Thousands in west Wales waiting too long for eye care

Nearly half of those patients have already waited more than 36 weeks, raising fears of avoidable, permanent vision loss.
The latest figures come during Cataract Awareness Month and highlight what health professionals are calling a growing crisis in eye care across South Wales.
Of the total waiting, more than 8,000 patients in the Hywel Dda University Health Board area are breaching target treatment times.
Sam Evans, a consultant ophthalmologist in west Wales, said: "I'm frustrated.
"We're seeing avoidable sight loss because people simply cannot get seen in time.
"Cataracts are treatable, but patients don't need to wait as long as they are, and are coming to harm with these long waits."
Mr Evans runs a private 'see and treat' cataract service in west Wales, working with optometrists who provide clinical referrals.
His model offers telephone consultations and surgery within two to four weeks of referral, often requiring just a single hospital visit.
He has also performed same-day bilateral cataract surgery for five years and believes the approach is both safe and efficient.
Mr Evans said: "In many cases patients only need to come to the hospital once – for surgery on both eyes, and need no further visits.
"This approach is fantastic for older patients who struggle to get to the hospital for repeated visits."
The service has proven especially valuable in rural areas like Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire, and Ceredigion, where travel to hospital can be a major barrier.
One patient, Ron Jenkins, waited more than two and a half years for NHS surgery before opting for Mr Evans' service.
He said: "After waiting over two years on the NHS list, I was hesitant to go private but my vision was getting worse and affecting my daily life.
"I wasn't sure about having a phone assessment at first, but it worked brilliantly.
"I was offered a one-stop visit for assessment and surgery, saving me a 55-mile round trip.
"The care was excellent, the surgery painless, and I'm now driving at night and reading fine measurements again, life back to normal."
Optometrist Rachel Brady said: "Embracing the convenience of telephone consultations and the innovative 'see and treat' approach in cataract surgery transforms the patient experience, eliminating the need for multiple, time-consuming exams and logistical hurdles."
Mr Evans believes June's Cataract Awareness Month should lead to real change.
He said: "Awareness campaigns matter — but awareness alone isn't enough.
"We need real action.
"The solutions exist, but need to be put into place at scale."

Mrs Rayner, who lives in Willenhall in Walsall borough, supports women with breast cancer 40 years after she recovered from the same gives her personal phone number to patients she meets during monthly Walsall Manor Hospital visits, and at a charitable support group run by Walsall Breast Cancer Support Group. She often gets calls."They know they can phone you up at any time if they're feeling down," she said."They might say they're worried about hair and chemotherapy, and different drugs, and if they come to the support group they're bound to find someone going through the same thing." The support charity, which meets on the first Wednesday of each month at Bloxwich Golf Club, has also raised funds for Walsall Manor's cancer Rayner said she had been inspired to help others after she was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 37 and at a support group met a woman who had undergone a the time, nobody spoke about living with cancer, she said. "It was very scary at the time, which is where a support group comes in... we've helped no end of members."She acknowledged she was "probably one of the longest-serving volunteers" at the hospital, adding she would keep going for as long as she could."I think once you start doing volunteering you carry on for quite a bit... It is very rewarding," she said. About 200 people do unpaid work each year at Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust (WHT), with a further 250 helping out at The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust (RWT).Adam Jackson, 25, who now has a paid job after working for free for 10 months at New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton, said volunteering had given him "a real confidence boost".Mr Jackson, from the city, initially volunteered on the New Cross staff wellbeing hub and also the discharge lounge, serving refreshments and chatting to patients waiting to go has worked his way up to becoming a paid theatre support assistant at the hospital and said he enjoyed keeping patients calm before operations."Volunteering with RWT gave me a real confidence boost when it comes to meeting and working with new people, as well as experience for a hands-on style working environment," he said. Andrew Rice, head of Patient Voice at WHT and RWT, said hospitals would work with volunteers to find roles aligning with "not just what we need but also what they're looking for".He said it was important to give patients time to talk to people who were not medics."The volunteers are the heartbeat of the [trusts], their contribution to different services never goes unnoticed, and I can't thank them all enough for their hard work and commitment," he added. The public think Labour is handling almost every major issue poorly, according to bleak new polling. A survey of more than 8,000 Britons has shown that most think the Government is doing badly on all but two of 15 important policies. The YouGov research found that people are particularly scathing about the way Sir Keir Starmer 's administration is tackling three crucial areas. 'Undoubtedly, the public do mostly think the government are handling many key issues badly, with this particularly noticeable on the three issues that have consistently topped our most important issues tracker since the election: the NHS, immigration and the economy,' the pollster said. Three-quarters think immigration is being handled badly, with a majority (52 per cent) saying ministers are doing 'very badly', while only one in seven (14 per cent) give Labour positive marks. Seven in ten say the economy and NHS are being handled badly, in surveys carried out since May, compared with just one in five who support ministers' efforts. In addition, more than six in ten say the Government is doing a bad job on welfare (69 per cent), housing (66), crime (64) and inflation (62). The only faintly positive result concerns Labour's handling of terrorism, where 37 per cent say the Government is doing well and 34 per cent disagree. And on defence the public are split which 34 per cent disapproving of ministers' approach and 41 per cent backing it. However YouGov pointed out that 'the last Conservative government was also seen as doing better than average on these two issues, particularly terrorism, suggesting credit may not be due to Labour for managing these issues uniquely well'. It comes after Sir Keir plumbed new depths of unpopularity in YouGov's ratings tracker, with even half of Labour's own voters now holding an unfavourable view of him. In detailed findings that may particularly alarm No 10, the survey found that women have a particularly negative view of the Government. Only 16 per cent of women questioned said ministers were handling health well, compared with 26 per cent of men. 'Although the 20-point gender difference on the handling of the NHS is exceptionally large, the pattern is not unusual, with the government's net handling score lower among women on all but one issue polled (transport),' YouGov said. It comes amid claims five million pensioners face paying extra tax to claw back their winter fuel allowance. A complicated solution being mooted to defuse fury at Labour slashing the benefit - worth up to £300 - would see it handed to all the older generation this season. However, around half - with annual incomes over £37,000 - would repay the money later through higher tax bills. The idea has been condemned by unions amid fears bereaved families could be hit with unexpected demands for cash. Labour insiders have voiced alarm at the 'optics' of trying to recoup the allowance from the estates of those who died after getting it. Introducing a tough means test on winter fuel allowance was one of the first announcements Rachel Reeves made after entering No11, and has been blamed for triggering the dramatic slump in Labour's popularity. Only those on the lowest incomes, receiving pensioner credit, have been entitled to the handout.
