Giants Edge Rush Dominates, Offense Struggles Without Malik Nabers in Joint Practices vs. Jets
The New York Giants and New York Jets held joint practices on Tuesday and Wednesday ahead of their annual preseason matchup on Saturday at MetLife Stadium. The two practices allowed both teams to work on game situations in a controlled environment that they wouldn't get in a preseason game. 'I thought we started off fast in seven-on-seven, and I thought the first period there, we had a couple plays that we'd like to have back that you can learn from,' said Giants head coach Brian Daboll. 'I thought there was some good, and I thought there were some things we could correct. I thought that on the defensive side, I thought that in the kicking game. It was a good practice. We got a lot out of it.' It's unknown at this time how many starters will play on Saturday, but here are three takeaways from the joint practice sessions. Giants edge rushers got better of Jets offensive line What stood out most during the joint practices was that the Giants defensive line, especially their edge rushers, got the better of the Jets offensive line. Abdul Carter, Brian Burns, and Kayvon Thibodeaux gave the Jets line fits as they were able to blow past the tackles and get into the backfield. If this were a game situation, Big Blue would've had several sacks on Jets quarterback Justin Fields. Many believe that with the addition of Carter, who appears destined for greatness, the Giants front seven could be the best in the NFL. If they perform in the regular season the way they performed this week, those expectations will be validated. Giants offense struggled early without Malik Nabers The Giants held out star wide receiver Malik Nabers from the practice sessions due to a toe injury, and his absence was greatly felt as the offense struggled without him, particularly on Tuesday. In Tuesday's practice, Russell Wilson completed less than 50% of his passes and was sacked several times, while the offensive line committed a couple of holding penalties. Although the offense performed better at the end of practice, their early struggles were glaring and showed how valuable Nabers is to the offense. The team may have held him out for precautionary measures, but he's been dealing with lingering toe issues that have kept him out of practice before. Nabers' health will be something to monitor as the season opener approaches. Deonte Banks struggled covering Garrett Wilson After being the only defensive starter to play the entire first half of the preseason game against the Buffalo Bills, Deonte Banks struggled mightily covering Jets receiver Garrett Wilson on Tuesday. At one point, Wilson caught three passes in a row against the third-year corner. Although Wilson is one of the most talented receivers in the league, the Giants took Banks with the 24th overall pick of the 2023 NFL Draft to be able to cover receivers of Wilson's caliber. Banks probably has the edge over Cor'Dale Flott to be the starting corner opposite Paulson Adebo, but that's only because Flott has missed several practice sessions with an injury. Banks did not practice on Wednesday, and you have to wonder if he'll see significant playing time again on Saturday. The corner position opposite Adebo was a concern entering camp, and it remains one of the team's biggest question marks. Five Giants Players to Watch vs. Jets: Jaxson Dart Eyes Encore, Abdul Carter Set to Wreak Havoc
After two joint practices this week, the New York Giants and New York Jets will battle Saturday night for MetLife Stadium bragging rights. Both teams were victorious in their preseason openers last week, as the Giants defeated the Buffalo Bills 34-25 and the Jets beat the Green Bay Packers 30-10. It's unknown at this time how many Giants starters will play on Saturday, but on Thursday, head coach Brian Daboll was asked if having the two joint practices would affect who will play. 'I wouldn't say it affects it. Again, we'll end up making the decision we think is best,' explained Daboll. 'There's no substitute for tackling. There's no substitute for cleaning the pocket. There's no substitute for run after catch when you're going to get hit. There's no substitute for being live as a quarterback in the pocket. But we'll end up deciding at the end of the day what we think is right for our team.' Several players for Big Blue stood out against the Bills last week, and here are five to keep an eye on this week against the Jets. Jaxson Dart Jaxson Dart looked poised and confident in his debut last week, completing 12-of-19 passes for 154 yards and a touchdown. He showed accuracy and toughness on his 28-yard touchdown to Lil' Jordan Humphrey, knowing he was going to take a hit as soon as he released the ball. Dart has been as good as advertised this summer and is on track to be No. 2 on the depth chart behind Russell Wilson if he continues to perform at a high