Patiala: Punjab health and family welfare minister Dr Balbir Singh on Thursday asked students to act as ambassadors of cleanliness.
Speaking during a state-level function at Govt Senior Secondary Smart School, Tripuri, Patiala, to mark National Deworming Day, the minister said nearly 73 lakh Albendazole tablets had been distributed to students in govt, aided, and private schools across Punjab.
Regular health screenings were being conducted to monitor children's health, the minister said.
Emphasizing on the dangers of stomach worms, Dr Balbir said they could lead to malnutrition, physical and mental weakness, and poor school attendance. He advised children to maintain personal hygiene, avoid walking barefoot, wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly, and drink boiled water.
To further promote hygiene and disease prevention, Dr Balbir Singh urged all residents to become part of the campaign to raise awareness about dengue and "War Every Friday", encouraging weekly cleanliness drives.
He also announced that students, teachers, and health workers actively contributing to clean surroundings will be specially honoured.
Speaking to media, Dr Balbir Singh highlighted that cheese, ghee, and spices are among the most adulterated food items. A state-wide sampling campaign is underway ahead of festivals, focusing on products coming from outside Punjab. He added that flying squads and a "Food Safety on Wheels" van are conducting surprise checks, including on food supplements, which were previously unchecked.
He also mentioned that the Health Department is working with partners to investigate rising cases of sudden cardiac deaths and has issued relevant advisories.

Even though the national medical commission once ordered yoga classes for all, it was not implemented in the state. "Yoga will help stimulate the brain, reduce stress and overcome addictions. Yoga is not just part of alternative medicine; it has become part of our lifestyle now, just like morning walks. Its benefits are now scientifically proven," he said. Probe after cardboard splints used to support bone fractures at DHH

Sambalpur: Authorities of Bargarh district headquarters hospital on Saturday launched an internal investigation after images of cardboard splints being allegedly used to support bone fractures of accident victims went viral. Bargarh's chief district medical and public health officer, Kuber Chandra Mohanta, told TOI, "The images of cardboard splints used to support bone fractures are from four days back, but the exact time when the incident took place is under investigation. We are finding out how many patients were given cardboard splints." While the videos of cardboard casts being used are being circulated for a week, the hospital authorities are yet to ascertain how many days the "makeshift treatment" was done. Mohanta added, "Accident patients with bone injuries are directly referred to Vimsar, Burla, as Bargarh DHH doesn't have an orthopaedic surgeon for the last six years. Accident patients having only minor injuries are treated at the DHH." Social volunteers claimed the accident victims were given preliminary treatment at the DHH to stop the bleeding, and then cardboard splints were used to keep their limbs straight, and then they were bandaged. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like These Are The Most Beautiful Women In The World Undo The patients were taken to Vimsar for further treatment.
