WESTONARIA : Rescuers yesterday pulled out all 260 mine workers who had been stuck for more than 24 hours in an underground shaft in South Africa, the mine's operator said.
The miners were trapped underground on Thursday at the Kloof gold mine, 60km west of Johannesburg, after a hoist used to access the shaft was damaged in an accident, the mining company Sibanye-Stillwater said.
The first phase of the rescue brought 79 people to the surface by 1.30pm while the rest were rescued six hours later, it said in a statement.
'At no point was there any risk of injury to employees during the incident,' it said.
A decision had been made against using the emergency escape routes which would have involved the miners walking longer distances, it added.
The gold mine is one of the deepest operated by the Johannesburg Stock Exchange-listed company.
Desperate relatives of the miners waited outside the site during the rescue efforts, most of them expressing shock at the incident, local television footage showed.
'All affected employees will also undergo thorough medical examinations, if required, while support has also been extended to employees' families,' the mining company said.
The National Union of Mineworkers said the incident happened around 10am on Thursday.
It expressed concern for the miners who had been 'underground for almost 20 hours'.
Sibanye-Stillwater had said earlier that the miners would be brought to the surface around midday yesterday.
'The employees are not trapped; it was decided to keep them at the sub-shaft station for now,' spokesman Henrika Ninham said.
Mining employs hundreds of thousands of people in South Africa, which is the biggest exporter of platinum and a major exporter of gold, diamonds, coal and other raw materials.
But accidents are common.
Dozens of mine workers are killed each year, though the numbers have been falling as safety standards have been stepped up over the past two decades.
According to industry group Minerals Council South Africa, 42 miners died in 2024, compared to 55 the previous year.
Sibanye-Stillwater chief executive Neal Froneman said yesterday they would not resume operations 'until we are confident that all the necessary remedial actions have been implemented'.

Mother elephant refuses to leave trapped calf at Kemaman plantation as Perhilitan conducts rescue; pair safely returns to forest

KUALA LUMPUR, June 8 — The Terengganu Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) rescued a wild elephant calf caught in a rope snare at an oil palm plantation near Felda Neram II, Kemaman last Thursday. State Perhilitan director Loo Kean Seong said they received information about the incident at around 2.30pm before deploying six personnel to the scene. 'Upon arrival, we found a young elephant caught in a cow rope snare around its leg, with five adult elephants nearby,' he said, as reported by Utusan Malaysia. 'Perhilitan officers sedated the female elephant believed to be the calf's mother and drove the others away before cutting the rope,' he said. Loo said the calf did not suffer serious injuries and was found to be in stable condition. The mother was later given an antidote to reverse the sedative and safely rejoined her herd. A video of the incident, which has gone viral, showed the mother elephant refusing to leave her calf's side, even as the other elephants moved away. According to Sinar Harian, the snare was believed to have been set up by cattle farmers who use the plantation as a grazing area. 'There were reports of wild elephants disturbing the plantation that morning, and workers had tried to drive them out,' Loo said. 'It is likely the calf was separated and became trapped while trying to return to the forest,' he added.

Another motorcycle, trailing behind, was unable to avoid the collision and crashed into the first bike. 'In the crash, two motorcyclists and one pillion rider died at the scene, while another individual was injured. The car's driver and passengers were unharmed,' she said. She said that the bodies of the three victims, all 19, were sent to the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital (HSB) for post-mortem. 'The injured victim was sent to the same hospital for treatment. The driver of the car has been detained for further investigation, and the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. 'Police urge anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward and provide information at the Kota Setar Traffic Police Station or contact Investigating Officer Insp Mohd Lukmanul Hakim Mohd Fauzi at 04-7321222 or 013-9964614,' she said. Meanwhile, a classmate of the victims, Nik Muhammad Hanif Darwis Abdul Qayyum, 19, said the trio were returning to their respective hometowns for Hari Raya Aidiladha on Saturday. 'We woke up at 7 am and got ready for class at 8.30 am. Classes ended early today at 12.30 pm so students could return home earlier. They left around 1.30 pm. I shook hands and reminded Muhamad Arif Aifan to ride safely, and he just smiled without saying anything,' he told reporters when met at HSB's Forensic Department today. He only found out about the accident later after receiving messages from friends via WhatsApp. — Bernama
