Maracana will move the soul at Women's World Cup, says Formiga
The celebrated Rio de Janeiro stadium is one of eight venues for the 2027 tournament, the first time Latin America is hosting the women's showpiece event, and has been the setting for some of football's most memorable matches.
Uruguay stunned Brazil at the stadium in 1950 to win their second World Cup, while Germany got their hands on the trophy in 2014 with victory over Lionel Messi's Argentina at the venue.
Pele also scored his 1,000th goal there in 1969 in a match between Santos and Vasco da Gama, and it also hosted the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2016 Olympic Games.
"A World Cup match there could be the greatest match in history," Formiga told Reuters on Wednesday after playing in a 'legends match' in Asuncion, a day before FIFA's 75th Congress.
"I hope it's true and that everyone finally has the opportunity to experience the great Maracana. We have many other great stadiums in the country, but none like it."
The Maracana also boasts the four biggest attendances in world football, with more than 150,000 fans crammed into the stadium to watch World Cup matches and qualifiers.
"The Maracana is different, it's impressive, it moves people's souls," added the 47-year-old, who played in seven World Cups and seven Olympic Games for Brazil.

Who are the other men's contenders to look out for at the US Open?
The following are some of the other contenders for the men's singles title at the U.S. Open, which begins on Sunday: ALEXANDER ZVEREV (GERMANY) Ranking: 3 Alexander Zverev showed flashes of his best to reach the Australian Open final at the start of the year, but suffered a shock defeat to Arthur Rinderknech in the opening round of Wimbledon, after which he told reporters he felt "empty" and was considering therapy. He has since enjoyed a promising run in the North American hardcourt swing and will be desperate to finally end his Grand Slam duck with victory at the U.S. Open. The German reached the semi-finals of both ATP 1000 tournaments held this month, losing in three sets to Karen Khachanov in Toronto and then battling dizziness in his defeat by Carlos Alcaraz in Cincinnati. TAYLOR FRITZ (UNITED STATES) Ranking: 4 Fritz is looking to go one better than last year after falling to Jannik Sinner in the final but the American has struggled under pressure on a few occasions over the past few weeks. He was beaten in the quarter-finals in Washington by Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, lost to compatriot Ben Shelton in the Toronto semi-finals and then suffered a shock defeat by qualifier Terence Atmane in Cincinnati. The 27-year-old must fully exploit his devastating serve if he hopes to become the first American man to win a major since Andy Roddick in 2003. JACK DRAPER (BRITAIN) Ranking: 5 When Jack Draper suffered a semi-final defeat by eventual champion Sinner in New York last year, he was ranked 25th in the world. The Briton has since gone from strength to strength on the tour and claimed the biggest title of his career at Indian Wells, while also reaching the final in Madrid, during a strong 2025 campaign. However, the past few months have not been easy on the 23-year-old. Faced with the immense burden of shouldering home hopes at Wimbledon, he lost in second round to Marin Cilic and has not played a singles match since due to an arm injury, likely leaving him slightly undercooked for the year's final Grand Slam. ALEX DE MINAUR (AUSTRALIA) Ranking: 8 Alex de Minaur has not had the most consistent season and has twice been bumped out of the top 10, but the Australian put in a heroic display in last month's Washington Open final, saving three match points to claim his first title of the year. He has a tour-leading 24 wins on hard courts this year and should get through the early rounds at Flushing Meadows easily enough. He has never gone past the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam though, and has a woeful 0-6 record against fellow top-10 players this year. FRANCES TIAFOE (UNITED STATES) Ranking: 17 Little has gone right for Frances Tiafoe in the past few months. The American was knocked out in the second round of Wimbledon before failing to string together more than a couple of wins in both DC and Toronto. He suffered another setback in his preparations for the U.S. Open during his fourth-round match against Holger Rune in Cincinnati when he was forced to retire due to a lower back injury.

