76ers' Daryl Morey Thinks Los Angeles Lakers' 2020 NBA Title is Not 'Genuine'
Well, those fans who won't give the Lakers credit could be backed up by an NBA executive. Philadelphia 76ers president of basketball operations, Daryl Morey, told the Athletic that people around the league privately agree the championship isn't genuine.
"Yet, everyone I speak to around the league privately agrees that it doesn't truly hold up as a genuine championship," said Morey. "Perhaps the lasting legacy of the NBA bubble is that the NBA should be proud of its leadership at both the beginning and end of the pandemic, even though the champion will forever be marked by an asterisk."
While some fans might agree, Morey might not be the best messenger for this take on championships due to his teams never winning an NBA title or even just reaching the Finals.
In 2006, Morey took over as assistant general manager for the Houston Rockets. He was promoted a year later to general manager. The Rockets reached the playoffs multiple times but could never get to the Finals. Morey did win Executive of the Year in the 2017-2018 season, though.
Now he serves as the President of Basketball Operations for the 76ers, who haven't reached the conference finals since he got there in 2020.
Others interviewed by the Athletic disagreed with Morey and, even said that the time in the bubble was one of the most difficult, and that title run by the Lakers should never have an asterisk beside it.
Not only just a hard time for the world, not knowing what's next, but for players and everyone in the NBA as well.
Players and coaches couldn't go home to family, were isolated in a hotel room, underwent daily COVID-19 testing and could only leave their rooms to play basketball. No fans in the stands to give teams a home-court advantage: nothing but basketball.
The Lakers defeated the Miami Heat, 4-2, in the 2020 "bubble" Finals. This title marked their 17th championship and James' fourth.

Boston Celtics sign coach Joe Mazzulla to multi-year contract extension

Mazzulla was thrust into a tough spot when he took the job, replacing the suspended Ime Udoka first as the interim head coach, just days before training camp opened in 2022. Despite that, he has thrived in the role. Mazzulla led the Boston Celtics to an NBA title in 2024 and has had them at the highest levels of the sport since he took over. That earns a coach some extra years. "We are very excited that Joe has agreed to extend with the Celtics," Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens said in a statement. "He understands the job and has a passion for the Celtics that is only rivaled by our most die-hard fans. He's worked hard and accomplished amazing things in his first three years as a head coach — including averaging over 60 wins per season and winning the 2024 NBA Championship. Joe is a gifted leader who brings a consistent commitment to learning, improving, and maximizing each day we get to compete for the Boston Celtics." The extension ends the speculation in Boston about his contract heading into a season where Mazzulla is likely to hear more criticism from fans and media than in the past. This is going to be a gap year for the Celtics, who will not be a bad team, led by Jaylen Brown, but will not be title contenders without Jayson Tatum (torn Achilles expected to keep him out most, if not all, of next season) as well as trading away Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis. This is no longer a deep team, it looks more like a play-in team, even in a down Eastern Conference. The Celtics have a "no ceiling" mindset heading into this season, with the focus clearly on saving money now and then reloading for another title run in the 2026-27 season with a healthy Tatum. We now know that Mazzulla will be coaching that team as they try to get back to the mountain top.

Nets' Egor Dёmin pointed to the draft for inspiration behind jersey number choice
After wearing No. 3 as a freshman in college, rookie guard Egor Dёmin will begin his career in the NBA with the Brooklyn Nets with a new look on the court. Before becoming the first five-star recruit to commit to BYU, Dёmin donned No. 9 with Real Madrid and No. 3 with Russia in the 2021 FIBA U16 European Challengers. With both numbers open on the Nets, Dёmin opted to go with No. 8. The 19-year-old hasn't had the opportunity to wear it throughout his basketball journey up until this point, despite it being one of his favorite numbers. In a video posted by the Nets on X, Dёmin appears to be excited to finally be able to wear it. My draft pick, I would say, is the biggest part of it. I also just really like No. 8; I always liked it. I never really had the chance to take it because I was always playing for No. 3, and it is my number all of the time. Then I played for nine because I couldn't get three, so I took three times three is nine. Then I got back to three in college. I just also think it is pretty good, and then it is infinity. Dёmin was named to the Big 12 All-Freshman Team last season, averaging 10.6 points, 5.5 assists, 3.9 rebounds and 1.2 steals on 41.2% shooting from the field. He dazzled as a playmaker, ranking third in the conference in assists after setting the freshman program record (180). The 6-foot-9 Russian debuted in the NBA Summer League, averaging 11.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, 1.3 assists and one steal on 43.5% shooting from 3-point range in three appearances. He finished in double figures twice, including a 14-point, five-rebound performance on July 16. Dёmin is among a crowded draft class for the Nets, joining Nolan Traoré (19th pick), Drake Powell (22nd pick), Ben Saraf (26th pick) and Danny Wolf (27th pick). The Nets became the first team in history to select five players in the first round of the draft.
