US women cruise past China in friendly win
Goals from Catarina Macario, Sam Coffey and Lindsey Heaps delivered a convincing win for the American women, who dominated a fragile Chinese side at Saint Paul, Minnesota.
It was the 17th win in 21 games for the USA's English head coach Hayes, who was tasked with restoring the Americans to the summit of the women's game following their early 2023 World Cup exit.
Hayes, who led the USA to a gold medal at last year's Olympics, is preparing her squad for this year's qualifiers for the 2027 World Cup in Brazil.
The former Chelsea manager would have liked what she saw in a fluid first half performance that saw China's risky tactical decision to play with a high line punished ruthlessly.
Macario opened the scoring after 28 minutes, bundling home a close-range finish after good work from Alyssa Thompson.
The USA doubled their tally seven minutes later with a brilliantly worked goal, which began when the gifted 17-year-old midfielder Lily Yohannes released Thompson down the right who crossed for Macario.
Macario played a short pass into Coffey, who swept home with aplomb.
Macario and Heaps both threatened to add to the USA tally with long-range shots that were just off target before half-time.
Heaps though bagged the USA's third in the 54th minute, nodding in past China goalkeeper Pan Hongyan to effectively seal the win.

Wales wing Rees-Zammit returns to rugby with Bristol after NFL dream ends
LONDON: Bristol have signed Louis Rees-Zammit following his return to rugby union after the Wales wing gave up on his 18-month long bid to break into the NFL. English Premiership side Bristol said Thursday that Rees-Zammit was joining with "immediate effect" ahead of the new league season. No further details about his contract were disclosed. The 24-year-old dramatically left rugby union in January 2024 to pursue a career in American football and was on the training squads of the Kansas City Chiefs and Jacksonville Jaguars, but did not play in a regular-season game. Earlier this month Rees-Zammit, who made his name in rugby union with Gloucester, a fierce local rival of Bristol, said he was returning to the 15-a-side code. He spent last season with Jacksonville Jaguars, having been cut by the Chiefs the previous campaign, but failed to make an NFL appearance for either franchise as a wide receiver after originally switching sports by joining the NFL's International Player Pathway Program last year. By then he had already scored 14 tries in 32 Tests for Wales and been selected for the 2021 British and Irish Lions tour of South Africa. Bristol, who reached the Premiership semi-finals last season before losing to eventual champions Bath, are one of the most attacking teams in English rugby's top flight. Their 95 tries was the joint-highest in the division during the 2024/25 campaign and Rees-Zammit said their approach made them an "obvious choice." "The style of rugby the team play — all about entertaining the fans and growing the game — perfectly aligns to how I want to play and how I express myself on and off the field," Rees-Zammit said in a Bristol statement. "I want to get fans out of their seats, create exciting moments and help people fall in love with the game. I'm excited to return to rugby at a club that demands those values." Bristol's opening match of the new Premiership season is against Leicester on Sept 28. Rees-Zammit made his Gloucester debut soon after turning 18 and went on to score 42 tries in 77 matches for the Cherry and Whites during a six-year stint at Kingsholm. His first Wales cap came in 2020 aged 19, with his speed and finishing ability making him a rising star of the sport. Gauff cruises into Cincinnati quarter-final with Paolini
CINCINNATI: Coco Gauff eased past Lucia Bronzetti yesterday to book a Cincinnati Open quarter-final meeting with Jasmine Paolini, although the American showed signs of some minor rust after receiving a bye in the previous round. Gauff had got a free pass into the last 16 when intended opponent Dayana Yastremska withdrew before the start with injury. But the 21-year-old put her relative lack of time on the court behind her as she won through 6-2, 6-4 against Bronzetti to reach the last eight, despite suffering early breaks of serve in both sets. Gauff will be playing her third 1000-level quarter-final of the season after Madrid and Rome — both of which she went on to reach the final. She will next meet the player who downed her in the Rome final, after Paolini brushed aside two-time Grand Slam champion Barbora Krejcikova 6-1, 6-2 in the day's second match on center court. Gauff said after defeating Bronzetti that memories of her 2023 title success at Cincinnati come to the surface whenever she is in the tournament's showpiece arena. Lyon terminate veteran Matic's contract a year early
LYON: Former Serbian international Nemanja Matic has reached an "amicable" agreement for the early termination of his contract with Lyon, the Ligue 1 club said Thursday. The 37-year-old former Manchester United, Chelsea and Benfica midfielder's contract had been due to run until June 30, 2026. However the club has opted to shed one of its highest paid players as part of its effort to significantly reduce its payroll. Matic arrived in January 2024 from league rivals Rennes and played a key role in helping Lyon move from last at the 2023-2024 winter break to finish sixth, qualifying for the Europa League, and playing in the French Cup final, losing 2-1 to Paris Saint-Germain. He has made a total of 58 appearances for Lyon who open their campaign at Lens on Saturday. Matic earned 48 caps for Serbia between 2008 and 2020.