Fluminense keeper Fabio surpasses Shilton's record with 1,391st competitive appearance
Fluminense goalkeeper Fabio overtook Englishman Peter Shilton's longstanding record for the most competitive appearances in men's soccer, playing his 1,391st match during his side's 2-0 victory over America de Cali on Tuesday, his club said. The 44-year-old Brazilian has enjoyed a professional career spanning 28 years, with senior appearances for Uniao Bandeirante (30 matches), Vasco da Gama (150), Cruzeiro (976) and Fluminense (235). He made the switch from Cruzeiro to Fluminense in 2022 and has since won the Recopa Sudamericana and Copa Libertadores one each, alongside two Taca Guanabara and two Campeonato Carioca titles. "I have every reason to thank God for allowing me to experience this special moment and achieve this tremendous milestone. It was very emotional to experience this, especially with my family by my side during the tributes," Fabio said in a statement posted by Fluminense. "It is a great satisfaction to achieve this record wearing the Fluminense jersey, which opened doors for me." Fluminense celebrated Fabio's record with a tribute at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro following their win over America in the second leg of the Copa Sudamericana last 16 tie. "Now it's time to keep playing and striving for new achievements in every game," he added. Former England goalkeeper Shilton, who played between 1966 and 1997, was acknowledged as the record holder for the most competitive men's professional games, though the total is disputed. Guinness World Records and a number of statistics websites say the tally is 1,390 but Shilton himself, on his X feed, gives it as 1,387. The discrepancy comes from Guinness including 16 unofficial games that Shilton does not include, while he includes 13 games he played for England's Under-23s team that normally are not counted.

Creators of hit video game Black Myth: Wukong announce sequel featuring legendary ghost slayer Zhong Kui
BEIJING: The creators of Black Myth: Wukong, the action role-playing video game that took the gaming world by storm and stamped China's mark on global game development, have announced a new entry in the series that has once again sparked excitement among fans. Chinese studio Game Science introduced Black Myth: Zhong Kui at the Gamescom conference in Cologne, Germany on Tuesday (Aug 19). A near-two-minute teaser trailer featured the titular character Zhong Kui, a deity in Chinese mythology traditionally regarded as a vanquisher of ghosts and evil beings. He is often portrayed as a towering figure with a big black beard, bulging eyes and a wrathful expression. Beyond confirming that the game is in early development and will similarly be steeped in Chinese mythology like Black Myth: Wukong, Tencent-backed Game Science has yet to release any gameplay footage or even a rough release date. The studio said on its website that it is the company's 'tradition' to report its progress to players every Aug 20, and that 'this year is no exception'. While the announcement took place on the evening of Aug 19 in Cologne, it was already Aug 20 in China, aligning with the studio's chosen date. Game Science has traditionally released new content or teasers for the Black Myth series on Aug 20 each year. In 2020, it unveiled a 13-minute gameplay trailer for Black Myth: Wukong, followed by additional gameplay footage and an in-game cutscene in subsequent years. The game was officially released on Aug 20, 2024. However, the game is 'little more than an empty folder at this stage', said Game Science, adding that it was 'not even done with the outline yet'. 'There's hardly any game footage we could share. To keep all hands focused on development, we decided to deliver a CG (computer graphics) short to let everyone know that a new project has kicked off,' the studio wrote in an FAQ section on its website. Black Myth: Zhong Kui will be released on PC and all 'mainstream' console platforms, Game Science said. SPIRITS STIRRED, FANS THRILLED Game Science uploaded the teaser to its official social media platforms, including Chinese microblogging site Weibo, where it quickly drew an enthusiastic response. The hashtag 'Black Myth' surged to the top of Weibo's hot search list, racking up nearly 18 million concurrent views as fans expressed excitement over the upcoming sequel. A popular Chinese gaming blogger, Zhang Jia, who has more than 1 million followers on Weibo, shared clips of non-Chinese gamers reacting to the announcement of Black Myth: Zhong Kui. "The hype … is real, the foreigners are going crazy when they showed Black Myth: Zhong Kui on the big screen,' he wrote. But Zhang believes Zhong Kui's mythology may be "more difficult" for non-Chinese players to digest compared to Journey to the West, the classic Chinese epic that inspired Black Myth: Wukong and is more widely known internationally. Black Myth: Wukong follows the Journey to the West character known as the Monkey King or Sun Wukong, as he embarks on a quest to reclaim six magical relics. Game Science has said it's still 'exploring and experimenting' with the 'concrete differences' between Wukong and Zhong Kui. 'So take it easy, let us impress ourselves first before we serve it to you,' it wrote on its website. Even as anticipation builds, it remains to be seen whether Black Myth: Zhong Kui can replicate the success reaped by its predecessor. Black Myth: Wukong saw more than 4 million people add the title to their wishlists on Steam before its launch, making it the most 'wishlisted' game on the digital platform in early 2024. Physical editions were also sold out within seconds on Chinese e-commerce platform The game reached more than 2.2 million peak concurrent users (PCCU) on Steam within its first 24 hours, making it the most popular single-player game by that metric in the platform's history, according to video game research firm Niko Partners. It ranks second among all types of games by PCCU, coming in just behind battle royale game PUBG which peaked at 3.2 million.
