Nearly two months after communal violence rocked West Bengal's Murshidabad district during anti-Waqf demonstrations, police on Tuesday arrested two men alleged to be the masterminds of the April protest that sparked the unrest.According to police sources, the arrested duo, Kausar Sheikh and Mursalim Sheikh, were involved in mobilising the crowd that had gathered at Samsherganj's Dakbungalow intersection to protest against the Waqf (Amendment) Act. Both are residents of Samsherganj and are said to be linked to an NGO.advertisementPolice said they ran a local campaign to draw people to the protest site.
The two were produced in the Jangipur sub-divisional court on Tuesday, where police sought their custody for further questioning. The April protest turned violent after clashes broke out between police and the protesters during anti-Waqf demonstration. The Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, was passed by Parliament after lengthy debates and got the President's approval on April 5. No material to indicate votes cast in name of dead people in Dhule LS seat: HC

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Bombay high court's Aurangabad bench has dismissed BJP leader and former minister of state for defence Subhash Bhamre's election petition that Congress nominee Shobha Bachchav's election as MP from Dhule Parliamentary Constituency in Nashik district in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls be set aside on the grounds of irregularities. The court allowed Bachchav's application in the same matter seeking dismissal of Bhamre's election petition. Bhamre polled over 5.80 lakh votes as against over 5.83 lakh votes polled by Bachchav. The victory margin was over 3,800 votes. Of the six assembly segments that fall in Dhule Parliamentary Constituency, Bhamre focused his election petition on the polling in Malegaon Central segment from where he could muster only 4,542 votes as against over 1.98 votes polled by Bachchav. Bhamre contended that a large number of votes were cast in the name of dead voters, who continued to figure in the electoral roll, and multiple votes were cast in the name of same people in different booths. All these votes were cast in favour of the winning candidate, he contended. The bench of Justice Arun Pednekar, however, held on June 13 that there was no material placed on record to indicate that votes were cast in the name of dead people. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Cardiologists: 1 Teaspoon of This Before Bed Melts Belly Fat Like Crazy Hollywood News | USA Click Here Undo Similarly, there was no material to substantiate the allegation of multiple votes cast in the name of same people. "By merely having names of dead people on the electoral roll this court will not presume that votes are cast in their names. The polling agents in the booth are aware of the votes cast by people and an affidavit of polling agents present in the polling station stating that votes are cast against dead persons would at least indicate that voting has taken place against the name of dead persons," the bench said while pointing out that there was no affidavit by polling agents that they have noticed votes being cast in the name of dead people or that the polling agent had raised objection to the casting of votes in the name of dead people. The bench cited provisions under the Conduct of Elections Rules, 1961 relating to appointment of polling agents and safeguards against impersonation, and ruled, "Presently, there is no material before the court to indicate that large number of persons have cast votes against the names of dead people so as to materially affect the election and this court would not enter into inquiry of the same." "In the election petition, the pleadings have to be precise, specific and unambiguous. If the allegations contained in Election Petition do not set out grounds as contemplated in Section 100 and do not conform to the requirement of Section 81 and 83 of the Act, the Election Petition is liable to be rejected Under Order VII, Rule 11 of Code of Civil Procedure," the bench held.

BCC discusses action against Tilakwadi Club and Vega Funmobile

Belagavi: Heated discussions marked the Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) council meeting on Tuesday, as several corporators accused BCC officials — including the law officer — of indirectly helping the management of Tilakwadi Club, which is under fire for violating lease terms. Deputy commissioner (Revenue) Reshma Talikoti, informed the council that the club breached lease conditions by operating a bar, restaurant, and other commercial activities, which were not permitted. As a result, the commissioner's court ordered the cancellation of the lease in May. A caveat related to the case was also filed in court. Talikoti explained that as per the Karnataka Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorised Occupants) Act, three notices must be served before initiating eviction proceedings. The first notice period expired on June 13, and subsequent notices will follow. However, the club management obtained a court stay against the show-cause notice, temporarily halting the eviction. Corporators advocate Hanumant Kongali and Ramesh Sontakki criticised officials for failing to file a caveat before serving the show-cause notice. "At a crucial stage in the process, the officials helped the club management by issuing a notice without filing a caveat, allowing them to easily obtain a stay," alleged Kongali. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Switch to UnionBank Rewards Card UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo The law officer defended the move, stating that efforts are underway to vacate the stay in upcoming hearings. Vega Funmobile faces eviction In another key issue, ruling BJP members demanded action against Vega Funmobile Pvt Ltd for allegedly evading property tax amounting to Rs 7.3 crore. Deputy commissioner Reshma Talikoti confirmed that two notices were already served — the first with a one-month deadline and the second with a one-week notice, ending on June 18. A final 24-hour notice will be issued on Wednesday, following which seizure proceedings will be initiated. Belagavi (North) MLA Asif Sait suggested exploring a one-time settlement with the company, but officials responded that such an option was no longer available under current rules. Elon Musk's X takes New York to court, calls hate speech law unconstitutional

Elon Musk's X Corp sued New York on Tuesday, challenging the constitutionality of a state law requiring social media companies to disclose how they monitor hate speech, extremism, disinformation, harassment and foreign political interference.X said the law known as the Stop Hiding Hate Act violated the First Amendment and state constitution by subjecting it to lawsuits and heavy fines unless it disclosed "highly sensitive and controversial speech" that New York may find what content is acceptable on social media platforms "engenders considerable debate among reasonable people about where to draw the correct proverbial line," X said. "This is not a role that the government may play." The complaint filed in Manhattan federal court also quoted a letter from two legislators who sponsored the law, which said X and Musk in particular had a "disturbing record" on content moderation "that threatens the foundations of our democracy."New York Attorney General Letitia James, a Democrat who enforces the state's laws, is the named defendant in X's lawsuit. Her office did not immediately respond to requests for the world's richest person and recently a close adviser to Republican President Donald Trump, has described himself as a free speech did away with the content moderation policy of Twitter, as X was previously known, after he bought the company for USD 44 billion in October York's law requires social media companies to disclose steps they take to eliminate hate on their platforms, and to report their progress. Civil fines could reach USD 15,000 per violation per law was written by state Senator Brad Hoylman-Sigal and Assemblymember Grace Lee, both Democrats, with help from the Anti-Defamation League. It was signed in December by Governor Kathy Hochul, also a Democrat.X said New York based its law on a nearly identical 2023 California law whose enforcement was partially blocked by a federal appeals court last September because of free speech agreed in a February settlement with X not to enforce the law's disclosure requirements.A spokesman for Hoylman-Sigal had no immediate comment.
