Gunderson: Scotland 'ready for battle' against England

The two sides face off against one another in the opening round of fixtures of the 2025 Six Nations Women's Summer Series at the Centre for Sporting Excellence in Ystrad Mynach, Caerphilly.
It is the second edition of the U20 tournament, which debuted in Italy, and after suffering three defeats out of three 12 months ago, the class of 2025 only have eyes for success in Wales this time around.
And Gunderson, who is part of a leadership group of four and will captain her country against England, knows her team is ready for the challenge ahead.
'Every single one of the girls is up for the battle that we're going to be given, which will be really good,' the 21-year-old back rower said.
'We will fight for it, we're ready to go out there and show what we can do and what we're worth.'
Gunderson plays domestically for Corstorphine Cougars/Edinburgh Rugby, having started playing the sport aged four due to her father being a coach at Forrester Rugby Club, and explained there's a good feeling around the camp ahead of their opening clash.
'We're really excited, we've had such a big build-up this year which has been really nice,' she continued.
'Going from Italy last year to come to [Wales] this year, it's good vibes. We've had really good vibes in the squad, and it's been really nice to be around.'
Following on from the 2024 Women's Summer Series, 14 players across the six countries went on to achieve senior honours during the 2025 Guinness Women's Six Nations, including Scotland's Molly Poolman.
And Gunderson highlighted the importance of the competition for giving players the opportunity to standout and to use it as a springboard to break into the senior team.
'It's a massive incentive for the girls,' she added.
'It's a great incentive to kick-off the World Cup too; that we can play before it and show what we can do.
'It's massively important this tournament exists and is shown on the platforms that they've got. We can show that women's rugby is growing and going from strength to strength.'
With women's rugby on an upward trajectory, the 2025 Six Nations Women's Summer Series is a big chance for stars of the future to gain vital international experience, graduate along the development pathway, while also inspiring a new generation of rugby fans.
Julie Paterson, Chief of Rugby at Six Nations Rugby, said: 'The Women's Summer Series is an essential part of the strategy and commitment of Six Nations Rugby, and the six unions and federations, to proactively support the creation and growth of opportunities in the women's game.'
Spread across three dates during July, Scotland will also face Wales on 11 July before rounding off their campaign against Ireland six days later.

England icon Paul Gascoigne 'doing well' after collapse and trip to hospital

Paul Gascoigne's representative says the England football icon is 'doing well' and has returned home after a reported collapse and trip to hospital. Gascoigne was found 'semi-conscious' in the bedroom of his home and initially admitted to an intensive care unit, The Sun reported this weekend. The 58-year-old, nicknamed 'Gazza', has long been of concern among many supporters due to his well known battles with alcohol addiction and mental health struggles – although he did reportedly remain sober for three months over the summer. Gascoigne's representative has now provided an update on the man who helped lead England to the semi-finals of the 1990 World Cup and Euro 1996, widely considered one of the most talented players of his generation. 'Paul voluntarily went into A&E on Friday after struggling with a throat condition he has had for a while,' Carly Saward told the Associated Press. Saward, who works for the MNT talent agency, added: 'He is already back home and doing well.' Gascoigne is a legend for his country and a number of clubs he played for during his career – adored for his skill on the pitch and his personality off it. He is best known for his spells at Newcastle United, Tottenham, Lazio and Rangers and was capped 57 times by the Three Lions from 1988 to 1998. In March 2024, Gascoigne admitted he was a 'sad drunk' as he publicly opened up about his battle to stay sober. 'I used to be a happy drunk, I ain't anymore,' he said on the High Performance podcast. 'I'm a sad drunk. I don't go out and drink, I drink indoors. If I want to make it a bad day, [all I need to do is] go down the pub. 'If I want it to be a good day, I get my flying rod out and go fishing. It's not the drinking, it's the afterwards. 'Looking at my phone after and seeing 30 messages or missed calls, I know I'm in trouble. 'But I've been alright. Last year (2023) wasn't brilliant, was off and on for a couple of months.' 'You had to see a psychiatrist. If you pass the psychiatrist's test, you're in. I failed five f***ing times,' he told The Sun. It does not necessarily reflect the view of The Herald. Former England skipper Sarah Hunter believes Zoe Aldcroft deserves a happy World Cup ending at the 2025 Rugby World Cup. The Scarborough native was forced off with a concussion in the first half of the World Cup final three years ago as England went on to lose to hosts New Zealand. Aldcroft, who plays at lock, was named England captain earlier this year, nine years on from her Red Roses debut and will be reaming of lifting the trophy come September. 'Zoe Aldcroft is an unbelievable player, I think she just underestimates the presence that she has,' Hunter said. 'I am in awe when I watch her train; she is a machine. 'Her ability to just go to places where other people don't, her impact in a game and her work rate. 'The engine that she has, a lot of the unseen work she does but then she will have a moment of brilliance. 'She galvanises the team around her, when she speaks people listen. People can't not be inspired by the way she plays the game, the way she puts her body on the line.' Fresh threads for a big year 💙 The #RedRoses alternate kit for the 2025/26 season is here 🌹 — Red Roses (@RedRosesRugby) July 21, 2025 Hunter has gone from captaining Aldcroft to coaching her, serving as England's defence coach since 2023. She transitioned into coaching immediately after retiring and has been supported by the Gallagher High Performance Academy. The initiative run by World Rugby will have helped almost 50 female coaches earn valuable coaching experience with their unions by the end of the 2025 Rugby World Cup, which begins on 22 August in Sunderland. Aldcroft is expected to lead England at a home World Cup, which the Red Roses enter the tournament as the overwhelming favourites and world number ones. Hunter added: 'Different coaches have different reasons of why they select their captain, but when you watch her play, she is definitely someone who is the standard bearer of how you want the game to be played. 'She is the one who you think 'I will follow you into battle', and quite often as captain that is what you want. 'You want someone out there, leading the charges, in front, Zoe Aldcroft will never take a backward step. 'The way she galvanises the team, the way she motivates them, she is just brilliant all-round. 'I really hope she gets the World Cup ending she deserves this time around, she got taken off in the final through a concussion, she is a pretty special player.'