level. Now it's time to see what he can do for an encore against a team he's been practicing against all week. Abdul Carter Abdul Carter has been a disruptive force throughout training camp, and on the six plays he appeared against the Bills, he wreaked havoc. Three of those plays were passing situations, and Carter registered a quarterback pressure on each one. Everyone has given the 21-year-old edge rusher high praise as he seems on the verge of becoming one of the most impactful defensive rookies in the league. He might once again see limited time on Saturday, but it will be interesting to see how much disruption he causes. Dante 'Turbo' Miller Whenever Dante Miller gets his hands on the ball, he's electrifying to watch. It's easy to see why he earned the nickname 'Turbo' because of his explosive speed. Against Buffalo, he caught seven passes for 80 yards and carried the ball 10 times for 22 yards. With rookie Cam Skattebo still nursing a hamstring injury, Miller should see extensive playing time once again. The top three running back spots for the Giants are solidified with Tyrone Tracy Jr., Devin Singletary, and Skattebo, but it's going to be hard to keep Miller off the 53-man roster. Marcus Mbow The more you watch Marcus Mbow, the more you think the Giants got a steal by selecting him with the 154th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. The 6-foot-5, 300-pound lineman has played both tackle positions this summer and has been impressive at both. Against the Bills, Mbow was on the field for 35 pass attempts and allowed only one pressure, according to Pro Football Focus. He'll look to have another impressive outing against the Jets. Deonte Banks Deonte Banks has had an up-and-down training camp, which is probably one of the reasons he was the only defensive starter to play the entire first half last week. He also struggled at Tuesday's practice covering Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson. Banks didn't participate in Wednesday's practice, but if he plays on Saturday, it will be intriguing to see how he performs as he battles Cor'Dale Flott to be the second starting corner. Rayo Vallecano make lightning start against Girona in La Liga curtain-raiser
Girona 1-3 Rayo Vallecano After a moment of silence for Cristhian Stuani's departed father, with the Uruguayan absent as a result, the La Liga season roared into life on Friday night at Montilivi, in a match heavy with the summer heat. Either that or the occasion got to Girona goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga. The game began with Girona enjoying some nice spells of possession, but Gazzaniga was too comfortable one the ball, and scuffed a pass out wide. The loose ball in the box was hunted down by Jorge de Frutos, and his sliding effort finished with a ball and a red-faced Argentine in the back of the net. It was de Frutos again that wreaked havoc in the Girona defence moments later, as he latched onto a ball over the top. Shrugging off Ladislav Krejci, de Frutos got into the box and unselfishly found Alvaro Garcia for a tap-in. That was regrettable defending, but at least de Frutos was made to work for it. Girona manager Michel will be even less forgiving of Gazzaniga's red card though, after a failed take-on against de Frutos led to him bringing down the Rayo forward and giving away a penalty. Isi Palazon stepped up, but it was de Frutos' aggression and hunger that was paying dividends. Only a big save from replacement 'keeper Vladyslav Krapyvstov in a one-on-one with Pathe Ciss, and a foul from de Frutos on the Ukrainian kept it at four – the only saving grace for a team whistled off at half-time. Girona find pride in second period Image via Rayo Vallecano There was very much an air of 'job done' in Rayo's second half, with debutant Luiz Felipe taken off due to a yellow card. They dominated the ball, as Girona battled for pride and to relieve themselves of the Montilivi ire. Which was settled significantly by Viktor Tysgankov's brilliant run down the right, burning Rayo's central defender to get into the box, and pulling it back behind the covering defence for Joel Roca to rifle home. Roca battled hard and was brave on the ball, as was the case for Thomas Lemar when he came on for his debut. Later Vitor Reis and Hugo Rincon would do the same. Despite a ten-minute period where Girona looked like making a game of it, Rayo saw out the game on the beak, and somehow failing to add to their total. Michel will feel that he is closer to the side that finished last season than started it, but the temptation will be to completely ignore the first half after such glaring errors. Meanwhile Rayo go into next week's Conference League qualifier with Neman Grodno high on confidence. Their performance off the ball will be the most pleasing aspect for Inigo Perez, although Jorge de Frutos' continued success as a striker is also extremely promising.
