Melbourne Victory knocked out of Australia Cup by a club from NPL WA

Former A-League midfielder Mitch Oxborrow has praised the attitude of his Olympic Kingsway team after the NPL West Australian outfit stunned the nation's 'biggest club', Melbourne Victory, in an Australia Cup boilover.
Kingsway shocked the A-League heavyweights and two-time Cup winners with a 4-3 extra-time round-of-32 victory at Kingsway Reserve on Tuesday night.
Oxborrow, Kingsway's 30-year-old skipper who had A-League stints with Perth Glory and Brisbane Roar, said it was the 'biggest night' in his club's history.
'This is what the club's all about,' he said.
'The attitude of the boys was superb, We had a chance. Everyone underestimates us, but we've got that mongrel, and it means a lot.
'They (the Victory) are the biggest club in Australia for me, and to beat them, it'll go down … as the biggest night in this club's history, for sure.'
The Victory was reduced to 10 men in the 78th minute when substitute Joshua Rawlins was sent off, but the four-time A-League champions seemed destined to progress to the round of 16 when another replacement, Reno Piscopo, scored 10 minutes later to give the visitors a 3-2 lead.
However, Kingsway substitute Liam Boland equalised in stoppage time to send the contest into extra time.
Boland then completed the fairytale when he scored from the penalty spot in the 101st minute
after the Victory's Keegan Jelacic fouled Kingsway's Laat Mathiang.
'Staying in the game was a priority for us,' Oxborrow said.
'They're only three weeks into pre-season, and we've played 18-19 games, so that was going to come into factor.
'They had a red card but I feel we overran them in general anyway.'
Fans streamed on to the ground after the final whistle to celebrate the home side's win.
'I'm just so proud of the club and so proud of the boys,' Oxborrow said.
In Tuesday night's other round-of-32 results, Cup holder Macarthur FC thrashed Southern District Raiders 5-0, Auckland FC beat Gold Coast Knights 4-0, and Sydney FC defeated fellow A-League club Western United 1-0.

Contract shock: Newcastle star set for huge overseas move

Newcastle-born striker Archie Goodwin appears set for a rich overseas move. The Newcastle Herald understands the 20-year-old has travelled to the United States and will join Charlotte FC. Goodwin's current club Adelaide have been in negotiations with the Major League Soccer club. After Adelaide initially rejected a six-figure transfer fee, it is understood Charlotte have come back with a $2 million offer for the A-League young gun. The 20-year-old former Newcastle Jet and Cooks Hill United Football Club junior is coming off a career-best year. Goodwin came through the Jets academy from under nines and became the A-League club's youngest debutant when deployed off the bench as a 16-year-old against Melbourne Victory in February, 2021. The Novocastrian was plagued by injuries early in his career but had a break-out campaign after joining Adelaide last season. He scored 13 goals in 26 appearances to finish the season as the A-League Golden Boot winner, an accolade Goodwin shared with Sydney striker Adrian Segecic. He was also named Young Footballer of the Year. The young sharpshooter credited a "fresh start" in Adelaide as the catalyst for a lethal season in front of goal. "I said to a lot of people when I first made the move here, I needed to get out of my comfort zone and really focus on myself," Goodwin told the Newcastle Herald in May. "I did that. I have had to learn how to do things myself. That is a big part of growing up. "The environment here, the people around me and the coaching staff, has been fantastic. It is the best I have ever felt. But I still feel there is more to go." Goodwin had another three years on his deal at Adelaide. Newcastle-born striker Archie Goodwin appears set for a rich overseas move. Will Hulbert seeks redemption in Townsville Cup after Mackay Cup disappointment

Will Hulbert was kicking stones after the unplaced run of his Mackay Cup favourite. Quite literally. Brisbane trainer Hulbert was so dark on how the race panned out, he set off on foot across some local cane fields and walked much of the way to Mackay Airport. He wasn't in much of a mood for company. Kipling's Journey, a stable stalwart who has won almost $300,000 in prizemoney, had missed the kick and was then hunted forward but was taken on and spent too many petrol tickets to be a force in the final stages of the 2000m race. But Hulbert, who co-trains with dad Peter, said Saturday's $150,000 Townsville Cup (2000m) represents a strong chance for redemption. After competing in both the Rockhampton and Mackay Cups, and giving the Townsville Cup a crack on Saturday, it is likely Kipling's Journey will keep winding his way north for a Cairns Cup mission later this month. But first things first. 'After the Mackay Cup, I didn't want to see anyone and the surcharges on Ubers were through the roof, so I just started walking towards the airport,' Hulbert said. 'I walked through a sugar cane field, felt my hamstring tightening up and arrived at the airport with my phone about to die which wasn't ideal as it had my plane ticket on it. 'Hopefully Townsville is a better experience on Saturday. 'The horse pulled up well from his run in Mackay and he had a good gallop on Monday morning. 'We finished fourth in Rocky and fifth in Mackay so hopefully he will win the next two ones in Townsville and Cairns.' Ahead of the Townsville Cup, Hulbert is adamant he wants jockey Adin Thompson to seek cover on Kipling's Journey. He insists he doesn't have to lead. 'Over shorter trips he leads, but once he is up to this sort of trip he needs to be ridden with cover,' Hulbert said. 'To be honest, if the horse relaxed a bit better I think he would run even further than this.' Kipling's Journey has drawn barrier nine in the Townsville Cup field which will have 16 starters.

Killjoys or fair play? Why Sydney FC is threatening to sack a coach

The best-case scenario is that by blocking Ante Juric from coaching against them, Sydney FC are secretly engaging in a publicity stunt - conducted with the full cooperation of Sydney United 58 - to pump up interest in their Australia Cup round of 16 clash. The worst-case scenario is that the Sky Blues are being needlessly churlish in denying Juric, who coaches Sydney's women in the summer and Sydney United's men in the winter, the chance to be on the sidelines for a clash between his boyhood club and his main employers. The truth, as always, is somewhere in the middle. Though there is nothing confected about the spat that has erupted between the A-League side and their NSW NPL counterparts, it should be no surprise to Sydney United that Juric won't be allowed to take part in Sunday's match at Edensor Park - the clear highlight of the round in the Australia Cup. On Wednesday, it emerged that Sydney FC was stepping in to stop Juric from coaching against them - something that Mark Ivancic, the Sydney United 58 president, argued was unfair on the club and on Juric, who has been threatened with the sack if he is involved in the match. Ivancic cited the cup meeting four years ago between the Sky Blues and Sydney Olympic, the NPL side Juric was coaching at the time. On that occasion, Juric - who has headed up Sydney's part-time A-League Women program since 2017, while juggling other roles in football between seasons - was allowed to coach, and nobody batted an eyelid. 'They didn't have any objection then,' Ivancic said. 'I think they had better leadership back then. The leadership they've got now is more about their own egos. 'Why was he allowed before? It's because they saw it for what it is: it's football. Let it play out on the field. Let it go. There's no big deal. We're an NPL club. They're the biggest professional club in the country and they're worried about their women's coach sitting on the bench and coaching his team against their A-League team of professionals? Come on, mate.'
