Son Heung-min leaves pitch in tears after final Tottenham appearance against Newcastle
Son Heung-min was in tears after playing for Tottenham for what looks to be the final time as the South Korean prepares to leave the north London outfit.
The forward confirmed he would leave Spurs this summer but he captained the side for the final time as they played Newcastle in a pre-season friendly in his homeland.
Son was given a guard of honour by both sets of players when he was subbed off, but whilst he walked off smiling the Tottenham icon was seen in tears on the bench with his head in his hands. He later enjoyed the limelight as he was hoisted into the air by his team-mates.
He is now in advanced talks to join MLS side LAFC, which would to an end almost a decade at Tottenham. The former Premier League Golden Boot winner has confessed he's found it a hugely challenging decision to make but the club continue to make changes as they embark on a new era.
Son is now 33 and last season was not as influential as he has been. New manager Thomas Frank has continued to pursue and capture new players, who are likely to hamper the South Korean's playing time and involvement.
Earlier this week the Tottenham striker said: 'I came to north London as a kid - a very young age, a young boy came to London who even didn't speak English. Leaving this club as a grown man is a very, very proud moment.'
The new Tottenham boss also gave a pretty clear hint that his outing in his native South Korea was likely to be Son's final appearance as he declared him 'one of the greatest players to play in the Premier League'. Frank said: 'If that is the last game for Sonny, what a place to do it here in front of his home fans. A beautiful ending.'
Son has scored 173 goals in 454 games for Spurs and last season captained them to their first trophy in 17 years when they beat Manchester United in the Europa League final. That game in Bilbao may well turn out to be his final competitive appearance for the club.
It was the forward who lifted the trophy and jokingly claimed he was now a club legend after being front and centre for the historic moment.
"Let's say I'm a legend. Why not?" he told TNT Sports after the final. "Seventeen years - nobody has done it, so let's say with amazing players, [I am] probably a legend of the club. This is what I've always dreamed for. Today is the day it happened. I am the happiest man in the world."

Benjamin Sesko facing Man Utd or Newcastle decision dilemma with Amorim willing to flog Hojlund to make room for him
BENJAMIN SESKO could choose his Premier League dream team after Manchester United rivalled Newcastle with a £74million offer. Toon are also working on a deal for RB Leipzig striker Sesko, 22, after lodging a similar bid earlier this week but United have now made their move. 7 7 7 The Red Devils offered an initial £65m plus around £8.9m in performance-related add-ons. The Slovenia striker will train away from his team-mates on Wednesday morning in Germany as both Prem clubs fight for his signature. Leipzig hope that a bidding war cranks up over the next few days to drive up the price. If both offers remain the same, Sesko could be able to pick between which club he wants to join after telling BOTH he is open to a move. Despite Newcastle playing in the Champions League this season, United will still fancy their chances of landing one of Europe's hottest young prospects. United are desperate for a new striker after failing in their attempt to sign Viktor Gyokeres, who joined Arsenal in a £63.5m deal. United boss Ruben Amorim is also willing to let Rasmus Hojlund leave the club in order to make space for Sesko, even if United only receive a £30m transfer fee. Newcastle are keen to sign Sesko, knowing they could lose Alexander Isak to Liverpool. 7 Meanwhile, the Red Devils have rejected FIVE different approaches to sell Harry Maguire this transfer window. United have turned down three Prem clubs and two bids from Italy for the England defender. Maguire's deal ends this season, meaning he can sign a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club from January. But he is ready to give United everything despite his contract situation. Maguire, 32, who has won the Carabao Cup and FA Cup since signing from Leicester in an £85m deal in 2019, said: 'I just want to be part of a successful team this season. 'Last season was a tough season for everyone individually — but also as a team, as a squad, and as a club. 7 7 'This season, there are no excuses. 'We're going to have a lot of time to prepare for the Premier League games — and we've got to make sure we're ready. 'For myself, it's making sure I'm available, I'm fit, I'm ready to go, and give everything I can to this team and this club.'

