Leading baby food brands making high-sugar meals, study finds

Top brands such as Ella's Kitchen and Heinz are making sugar-heavy, nutritionally poor baby food that fails to meet the needs of infants, a study has found.
The discovery has spurred on groups to call for ministers to strengthen regulation in the market, saying that the current state of affairs will negatively affect child growth and development.
Researchers at the University of Leeds School of Food Science and Nutrition found that some brands also carried misleading marketing claims, leading them to urge the government to 'act now' in imposing the same traffic light system found on chocolate bars and ice-cream.
Ella's Kitchen pear and peach baby rice was found to have a rice content of only 3%; while sugar made up 60% of its calories.
Heinz fruity banana custard gets 71% of its total calories from sugar, with its ingredients only containing 4% milk powder; while its Baby Oat porridge is 29% sugar.
The study, funded by the Which? Fund, looked at 632 food products marketed towards babies and toddlers under three.
It found that 41% of main meals marketed for children had sugar levels that were too high and that 21% of ready-to-eat fruit products, cereals and meals were too watery and not providing adequate nutrition.
It also discovered that many early weaning foods were being sold as being suitable for babies aged four months, which goes against NHS and World Health Organization guidance.
The study also found that a quarter of the products analysed were so high in sugar they would require a sugar warning label on the front of the pack, in accordance with WHO guidelines. According to NHS guidelines, babies aged one should have no more than 10g of sugar per day, and no more than 14g per day for children aged two and three.
The sugar recommendation is applicable to naturally occurring free sugars and added sugars.
The report also surveyed more than 1,000 parents. It found that 70% of parents agreed that high sugar baby foods should have front-of-pack warning labels; while 59% were concerned about the high levels of naturally occurring sugars in food.
Dr Diane Threapleton, the lead author of the study, said: 'Voluntary guidelines are often ineffective, and so regulation is needed to make sure that change happens.
'With around 1.7 million children between six and 36 months in the UK, 'baby food' is a massive market. Widespread availability of inappropriate products with poor nutritional quality will negatively impact child growth and development.'

Dr Vicky Sibson, the director of First Steps Nutrition Trust, said: 'As a result of pervasive misleading marketing, parents are unwittingly buying products that are simply not good enough nutritionally. Stronger, mandatory baby food regulations are long overdue.'
Sue Davies, the head of food policy at Which?, said: 'The government urgently needs to update the out-of-date laws for commercial baby foods to ensure there are tighter controls on their composition – including limits on their sugar and salt content – make labelling clear and upfront and clamp down on any misleading marketing claims that suggest products are healthier than they really are.'
A spokesperson for Ella's Kitchen said: 'There is nothing misleading about the name of this product. It follows strict legislation on how foods must be named, and clearly reflects exactly what is in the pouch – pears, peach and baby rice – in order of quantity.
'Our 'no added sugar' claim is legally approved – and absolutely accurate. We never add sugar to our weaning products; all the sweetness comes naturally from the fruit and veg we use to make them.'
A spokesman for Kraft Heinz said: 'We're proud of the role we play in families' lives and remain committed to the health and wellbeing of infants and young children. We provide quality products based on nutrition science that meet the nutrient requirements specific to this life stage and adhere to stringent UK/EU regulation.
'Our convenient, resealable pouches, made from natural ingredients with no added sugars, should be used as a complementary part of a varied weaning diet (six+ months) and are designed to be squeezed into a bowl or straight on to a spoon – as communicated on pack.'
A Department of Health and Social Care spokesperson said: 'Existing laws already set nutrition needs for baby foods, and we support enforcement against any product that does not meet these expectations.'

