Tennis-Sinner plays down split with trainer and physio ahead of Wimbledon

LONDON (Reuters) -Parting company with two of your team days before Wimbledon might not sound ideal but world number one Jannik Sinner has played down any negative impact as he prepares for the grass-court Grand Slam.
The 23-year-old Italian surprisingly split with Marco Panichi and Ulises Badio, his trainer and physiotherapist respectively, after the Halle tournament and was asked about the situation on Saturday.
"Nothing major happened. Nothing big happened. I parted ways not long ago but it's not affecting me. I feel ready to compete. I feel free. I feel me and my team, we are ready to do the best we can," Sinner, who is bidding to win his first Wimbledon title, told reporters.
"We've reached incredible results in the past with them, so obviously huge thanks to them. We made some great job, but I decided to do something different."
Panichi and Badio had been part of Sinner's team since September 2024 and helped him to win this year's Australian Open to take his career Grand Slam haul to three. He also reached the French Open final this month but lost a thriller to Carlos Alcaraz.
"Look, in this sport things can happen. Sometimes a player feels something different, and that's my case."
Sinner suffered a crushing disappointment at Roland Garros where he lost to Alcaraz having led by two sets.
He won one match at Halle before losing to Alexander Bublik, but said he was mentally prepared for Wimbledon where he hopes to become the first Italian singles champion.
"Honestly, I feel ready to play. I feel ready. We are practising very well. What happened in the past is in the past already," said Sinner, who faces fellow Italian Luca Nardi in the first round.
"I feel good. Especially mentally I feel in a very good spot. Halle was a little bit different. Now it's gone and I see also the reactions of other players and people, they talked the level (of the French Open final) was very high.
"I feel like that I'm playing great, great tennis on grass. Hopefully I can show this also in the match court."
Sinner served a three-month suspension earlier this year after agreeing a settlement with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) in February after authorities accepted that the anabolic agent clostebol had entered his system inadvertently via massages from his former physio Giacomo Naldi at Indian Wells in March 2024.
During his time away he explored some new talents, recording a single with Italian opera great Andrea Bocelli in which he speaks his lines.
While he will not be giving up the day job, Sinner said it had been great to do something completely different.
"I felt like especially in these three months where I couldn't play, it was the right timing to do also the video together and everything," he said.
"Obviously he's an incredible artist. Just being part of this for me was amazing. It was a big, big work, a work in progress. I think we are all very happy how it came out."

(AP pic) LONDON : Briton Emma Raducanu said she felt reassured about her safety after Wimbledon prevented a man who had been stalking her from buying tickets for the Grand Slam that begins on Monday. The former US Open champion had been followed by the man to WTA events in Singapore, Abu Dhabi and Doha earlier this year, and she broke down in tears after noticing him during one of her matches at the Dubai Championships in February. The man was given a restraining order by Dubai police and banned from all Tour events but officials at Wimbledon, which is organised by the All England Club, had to block him following a sweep of the public ballot applicants. 'Wimbledon and everyone did an amazing job,' Raducanu told the BBC. 'I got a notification, the police contacted me and told me everything was OK.' 'I know that I'm not the first athlete to go through this, and I probably won't be the last – not just as an athlete, but females in general.' The 22-year-old, who had not yet been born when then world number one Monica Seles was stabbed in the back by a fan at an event in 1993, said she felt much safer with extra security at events. 'I have a lot more protection around me – especially the ones here in the UK, where it's busy and there's more spectators around. I feel a difference, and that reassures me and makes me feel more comfortable,' she added. Raducanu also praised British number two Katie Boulter for sharing her experience of online abuse. 'I try and not read the comments or look at the messages because it makes you upset,' she said. 'It doesn't matter how many positive comments you read, you are always going to remember the more negative ones – so I just try and stay away.'

Wimbledon champions to receive record £3mil in prize money

(AP pic) LONDON : Wimbledon has increased its prize money for this year's championships to £53.5 million, a 7% increase on 2024 and double what they offered a decade ago, the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) said today. The singles champions will receive three million pounds each, the highest across all Grand Slams and a 11.1% increase on the prize money Carlos Alcaraz and Barbora Krejcikova took home last year. Singles players who exit the first round will receive £66,000, a 10% increase on last year. Doubles prize money has also increased by 4.4%, mixed doubles by 4.3% and the wheelchair and quad wheelchair events by 5.6%. The increase also comes after the world's top players called for significant improvements in prize money at the four Grand Slams as a way to ensure a more equitable distribution of revenue. 'We have listened to the players, we have engaged with the players,' AELTC chair Deborah Jevans said. 'But the focus on just the prize money at the four events, the Grand Slams, does not get to the heart of what the challenge is with tennis. 'The challenge with tennis is the fact that the players don't have an off-season which they want, they have increasing injuries that they're speaking about.' Jevans added that Wimbledon is willing to engage and talk with the tours to try and find solutions but there has not been any proposal as to how the tour is able to change its structure. Final at 4pm The AELTC also said the doubles finals on the weekend would start at 1pm local time and the singles finals at 4pm. Such a change could potentially change playing conditions – like having the roof closed and the lights switched on – if the match runs long and well into the night. The French Open final this month where Alcaraz beat Jannik Sinner lasted five hours and 29 minutes, but AELTC chief executive Sally Bolton said the change in timing would ensure an 'improved experience' for all. 'Whether that's the doubles finalists having greater certainty over their schedule, whether it's the fans having the opportunity to experience a day which builds to the crescendo of the singles finals or ensuring that we have our champions crowned in front of the widest possible audience,' she said. No line judges This year's championships also marks a break with an age old tradition where line judges will be replaced for the first time with the electronic line calling system that is in place at tournaments worldwide. Bolton said 'the time is right to move on', adding that many line judges would return in different roles as match assistants, with two assigned per court. 'They're extra eyes and ears, the assistant to the chair umpire… We've got about 80 of those across the Championships. 'They'll also provide one of the parts of our resilience in the event that the electronic line calling system goes down at any point in time.'
