quarter-final stage in various tournaments, including two first-round exits. The duo won three World Tour titles in 2023 and another three in 2024, but have not won a single one this year. Today's tie was Sze Fei-Izzuddin's seventh time facing the Taiwanese pair, with the Malaysians winning six of the encounters. In the last 16, Sze Fei-Izzuddin will take on their world No 22 compatriots Nur Azriyn Ayub-Tan Wee Kiong, who staged an upset by beating the No 14 ranked Chinese duo of Xie Hao Nan-Zeng Wei Han 21-17, 21-12. Fellow men's doubles pair Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun also progressed to the last 16 after making light work of American duo Chen Zhi Yi-Presley Smith, winning 21-6, 21-11 in just 21 minutes. The Malaysians will meet compatriots Junaidi Arif-Yap Roy King, who received a walkover from French pair Eloi Adam-Leo Rossi.

(Bernama pic) KUALA LUMPUR : The race for the post of Malaysian Athletics Federation president is expected to be a hotly contested battle between the current and former presidents, with two others also joining the fray. Incumbent Shahidan Kassim is expected to face a four-cornered fight in the June 15 election for the 2025-2029 term. Past president and Perak Amateur Athletics Association president Karim Ibrahim is contesting for the post again, as well as incumbent Malaysian Athletics Federation deputy president Mark William Ling and Terengganu Amateur Athletics Association president Wan Hisham Wan Salleh. Karim and Wan Hisham are also in the running for the post of Malaysian Athletics Federation deputy president, while R Annamalai, Sallehuddin Safar and Mohamat Hasan have also thrown their hats into the ring. An intense battle is on the cards for the four posts of vice-president, which includes one reserved for a woman representative, with nine candidates in contention. Those aspiring for posts in the Malaysian Athletics Federation can be nominated and registered as a candidate for more than one post. However, on the day of the election, they must choose only one post to vie for. The Malaysian Athletics Federation has 13 affiliates, comprising delegations from 13 associations. Each association will be represented by three delegates during polling.

Speedy Tigers toughen up to push for honours at Nations Cup
Selangor men's hockey team in semifinals of MHC Hockey 5s.-KAMARUL ARIFFIN/ TheStar PETALING JAYA: The Speedy Tigers are setting a clear goal ahead of the FIH Nations Cup, which will be held from June 15-21 in Kuala Lumpur. They want to reach the semi-finals and then go all out. Having finished fourth in South Africa in 2022 and seventh in Gniezmo, Poland, last year, coach Sarjit Singh believes this time, with a stronger, more battle-hardened squad, the team are ready to make a serious push for honours. "We are going with 20 players, and we've built well this past year with 17 matches in 2024 and 11 already this year," said Sarjit. "The team are improving, especially after the tours in Australia and South Korea. It's fair to say we must qualify for the semi-finals. That's the minimum." The coach is counting on his forwards - Azrai Aizad Abu Kamal, Shello Silverius, Norsyafiq Sumantri, Muhajir Abdu Rauf and Akhimullah Anuar Esook - to convert more chances, especially from field goals, and has identified the need for additional penalty corner flickers to improve scoring efficiency. "Our forwards are creating chances, but we need to take more when it comes to penalty corners - 50 percent conversion would help us a lot. Syed (Syed Mohd Syafiq Syed Cholan) is one of our top penalty corner takers. If he performs, I hope he can break into the top four," he said. "We have scored 16 goals, 11 from field and five from penalty corners. We have to do better when it comes to defending penalty corners. In South Korea, we conceded 25 penalty corners, letting in five. We've to stop that." Malaysia's first game in the Nations Cup will be against Pakistan at the National Hockey Stadium on June 15, and Sarjit knows Malaysia have not had the best of results against them in recent years. "We drew 4-4 in the last Nations Cup and lost 4-5 to them in the Azlan Shah Cup. They have quality players like Abdul Rana, Hannan Shahid, and penalty corner flicker Sufyan Khan. They have come back stronger. We have to check these players closely." Sarjit also highlighted that teams like New Zealand, France, and South Africa bring Pro League-level intensity to the competition. "These are quality sides, and the matches will be tough. But with coaches like Sohail (Abbas) helping our keepers and us studying the opponent flickers via video, we're preparing well."
