State-owned Union Bank of India on Tuesday said it is examining lapses in the procurement of about 2 lakh books of former IMF Executive Director K V Subramanian valued at about Rs 7.25 crore. It is to be noted the government had terminated the services of Subramanian who was representing India, Bangladesh Sri Lanka and Nepal as ED at the International Monetary Fund with effect from April 30, 2025, six months ahead of his three-year tenure. Union Bank of India in a regulatory filing said that it has started examining the lapses in the bulk procurement of the book titled 'India@100: Envisioning Tomorrow's Economic Powerhouse'."The bank has made the said procurement. However, there were certain lapses in the procurement, which are being examined by the bank," Union Bank India said in a regulatory filing.Meanwhile, Congress on Tuesday claimed the government suddenly terminated Subramanian's position due to "impropriety", and raised questions of "wastage of public money" over the Union Bank of India allegedly placing an order for two lakh copies of his book.The opposition party also alleged the cost of this "blatant propaganda" was borne by the public exchequer and being done because Subramanian justified every economic blunder and flawed policy of the government.Citing internal documents of the public sector Union Bank of India, Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate claimed these books were meant to be distributed through zonal and regional offices of the Union Bank of India to its deposits to schools, colleges and libraries.Each of the bank's 18 zonal offices were meant to receive 10,525 copies, she alleged."But it now seems that hard evidence has left the government embarrassed and forced his premature removal from the post of India's executive director at the IMF, six months before the completion of his three-year term," she claimed.According to sources, concerns were raised over an "alleged impropriety" relating to the promotion and publicity of Subramanian's latest book.It is also alleged that Subramanian used his official position to pressurise some institutions to purchase his book.Subramanian was appointed as the executive director (India) at the IMF with effect from November 1, 2022 for a period of three years. Prior to this, he served as the chief economic adviser to the government.The executive board of the IMF is composed of 25 directors (executive directors or EDs) elected by the member countries or groups of countries.

The Congress's rivals lashed out on Saturday against the opposition leader Rahul Gandhi for alleging systematic rigging of the November 2024 Maharashtra elections, a claim also rebuffed by Election Commission officials who called it misinformation. The Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha published an op-ed on Saturday, claiming the Maharashtra polls were a 'blueprint for rigging democracy' and alleging 'industrial-scale rigging involving the capture of our national institutions'. Maharashtra deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde dismissed Gandhi's claims as baseless, pointing out the inconsistency in the Congress leader's position. Gandhi outlined what he termed a five-step rigging process: rigging the panel for appointing the EC, adding fake voters to electoral rolls, inflating voter turnout, targeting bogus voting where the BJP needed wins, and hiding evidence. Election Commission officials, who did not want to be named, reiterated their stance of following laid-down procedures as per law, dismissing allegations of voter percentage spikes and substantial jumps in elector numbers. One of these officials emphasised that electoral roll preparation for the assembly elections occurred under the oversight of over 100,000 booth level agents appointed by political parties, including 27,099 from the Congress itself. 'Instead of writing to the EC directly, it is very strange that Rahul Gandhi keeps approaching the media seeking answers to his doubts again and again,' said this top-level official. 'After losing the match, blaming the referee has become the standard practice.' EC did not respond to requests for a comment. The official cited above added: 'If there was an issue with the elector numbers, why were hardly any appeals preferred with the DM and the CEO under the Representation of the People Act, 1950?'. The person cited above provided comparative data to counter Gandhi's allegations, noting that Maharashtra's 8.14 per cent elector growth between 2019 and 2024 was actually lower than other states. On allegations of inflated turnout figures, the EC official explained that voter turnout data on the VTR App would logically increase after 5 PM due to logistical challenges. 'Polling teams come from varying distances and face different logistical challenges, such as late-hour voting trends, difficult geographical and weather conditions, communication issues, and tough terrain,' this person said Following the off-record responses by EC officials, Gandhi took to X at 6:56 PM on Saturday and wrote on the issue again: 'Dear EC, You are a Constitutional body. Releasing unsigned, evasive notes to intermediaries is not the way to respond to serious questions,' Gandhi posted, demanding the publication of consolidated, digital voter rolls and release of post-5 PM CCTV footage from Maharashtra polling booths. BJP pushed Himachal into financial crisis during its tenure: Sukhu
Chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu once again lashed out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) while blaming the saffron party's predecessor government for pushing the state in financial crisis. Sukhu was addressing a public meeting at Daulatpur Chowk in Una district on Saturday. Taking jibe at the BJP, Sukhu said, 'During five years of its regime, the BJP kept on boasting about the 'double engine sarkar', but could not significantly contribute to the development of the state and raised loans from the Centre, thus pushing the state in financial crisis'. He said that to make Himachal Pradesh self-reliant, the Congress government was determined to take some harsh decisions to improve the economy with co-operation of the people of the state. CM on Saturday inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of development projects worth Rs. 75.10 crore in Gagret in Una district. The Chief Minister announced additional funds for the remaining work on the Daulatpur-Bhadrakali road, for which ₹15 crore has already been spent. He also declared that the necessary funds will be released to complete the remaining construction work of the new building of Gagret Hospital. The Chief Minister informed the public that the survey work for the Hoshiarpur-Nadaun four-lane road project has been completed and the construction work will commence shortly. He further assured that the Shivbari Fair will be granted district-level status. In addition, the vacant posts of doctors at Daulatpur Chowk and Gagret Primary Health Centres will be filled soon to improve healthcare services in the region. Criticizing the previous government's education policies, the Chief Minister said that Himachal Pradesh, once ranked among the top states in quality education, has dropped down to 21st position due to 'flawed policies' of the previous BJP government. 'The present government has decided to merge such schools to ensure qualitative education and a better future for students,' said the chief minister. He added that Una district has become the first solar-powered district in the state. Solar power projects of 32 MW in Pekhubela, 5 MW in Bhanjal, and 10 MW in Aghlaur have been completed in record time. Additionally, projects with a combined capacity of 163 MW are under construction, involving an investment of ₹500 crore. 'In the future, Una will not only meet its electricity demands but also supply power to other districts. Moreover, an ultra-modern Bulk Drug Park is coming up in Haroli, which will create job opportunities and significantly strengthen Una's industrial presence,' added Sukhu. Deputy CM Mukesh Agnihotri, in his address, said that ₹170 crore has been invested solely in water supply schemes in the Gagret Assembly Constituency. 'This will offer a permanent solution to drinking water and irrigation problems,' said Agnihotri.

Rajasthan: Bank employee withdraws Rs 4.58 crore from customers' in Kota, arrested
ANI 08 Jun 2025, 02:27 GMT+10 Kota (Rajasthan) [India], June 8 (ANI): A woman employee of ICICI Bank in Kota allegedly withdrew Rs 4.58 crore from customers' accounts and invested it in the share market, police said on late Saturday, adding that she has been arrested. Sub-inspector (SI) Udyog Nagar Police Station Mohammad Ibrahim told reporters, 'Bank officer Sakshi Gupta took Rs 4.58 crore from 43 customers' accounts. A case has been registered, and she has been arrested'. 'Sakshi Gupta had invested this money in the share market through a demat account,' the officer added. More details are awaited. (ANI)