John Stones warns Man City have ‘fire in our bellies' after disappointing season
John Stones is convinced Manchester City have the 'fire in our bellies' to regain their Premier League title. City surrendered the crown they won in the previous four seasons to Liverpool during an underwhelming 2024-25 campaign. Defender Stones believes lessons have been learned and has detected a strong desire to put things right since the players have reported for pre-season training. To me, to you 💫🥶 — Manchester City (@ManCity) August 5, 2025 The England international said: 'It was humbling for us after all the success that we've had. 'It makes us realise what we've done, what we've achieved over the years and how proud we should be, but we're obviously frustrated at what we did last season. It's not what we want to replicate. 'To finish third, three or four points behind Arsenal is – to our standards – not good, (nor) how we played through the season. 'We've got to put that right and get back to our identity, get back to winning matches and having that presence about us and believing in ourselves as a team. 'I'm sure we'll find that and bring it back because it was tough last season to go through what we did. We've definitely come back with that fire in our bellies to go and achieve.' Stones is now fit after an injury-hit past season but was not risked by manager Pep Guardiola during the Club World Cup in the summer. Despite not featuring, the 31-year-old made emphatically clear when speaking to media during that tournament that he would not be leaving the club. Entering the final year of his contract, there had been speculation about his future but the former Everton player hopes that has now been shut down. He said: 'It's laughable to me. I understand why people do it but there's nothing to comment on. 'I love it here, nothing's happening. I'm here to fight and play and hopefully win some trophies.' Stones was speaking as City held an open training session alongside the club's women's side at the Joie Stadium on the fringe of their training complex on Tuesday. Together 🩵 — Manchester City (@ManCity) August 5, 2025 City now have a friendly at Palermo on Saturday before facing Wolves in their opening Premier League game at Molineux on August 16. The side is taking on a different shape with new signings Rayan Cherki, Rayan Ait-Nouri and Tijjani Reijnders having been integrated during the Club World Cup, in which City reached the last 16. Their arrivals continued a squad refresh after the signings of Omar Marmoush, Nico Gonzalez, Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis in January. Stones said: 'Things evolve, football evolves, and the guys that have come in have been great. 'It takes a bit of time, obviously, to get used to the style of play, what's expected, but the guys have come in for a reason. 'With the quality that they've got, the aspects of the game are different from what we've had in the past. I'm excited to play with them and see what they do.'

Liverpool make final transfer decision on Marc Guehi after two bids rejected
Marc Guehi remains a Crystal Palace player for now but Premier League champions Liverpool are admirers of the England centre-back and have attempted two transfer bids Liverpool have no plans to return with a third Marc Guehi bid after seeing two approaches rebuffed, it has been claimed. Crystal Palace have been playing hardball over their captain, with England star Guehi one of a number of in-demand Eagles stars. Palace appear determined to keep hold of as many senior figures as possible as they gear up for a European campaign. Ebere Eze remains a target for Arsenal, while plenty of clubs are known to be fans of Jean-Philippe Mateta and Liverpool aren't the only admirers of Guehi. Newcastle and Tottenham made efforts to sign the defender last summer, but he stayed at Selhurst Park and helped Palace win the FA Cup. Guehi is in the final year of his contract, but that hasn't seen his team entertain a sale on the cheap. According to Foot Mercato (via Sport Witness), Palace still want close to £48m for their skipper. Neither of Liverpool's two offers have hit that mark, and the Reds are now said to be ready to look at alternative targets. Arne Slot's side do still need bodies at centre-back, having sold Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen. Ibrahima Konate has yet to agree an extension to his current deal, which expires next summer, while Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez have just two years left on their respective deals. Palace and Liverpool are due to face off in Sunday's Community Shield, after winning the FA Cup and Premier League respectively last term. The match will provide a chance for Guehi to remind the league champions of his quality, though he is not expected to look to force a move away. Oliver Glasner's side geared up for the match with a double header against Augsburg, winning one meeting and losing te other. Liverpool also had a double header at the start of the month, winning both games against Athletic Club at Anfield. 'The guys are in top shape; they obviously know the drills. That makes it easy," Palace boss Glasner said after his team's final friendly. "Now it's just a matter of getting match-fit. That's why they needed 90 minutes of exercise in their legs. 'We actually had another friendly match planned… but now we have a Community Shield against Liverpool instead! But of course, we're happy to take that. You could say it could be worse!" Liverpool boss Slot has been impressed with the Reds' new arrivals as they look to make up for the departure of the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold. "We've lost with Trent a lot of creativity from the back," he said after the Athletic friendlies. "Trent's crosses and picking out runners was so special – I think Flo [Florian Wirtz] has this quality as well in a totally different position. But he brings that creativity, the pace of Hugo [Ekitike], the pace of both full-backs – Milos [Kerkez] and Jeremie [Frimpong] today."
