Marco van Basten insists Barcelona must change Lamine Yamal's position

Metro07-05-2025

Dutch legend Marco van Basten has urged Barcelona to change Lamine Yamal's position following their Champions League exit against Inter Milan.
The 17-year-old sensation provided another dazzling display at San Siro on Tuesday night in an unforgettable semi-final decider between the two European giants.
Yamal was a constant danger with his dribbling bewildering Inter's defence despite doubling up on the youngster.
His 14 successful dribbles was the most recorded by a player in a single Champions League match since Neymar eight years ago.
He was equally impressive in last week's first leg, scoring his side's sensational opener.
With his stock soaring again over the last week having also starred for Spain at last summer's European Championships, Yamal is already perhaps the best winger in the game with many already regarding him as the next Ballon d'Or winner.
Van Basten, who won football's most prestigious individual three times during his legendary career, was among those blown away by Yamal's performances across two legs against Inter.
But the former striker believes Barcelona and head coach Hansi Flick should already be considering moving the teenager into a more central role where he can take 'the next step'.
'It's actually a shame that he plays there, because he doesn't get the ball enough,' van Basten told Ziggo Sport.
'Of course he is a constant threat on the right. But if he plays in the centre, he has much more influence on the game and he can mean even more to the team. And I think that is the next step.
'He can score goals, give crosses, put people in front of the goal. We know that by now.
'The next step should be: what is his influence on the team in the end? Such a good player should play much more in the centre of the field.'
Yamal has played exclusively on the right wing for Barcelona this season, scoring 15 goals and laying on 24 assists in 51 appearances.
While their European dream is over for another season, Barcelona are four points clear at the summit of La Liga with four games remaining ahead of a huge Clasico with Real Madrid on Sunday. More Trending
Victory will effectively seal the title for the Catalan giants.
'We gave it our all — this year it couldn't be, but we'll be back, have no doubt about it,' Yamal wrote.
'Culers, we won't stop until we put this club where it belongs: at the very top. I will keep my promise and bring it to Barcelona; we won't stop until we achieve it.
'But Sunday is another final, and we all need to be together. Visca el Barça!'

Manchester United confident of strengthening squad during transfer window

Manchester United are understood to be confident that they can continue to strengthen their squad this summer after making reductions in the player wage bill and other cost savings. The club posted a pre-tax loss of £3.1million for the third quarter of the fiscal year in results published on Friday, way down on losses of £83.6m for the same period in the prior year. Total operating costs were down 20.4 per cent compared to the same quarter last year, driven by a reduction in the wage bill due to United's involvement in the Europa League instead of the Champions League, plus the January loan exits of the likes of Marcus Rashford and Antony. The reduction in costs was also attributable to the redundancy programme affecting non-playing staff, which began last year. Chief executive Omar Berrada admitted the club's 15th-place finish in the Premier League this season was 'below our standards' and said there was a 'clear expectation of improvement' next season. Changes in personnel seem certain to be required to achieve that and, while United insiders say the club intend to be disciplined about any investment they make this summer in order to remain compliant with the Premier League's profitability and sustainability rules (PSR), the reduction in operating costs alongside a 17.4 per cent increase in revenue does give them room for manoeuvre in the transfer market. The club are close to completing the £62.5m signing of Matheus Cunha from Wolves once his international duty is over and are also understood have a firm interest in Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo, with contact having been initiated with the London club. United posted a pre-tax loss of just under £36m for the nine months of the accounting period to date, significantly down on the loss of £89.2m at the same stage in the prior year. The club posted a pre-tax loss of £130.7m last year, raising concerns they might struggle to comply with PSR, where non-allowable losses must not exceed £105m over a three-year period. However, the PA news agency understands the accounts of UK-based Red Football Limited are those primarily relied upon by the Premier League and UEFA when determining compliance with their respective financial rules, rather than the results of the plc. The pre-tax loss for Red Football in the year ended June 30, 2024 was £36.25m, over £94m less than the plc's losses. United were found to be compliant with PSR for the most recent assessment period up to June 30, 2024.

And SunSport understands that while no official approach has yet been made, Robinson is on their managerial wishlist of possible replacements. The Northern Irishman has done a stellar job since moving to Paisley in February 2022. The Buddies have finished in the top six for three consecutive seasons, with Robinson also leading the club into Europe for the first time since 1987. The Saints beat Valur in the Europa Conference League last season before narrowly losing out to Brann in the third round. There are several other candidates currently under consideration by Plymouth, including former Watford boss Tom Cleverley and ex-Arsenal and Norwich City coach Jack Wilshere. Robinson is currently under contract in Paisley until the summer of 2027, with St Mirren expected to command a significant fee should a move come to fruition. SunSport revealed last month that QPR and Huddersfield had also considered former Motherwell boss Robinson for their dugout vacancies. Ryan Hardie is one well known face to Scottish football fans playing their football down at the South coast club, which beat Liverpool in the FA Cup in the season just past. Ange Postecoglou warned by former Tottenham star over Daniel Levy silence

Former Tottenham winger Aaron Lennon believes Spurs' silence on Ange Postecoglou's future indicates that the club are planning to sack the 59-year-old this summer. Postecoglou guided Spurs to their first trophy in 17 years with a 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the Europa League final last month. However, the Australian's future remains in doubt following Spurs' woeful Premier League campaign which saw them finish 17th in the table with 22 defeats. During Spurs' Europa League trophy parade, Postecoglou indicated that he would be staying on as manager by telling supporters: 'All the best television series… season three is better than season two.' However, Lennon feels Spurs' lack of clarification over Postecoglou's future suggests a change of manager could happen. Asked if Spurs need to clarify Postecoglou's position, Lennon told talkSPORT: 'One-hundred per cent, and that's for everyone, everyone to do with the football club and for the players to know where they're going. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video 'And also you've seen the other clubs now they're already spending early, so you need to get in the market. 'Spurs know they need players, they've just got Champions League football, and that's squad's not strong enough, it's not good enough, and the manager needs to be part of that process, so there does need to be clarification soon and fast to whether he's going to be staying or not. 'This awkward silence, I don't know if it's alarm bells, I don't like it, I don't think it looks good for Ange, in my opinion.' Asked if he would support Spurs' decision to sack Postecoglou, Lennon replied: 'It's a tough one for me. A lot of people have been asking me and I've been scratching my head about this one. 'Because the thing I always take into account is how do I reckon the players are still playing for him, are the players still behind the manager? I do believe that they are. 'Normally when a manager is getting sacked or he has lost the dressing room you can see that, you can see the way the team's playing, you can see it in their interviews after. 'But every player I've seen is so buzzing about Ange and they've always got so much good to say about him. 'It's a difficult one, I wouldn't be surprised if they got rid of Ange, I wouldn't be surprised.' More Trending Lennon also insists Spurs will be making a mistake if they keep delaying a decision over Postecoglou and their summer transfer plans. 'For me, if I was a manager and even for the players, it's so much better to get the players in early,' the former England winger said. 'Get them in that group in pre-season, going on pre-season trips, getting them bonding, especially if they're coming from different leagues, just to get them settled, their families settled, it's vital. 'For me, Spurs' squad at the minute is not good enough to play Champions League and to play three games a week at the highest level and then to be pushing up the league where they belong. They need to make investments and make them fast.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
