Forum: Canopies with solar panels can make shophouse districts cool
I read with interest the recent commentary on revitalising Singapore's nightlife (
Revitalise nightlife? Let's get the crowds out first , Aug 16).
The Government's move to allow alcohol to be sold till 4am on Thursdays and Fridays is a good one, as is the writer's suggestion to start car-free zones earlier to support activities for the sober curious.
However, more can be done to make visiting our shophouse districts appealing during the day. Rising temperatures are discouraging people from going out, and the lack of shade on these streets worsens the problem.
It may be time for the authorities to consider permanently pedestrianising these streets and erecting canopies over them. Similar concepts already exist in Clarke Quay and Smith Street.
However, the falling cost of solar panels gives us the opportunity to improve on these through canopies that incorporate alternating panels of solar cells and clear glass. This enables energy to be harvested while still letting natural light through.
The canopies can cut the amount of electricity needed for air-conditioning, leading to lower operating costs. They can also enhance thermal comfort for visitors by shielding them from the sun.
These improvements would make Singapore's shophouse districts more enjoyable and more sustainable.

Russia has 'special mechanisms' to supply oil to India, embassy official says
Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox NEW DELHI - Russia will continue supplying oil to India and the country's President Vladimir Putin will meet India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi by the end of year, a Russian embassy official in India said on Wednesday. Russia has a "very, very special mechanism" to continue oil supplies to India, Roman Babushkin, the charge d'affaires at the Russian embassy in India, told reporters at a press briefing, adding that India's crude oil imports from Russia will remain at the same level. No dates had been finalised for the Putin-Modi meeting yet, he said. The U.S. is set to impose an additional 25% tariff on Indian exports on August 28, citing their imports of Russian oil, which expanded after Western nations sanction Russian supply after its invasion of Ukraine. However, the U.S. has stopped short of imposing similar tariffs on China over its purchases of Russian oil. Last month, the European Union sanctioned Russian-backed Indian refinery Nayara Energy, leading the refiner to cut back processing and companies to curtail their trading with them. Trade between Indian and Russia was expected to grow 10% annually, Evgeniy Griva, Deputy Trade Representative of Russia to India said at the briefing. REUTERS

Grab users in Singapore shocked by fares of over $1,000 due to display glitch
Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox Several social media users shared screenshots of the drastic hike in Grab fares. SINGAPORE – Some Grab customers in Singapore were taken aback on Aug 20 after the ride-hailing mobile app briefly displayed fares that exceeded $1,000 due to a glitch. The unusually high fares , even for short trips within the country, were visible for about 20 minutes from around noon . In response to queries, a Grab spokesperson said the price spike was the result of a temporary display error. 'We encountered a temporary system issue that led to abnormally high prices being wrongly displayed in our app,' the company said in a statement. 'The issue has been resolved, and the app is now functioning as usual. We deeply regret the inconvenience caused.' Bloomberg reported that users in neighbouring Malaysia also experienced similar pricing anomalies. Several users took to social media to share screenshots of the drastic hike in fares. His fare was listed as $1,511.80. In another screenshot, the cost of a ride from Tampines to Kinex mall in Katong was listed as $1,012. One user commented: 'I wonder if anyone checked the fare or simply clicked on book.' Grab's system is designed such that bookings with unusually high fares would not have typically gone through. However, the company is in the midst of doing checks and those who were charged for the high fares would be compensated. Grab, which is backed by US-based Uber Technologies, is the dominant ride-hailing operator in Singapore, as well as other markets in region including Malaysia and Thailand. Uber exited South-east Asia in 2018, transferring its operations to Grab in exchange for a stake in the company. Grab now faces stiff competition from Indonesia's GoTo Group and several smaller rivals in the region.