The dangerous procedure was revealed in a report looking at the long delays facing people awaiting treatment for conditions in North Wales. The Citizen Experiences Report, presented during a meeting of the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board on Thursday, found frustrated patients were taking matters into their own hands due to long waits for help. It also described long waits experienced by patients in the emergency departments at Ysbyty Gwynedd, Ysbyty Wrexham Maelor, and Ysbyty Glan Clwyd. Patients waiting up to 36 hours had been reported and 'overcrowding, uncertainty, and discomfort' were also 'common concerns'. The public consultation had been part of a 'listening and understanding' initiative aimed at improving the design and delivery of care and services. There had been 300 enquiries from MPs and MSs over their constituents' experiences, with waiting times 'the main focus'. One had described a former nurse, now 84, who had been placed on the ophthalmology waiting list in June 2019, but who had waited around three years until being seen. 'She says that she then had some procedures which did not help, and eventually removed a cyst on her eye herself,' the report quoted. 'She is waiting for an eye operation, which was requested in October 2023, and her eyesight is deteriorating rapidly. 'As a former nurse and nurse manager, she has given her working life to care for other people. Now she needs some care of her own.' Another concerned a man who wished to enlist with the British Army, but was unable to because of the health of his teeth. The report said: 'He has not been able to find an NHS dentist nearby due to a chronic shortage of dentists in North Wales, and private dentists have quoted a minimum of £3,000 for treatment.' Waiting had also had a 'catastrophic impact' on one patient's life who suffered daily pain, and another, awaiting an operation for bladder stones, endured 'continual bleeding'. Community conversations also highlighted issues over outpatient waiting times, access to services, ambulance and emergency department delays, and communication. Llais, the body which gives people a 'voice', when accessing health services, had also gathered data. Comments included 'significant challenges' accessing timely and affordable primary care, difficulty accessing GP appointments and the absence or loss of NHS dental provision. Delayed treatment or self-management of dental problems had manifested 'sometimes in unsafe or distressing ways'. Comments included: 'I ended up filling my own tooth with a kit from the chemist.' Another patient reported waiting: '12 hours in a corridor on a trolley.' Long delays for specialist services, including audiology, cataract surgery, neuro-developmental assessment, and respiratory care were also ' a major concern'. The meeting heard that despite many views highlighting 'dissatisfaction or frustration', many other participants had also expressed 'gratitude' and praise for the 'professionalism and compassion' by hospital staff, members and teams. The report also described measures taken by the board to address calls for improvements. In dental care this included creating contracts worth over £1.5 million to expand NHS dental provision. Further procurement exercises, covering general dental services, orthodontics, oral surgery, and non-urgent access, also totalled over £5 million. MOST READ A new dental access portal, launched in February, was also helping 'simplify and centralise' access to care. Improvements to areas such as emergency departments, dermatology, gynaecology, physiotherapy musculoskeletal, cancer services, and a midwifery ward bereavement suite had also been implemented. In neuro-developmental services, providing mental health support for children and young people, a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) improvement programme was in place. The new Crisis Hub – Alternatives to Admission – service had also supported 266 people in its first quarter since opening in February. The board acknowledged that 'significant work' remained to address 'challenges' in a 'sustainable, long-term way'.

Nearly half of those patients have already waited more than 36 weeks, raising fears of avoidable, permanent vision loss. The latest figures come during Cataract Awareness Month and highlight what health professionals are calling a growing crisis in eye care across South Wales. Of the total waiting, more than 8,000 patients in the Hywel Dda University Health Board area are breaching target treatment times. Sam Evans, a consultant ophthalmologist in west Wales, said: "I'm frustrated. "We're seeing avoidable sight loss because people simply cannot get seen in time. "Cataracts are treatable, but patients don't need to wait as long as they are, and are coming to harm with these long waits." Mr Evans runs a private 'see and treat' cataract service in west Wales, working with optometrists who provide clinical referrals. His model offers telephone consultations and surgery within two to four weeks of referral, often requiring just a single hospital visit. He has also performed same-day bilateral cataract surgery for five years and believes the approach is both safe and efficient. Mr Evans said: "In many cases patients only need to come to the hospital once – for surgery on both eyes, and need no further visits. "This approach is fantastic for older patients who struggle to get to the hospital for repeated visits." The service has proven especially valuable in rural areas like Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire, and Ceredigion, where travel to hospital can be a major barrier. One patient, Ron Jenkins, waited more than two and a half years for NHS surgery before opting for Mr Evans' service. He said: "After waiting over two years on the NHS list, I was hesitant to go private but my vision was getting worse and affecting my daily life. "I wasn't sure about having a phone assessment at first, but it worked brilliantly. "I was offered a one-stop visit for assessment and surgery, saving me a 55-mile round trip. "The care was excellent, the surgery painless, and I'm now driving at night and reading fine measurements again, life back to normal." Optometrist Rachel Brady said: "Embracing the convenience of telephone consultations and the innovative 'see and treat' approach in cataract surgery transforms the patient experience, eliminating the need for multiple, time-consuming exams and logistical hurdles." Mr Evans believes June's Cataract Awareness Month should lead to real change. He said: "Awareness campaigns matter — but awareness alone isn't enough. "We need real action. "The solutions exist, but need to be put into place at scale."
