Mashreq, a leading financial institution in the MENA region, has structured the first Sustainability-Linked Financing (SLF) for Galadari Brothers, a UAE-based leading conglomerate, marking a significant step in advancing their sustainability journey. As one of the UAE's most diversified and longstanding business groups – with operations spanning media, heavy equipment, food and beverage, motors, engineering, projects, facility management, sports, travel and hospitality, real estate, and other ventures – Galadari Brothers is accelerating its commitment to a robust sustainability strategy, further engaging stakeholders through clear KPIs and ambitious targets.Structured under Mashreq's bilateral lending relationship with the group, this transaction represents one of the largest bilateral SLF deals for a local UAE conglomerate till date. The SLF introduces performance-based pricing linked to three core Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) centered around resource efficiency, circular economy and internal capacity building and institutional alignment with ESG principles. The financing builds on the group's inaugural green loan previously extended by Mashreq in 2023 to support energy-efficiency retrofits at Galadari's flagship hotel in Sri Lanka.Joel Van Dusen, Group Head of Corporate & Investment Banking, at Mashreq said: 'This transaction with Galadari Brothers, a name synonymous with industrial and commercial growth in the UAE, demonstrates how sustainability can be embedded into core financing structures. As long-term partners, we are proud to support the group's Sustainability ambitions and to play a catalytic role in the region's transition toward more responsible capital markets. Sustainability-linked finance is the future of corporate lending, and we are committed to helping clients lead from the front.'Faisal AL Shimmari, Head of ESG and Corporate Strategy at Mashreq, commented: 'This deal is a clear example of how sustainability-linked finance can be applied across complex, multi-sector businesses—not just to drive environmental outcomes, but to empower people and communities. As one of Mashreq's largest bilateral transactions to date, it reflects a broader shift in the region, where more companies are aligning financing with their ESG ambitions in ways that directly impact lives. This SLF with Galadari Brothers builds on Mashreq's commitment to helping clients achieve measurable ESG outcomes that support both national priorities and global sustainability goals. By embedding human-centricity into our financial instruments—through inclusive KPIs, transparent governance, and stakeholder engagement—we ensure that sustainability is not just about metrics, but about meaningful progress for individuals, families, and society at large.'Mohammed Galadari, Co-Chairman and Group CEO of Galadari Brothers, said: 'This milestone Sustainability-Linked Financing deal marks an important step forward in our ongoing efforts to integrate environmental, social, and governance principles across all areas of our business. As we continue to grow and diversify, aligning our financial strategy with clear ESG goals is both a business priority and a reflection of the values we stand for. Our partnership with Mashreq reinforces our commitment to building a more sustainable future for our businesses, our people, and the communities we serve, while also supporting the UAE's broader vision for responsible and inclusive growth.'R V Ramanan, Group Chief Financial Officer of Galadari Brothers, said: 'This landmark transaction with Mashreq marks a significant step in aligning the Group's financing strategy with our ESG ambitions. It reflects our vision to progressively transition toward a fully green and sustainability-linked model. More than just a transaction, it reinforces our long-term commitment to responsible growth—integrating sustainability into the core of how we fund our expansion across sectors and regions.'
This transaction supports Mashreq's broader sustainable finance strategy and contributes to its goal of facilitating USD 30 billion in sustainable finance by 2030. The bank has played a leading role in several notable ESG transactions in the region, including the largest sustainability-linked loan in the region to date. The facility is also part of Mashreq's Climb2Change initiative, a global platform that unifies the bank's efforts in sustainable finance, responsible banking, and social impact, reinforcing its position as a leader in sustainable banking across the MENA region.

