Punjab's Sujapur village erupted in a celebration when Liberal candidate Sukh Dhaliwal was elected an MP for the sixth time in the Federal polls in Canada on Tuesday. Dhaliwal is among more than 20 Punjab-origin candidates who were elected to the House of Commons in Canada on Tuesday.This time, around 65 Punjab-origin candidates contested Canada's Federal polls, won by the Liberal Party.In 2021, 18 Punjabis had won the polls, while in 2019, 20 Punjab-origin were elected to the House of Commons.The Punjabi community forms a significant part of Canada's South Asian population and influences many seats.Dhaliwal, 64, won the Surrey Newton seat, defeating Conservative nominee Harjit Singh Gill, his closest rival in the fray.A businessman, Dhaliwal was elected an MP from Surrey Newton in 2011, 2015, 2019 and 2021. He earlier served as an MP from Newton-North Delta.With roots in Sujapur village in Jagraon in Punjab's Ludhiana district, Dhaliwal on Tuesday became the cause of an unseasonal merry back home with many villagers breaking out in a dance to the beats of 'dhol' and others distributing sweets.His elder brother said Dhaliwal remained connected with his roots and loves his village.Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee general secretary Gurcharan Singh Grewal, who studied with Dhaliwal, said it was a moment of happiness for everyone.He comes to his villages and meets locals, said Grewal, adding, he knows many of them by name.Conservative candidates Amanpreet Singh Gill and Sukhman Gill won from Calgary Skyview and Abbotsford, South Langley.Both hailed from the Moga district. Their victories also led to celebrations in their native places.Punjab Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan and AAP Moga MLA Amandeep Kaur Arora congratulated both of them for their victories.Sandhwan expressed hope that they would further strengthen ties between India and Canada.Prominent among those who won in the Canada polls were the Liberal Party's Anita Anand from Oakville East, Bardish Chagger from Waterloo, Anju Dhillon from Dorval-Lachine, Randeep Sarai from Surrey Centre, while the Conservative party's Dalwinder Gill from Calgary McKnight, Arpan Khanna from Oxford, and Tim Uppal from Edmonton Gateway.Meanwhile, SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami extended his greetings to the Punjabis who won the election.In a statement, Dhami termed the victories a matter of "great pride" for the Sikh community and all Punjabis.Hard work, honesty, and humanitarian service of Punjabis won them the election, he said.The SGPC chief expressed hope that the elected Sikh and Punjabi Members of Parliament will uphold their religious values.Dhami also congratulated the Liberal Party and its leader, Mark Carney, on their coming to power.

The Punjab BJP on Sunday organised a 'Kisan Mazdoor Fateh Rally' in Rajpura town to celebrate the revocation of the Aam Aadmi Party government's anti-farmer land pooling policy. Thousands of farmers and party workers joined the rally, showcasing BJP's growing strength in rural Punjab and its unwavering resolve to safeguard the rights of the farming community. He said it was astonishing that outsiders were running the Punjab government. 'Neither the Chief Minister nor his Cabinet was involved, yet Punjabis are paying the price.' He added that Kejriwal was working as proxy CM of Punjab whereas it was Bhagwant Mann for whom Punjabis had voted. 'I thank all farmers and BJP workers, it is because of your tireless efforts and pressure that this useless and anti-farmer policy has finally been revoked,' he said. Punjab working President Ashwani Sharma said BJP's consistent fight at the block and tehsil levels forced the government to withdraw its anti-farmer agenda. He added, 'AAP's expiry date has arrived. The people of Punjab demand Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government for real change. Even promises like MSP on 24 crops by AAP remain unfulfilled. Punjab should look at its cousin Haryana -- ruled by BJP -- that offers MSP to farmers on all vegetables and fruits. Today, roadway workers, teachers, doctors, etc., all are on roads, protesting.' BJP national General Secretary Tarun Chugh described the policy reversal as a 'victory of Punjabiyat". He slammed AAP for turning Punjab into an 'ATM' to fund its Delhi politics. 'Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has reduced himself to a puppet CM, dancing to the tunes of leaders like Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain, both of whom have already faced jail terms,' he said. Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu hailed the cancellation of the land pooling policy as a historic win for Punjab's farmers. 'This is not just a political success but a fight for our land, and it is a victory for every farmer. Only the BJP can free Punjab from mounting debt and bring true relief through pro-people welfare schemes and development-driven governance,' he added. Former Union Minister Preneet Kaur thanked farmers and BJP workers for their support, saying, 'The strength seen here today shows the power of BJP's family in Punjab. We have always stood with our people, and this rally is proof that the BJP is on the path to victory in the 2027 Assembly elections. This is truly a win for our farmers and Punjab.' The 'Kisan Mazdoor Fateh Rally' sent out a clear message that farmers will not allow their land and rights to be compromised under AAP.

Kejriwal acting as proxy CM in Punjab: BJP
1 2 Patiala: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Punjab organised a large-scale 'Kisan Mazdoor Fateh Rally' in Rajpura of Patiala district on Sunday to celebrate the revocation of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) govt's anti-farmer land-pooling policy. A substantial number of farmers and party workers participated in the rally. Earlier, in 2012, he had contested as an independent candidate. Satbir's father RS Khatra had headed SIT which cracked Bargari sacrilege and related cases in 2018. R S Khatra also cracked Maur blast case of 2017 but there was little progress in the case. Ashwini Sharma gave robe of honor to welcome Satbir in the party. Earlier, Jakhar suggested CM Mann that if he again wanted to get chance to become CM, the only way is to conduct the vigilance raids at AAP Delhi leaders current residences in Chandigarh where the corruption and illegal money was being sent. Before him Tarun Chug had claimed that 'Tihar jail returned' AAP leaders were now busy in collecting illegal money while sitting at Chandigarh. Warring ridicules BJP for celebrating land-pooling policy rollback
1 2 Chandigarh: Punjab Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring on Sunday ridiculed the Bharatiya Janata Party ( BJP ) for 'celebrating' the withdrawal of the land-pooling policy by the Aam Aadmi Party govt in Punjab. "Begaani shadi mein Abdullah deewana," he remarked in a written statement. Reacting to the BJP's rally on Sunday, Warring said the saffron party was "trying to steal the credit of the farmers and the Congress party, both of whom put up a strong resistance against these laws with massive protests against the policy." He added, "It is the farmers and the Congress workers who deserve the credit for forcing the govt to retreat and withdraw the policy, and now the BJP is trying to steal the credit." He asked the BJP leadership, "What was its contribution in making the govt withdraw the policy?" Warring said that the BJP was "playing a fixed match with the AAP" as the latter was "trying to help it in making inroads in Punjab." "But," Warring added, "the wounds that the BJP inflicted on the Punjabi farmers during the anti-farm law protests are too fresh to be forgotten.
