Over 12,000 violence cases against women reported this year based on government data
The ministry said the figure highlighted the urgency of addressing gender-based violence through coordinated measures, in line with the National Women's Policy 2025–2030.
During an event, the ministry outlined several government initiatives to combat violence against women, including the National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security (WPS), the enforcement of the Anti-Sexual Harassment Act 2022 (Act 840), and the establishment of the Anti-Sexual Harassment Tribunal (TAGS).
Deputy Women, Family, and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Noraini Ahmad said these initiatives were aimed to strengthen women's role as leaders, protectors, and agents of national transformation.
She was speaking at the 'Inspirasi Wanita: Secure. Lead. Transform' programme today. Also present were Women's Development Department (JPW) director-general Hanani Sapit and senior officials from the ministry and its agencies.
'Women who feel secure will be more confident to lead. Women who lead will shape a future that is safer, fairer, and more just,' she said.
She said such efforts reflected the MADANI government's commitment to protecting women from abuse and empowering them to participate fully in the nation's economic, social, digital, and security sectors.
The programme, organised by the ministry through JPW, brought together women from the public sector, private industry, and civil society to foster leadership potential and promote safety and well-being in line with the National Women's Policy and Women's Development Action Plan 2025–2030.

Judge Datuk Anselm Charles Fernandis handed down the sentence on Shahrul Nizam Zuraimy, 36, at the end of the defence case. The court ordered him to serve 36 years' imprisonment and 12 strokes for each charge, with the sentences running consecutively, starting from the date of arrest on Oct 11, 2019. The charges, framed under Section 302 of the Penal Code, carry the death penalty or a maximum 40-year prison sentence. If the death penalty is not imposed, whipping of no fewer than 12 strokes is mandatory. Earlier, Norfazera's mother and sister, in their impact statements, urged the court to impose a commensurate sentence, including the death penalty, citing the trauma endured by the family and the brutality of the killings. Deputy Public Prosecutors Mohd Asri Abd Rahman Sidik and Nur Syazwanie Marizan also sought either the death penalty or consecutive prison sentences, stressing that the accused had betrayed his role as protector of the victims. "The accused was supposed to protect the victims, but instead killed them, including a child who was his stepson. The court must balance public interest with the severity of the cruelty committed,' they argued. The prosecution also noted that the factor of regret raised by the defence should be weighed carefully, as although the accused eventually surrendered, he initially misled the victims' family about their whereabouts and fled to Singapore after the crime. Muhyiddin urges govt to enact anti-bullying law following Zara's death
KUALA LUMPUR: Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has urged the government to enact an Anti-Bullying Act that would impose strict punishments on bullies and hold accountable any parties negligent in protecting students' safety in schools and higher learning institutions. The Perikatan Nasional chairman said he took note of the Attorney General's Chambers' decision to expedite the inquest into the death of Zara Qairina Mahathir, stressing that the inquest must be conducted transparently, comprehensively, and in accordance with the law in order to uncover the truth and deliver justice. 'The incident of bullying that caused injuries and death to a student cannot be taken lightly," the Bersatu president said said in a Facebook post Monday (Aug 18). "It must not be allowed to become part of the culture, especially in our schools and universities,' he said in a statement today. According to him, clear legal and policy frameworks are urgently needed to safeguard students from abuse, whether physical or emotional — that endangers their safety and lives. 'With an Anti-Bullying Act, enforcement authorities will have stronger measures to protect students from acts of cruelty. Firm legal action must be taken to ensure such heartbreaking incidents never happen again,' he stressed. He likened bullying in schools, particularly boarding schools, to a 'giant elephant in the room' that continues to persist if left unchecked. 'We must stand together to eradicate this culture of bullying which I believe is still widespread today. Let us not allow these vile practices that threaten the safety and lives of our children to continue,' he said. Muhyiddin also extended his condolences to Zara Qairina's parents and family, praying that they remain strong in facing the grief of losing their loved one. The 15-year-old student's death has sparked public outcry and renewed calls for comprehensive anti-bullying measures across the nation.