Sukna Fund provides $20 million credit facility to OCTA

UAE-based fintech Octa has raised $20 million in a credit facility from Sukna Fund for Direct Financing (SFDF). Co-founded by Jon Santillan, Andrey Korchak, and Nupur Mittal in 2024, OCTA automates financial operations for SMEs — covering invoicing, payments, collections, and now embedded credit. The new funding will accelerate OCTA's mission to become a foundational layer for contract-to-cash automation in Saudi Arabia and the wider region. In October 2024, OCTA closed a $2.25 million pre-Seed round, co-led by Quona Capital and Sadu Capital, with participation from Sukna Ventures, Plus VC, 500 Global, and other angel investors. Press release: OCTA, a UAE-based fintech platform streamlining financial operations for SMEs, has announced the closing of a $20 million credit facility from the Sukna Fund for Direct Financing (SFDF). The funding will enable OCTA to embed short-term working capital financing directly into its platform, offering seamless credit access to small and medium-sized enterprises across the Kingdom. Unlike traditional lending processes that require separate applications and banking integrations, OCTA automates financing from within businesses' existing invoicing and payments workflows. The platform empowers companies to access funds the moment invoices are issued or payables come due, eliminating the typical 60-to-90-day cash flow gap that hampers growth. 'Most SMEs don't fail because they lack revenue — they fail because their cash is locked up,' said Jon Santillan, Co-Founder and CEO of OCTA. 'Our partnership with Sukna Fund allows us to bring financing directly into the heart of daily operations, where businesses need it most.' The credit is delivered through OCTA's proprietary platform, integrating smoothly with a company's financial operations stack. Repayments are automated and tied to real-time collections or scheduled payouts, aligning funding with actual cash flow and reducing the operational burden on SMEs. 'We've built the financial operations layer that automates how money moves,' said Nupur Mittal, Co-Founder of OCTA. 'With this facility, we're now also automating how it gets funded.' Sukhdev Hansra, Head of Asset Management at Sukna Capital, added: 'OCTA gives us an embedded distribution layer where capital can move instantly, transparently, and in sync with the operations of real businesses.'

Egypt's Octane raises $5.2 million to digitize fleet payments across MENA

Egyptian fintech Octane has raised $5.2 million in a funding round led by Shorooq Partners, Algebra Ventures, and SC Holding. The Cairo-based startup, co-founded by Amr Gamal and Ziad Eladawy in 2022, provides a digital platform that consolidates all fleet-related expenses—including fuel, maintenance, and petty cash—into a single closed-loop wallet. The new funding will be used to expand Octane's regional footprint, acceptance network, and AI capabilities, including fraud detection and route optimisation. Press release: Octane, Egypt's leading digital platform for fleet and on-road expense management, has raised $5.2 million in a funding round led by Shorooq, Algebra Ventures and SC Holding. The new capital will accelerate the expansion of Octane's acceptance network, deepen its technology stack and support the company's growth across Egypt and the wider Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Unlike traditional fuel cards, Octane delivers a single closed-loop digital wallet that consolidates every on-road expense—fuel, maintenance, spare parts, petty cash and more into one platform. Real-time controls and analytics give fleet operators clear visibility, typically trimming avoidable fuel and mileage costs by double-digit percentages. The solution already supports diesel, gasoline and CNG, with EV-charging payments rolling out at pilot locations to keep pace with customers' evolving energy needs. 'At Octane, we're focused on giving fleets the rails they need to manage day-to-day payments with precision,' said Amr Gamal, Co-Founder and CEO of Octane. 'This funding lets us broaden our acceptance network, expand AI-powered fraud detection and route optimisation features, and stay ahead of the shift toward cleaner, more efficient mobility, without adding complexity for our customers.' Since its founding in September 2022, Octane has rapidly built Egypt's largest fleet-payment coverage, now spanning 2,400 petrol stations and 400 CNG outlets nationwide. More than 1,600 corporate clients with a total fleet of ~250,000 vehicles rely on the platform to streamline fleet spending, and the company's headcount has grown to 200 employees. Octane's innovative approach earned an EEA Award for Rising Entrepreneurs of the Year. 'What drew us to Octane wasn't just the size of the problem they're tackling – it was the clarity and precision of their solution,' said Laila Hassan, General Partner at Algebra Ventures. 'In a market where billions leak through inefficiencies and fraud, Octane brings real accountability and control to fleet operators. Their vision extends far beyond fuel, laying the rails for B2B transactions across Egypt's logistics and mobility sectors. We're proud to back a team that's solving today's pain points while setting the foundation for a more efficient, transparent future.' With fuel prices volatile and logistics costs rising, fleet owners need smarter expense-management tools to protect margins. 'The first wave of digitisation of mobility companies moved people; the second wave moved goods. But unlike the consumer space, the enterprise space lacked the payments and expense-management infrastructure to enable it. Octane is building that infrastructure,' said Tamer Azer, Partner at Shorooq. 'Octane is redefining financial technology and access products for fleet managers, and we're excited to support them as they scale their world-class technology to every company that operates a fleet across the MENA region.' Integrated fleet-expense platforms are gaining momentum worldwide. Established players such as Corpay and WEX prove the demand for centralised fuel and maintenance payments, while newer fintechs like Coast and Fleetio are introducing modern, digital-first tools. Octane is bringing this proven model to Egypt and the MENA region, pairing a broad local acceptance network with controls and analytics tailored to regional tax and compliance requirements, giving operators automation and insight previously available only in mature markets. With its robust network, proprietary technology and growing customer base, Octane is well poised to scale as more fleets seek data-driven solutions to control costs and improve operational efficiency.
