Model food streets coming up in four locations in Kerala

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Food Safety Department has launched the Modernisation of Food Streets project, setting up four model food streets that emphasise hygiene and aesthetics. In the first phase, projects are underway at Shankhumukham (Thiruvananthapuram), Panampilly Nagar (Ernakulam), Kottakunnu (Malappuram), and Kozhikode Beach.
Health Minister Veena George said the initiative is a model for serving quality food in clean and attractive environment. Each food street is being developed for Rs 1 crore, adhering to strict food safety standards. The outlets will be operated by staff certified under the FoSTaC programme and follow the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
Emphasis is also placed on sanitation, with provisions for toilets and waste management systems. Construction is nearing completion, with Nirmithi Kendra handling the work at Shankhumukham.
Other locations are being developed in collaboration with GCDA (Ernakulam), DTPC (Malappuram), and the Kozhikode Corporation. The initiative is being implemented under the State Food Safety Department, in coordination with district authorities and local bodies, with support from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India and the National Health Mission.

Gorakhpur has access to best of healthcare, med expense coverage: Yogi

1 2 Gorakhpur: High-end super specialty healthcare is accessible in Gorakhpur and Ayushman Bharat and Mukhyamantri Jan Arogya Yojana are ensuring coverage of medical expenses up to Rs 5 lakh. This was stated by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who inaugurated a state-of-the-art private hospital on Medical College road in the city, on Sunday. He assured citizens that if additional assistance was needed, the CM Relief Fund and contributions from legislators' funds would be extended. "Last year, Rs 1,100 crore was provided under the CM Relief Fund for medical treatment," said Yogi. He also launched the hospital's patient-care mobile app 'Regency MyCare' and inspected the newly inaugurated facilities. Yogi pointed out that just a decade ago, eastern UP's healthcare system was in a "dismal" state, BRD Medical College being the lone major hospital, struggling to provide treatment to the needy. "Today, BRD has been upgraded, AIIMS Gorakhpur is functional, and several new medical colleges have come up in districts like Basti, Deoria, Siddharthnagar, Maharajganj, Jaunpur, and others. Soon, Ballia will also have its own medical college," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 1 Reason to Read The 5 Books American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends For Turning Your Life... Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Highlighting significance of the new 250-bed multi-super specialty hospital with an 80-bed ICU, Yogi termed it a "major achievement" for eastern UP, western Bihar and even neighboring Nepal. He lauded the Regency Hospital's contribution in Kanpur and praised local partner Tanmay Modi for bringing the chain to Gorakhpur. Stressing "healthy competition" in healthcare sector, Yogi cited the model of Guru Gorakhnath Hospital, which had pioneered ICU and dialysis services in the region over two decades ago. He said new institutions must strive to deliver upgraded models of care. MP Ravi Kishan said that during SP govt in state, people were left struggling with encephalitis and BRD medical college was in a bad state but now there was AIIMS and several other hospitals in the district and around 7-8 crore population of nearby districts, Bihar and Nepal depended on Gorakhpur for healthcare. The hospital group's chairman and MD Dr Atul Kapoor said the facility would also create employment for about 900 locals. MLA Mahendra Pal Singh, MP Jagdambika Pal, mayor Dr Manglesh Srivastava and other dignitaries. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Sickle cell patients await BMT as govt scheme, centres yet to take off in Nagpur

1 2 Nagpur: At least 12 sickle cell and thalassaemia paediatric patients are now endlessly waiting for bone marrow transplants (BMT) as govt-run hospitals in the region don't have a dedicated unit for them. Two government centres have been proposed, but the lack of a financial assistance scheme has only meant that the costly BMT remains a non-starter. The tertiary care centres proposed to start a dedicated BMT centre for SCD and thalassaemia patients last year with much fanfare, but there has been little progress. Similarly, a government hospital has already started a BMT centre for other blood disorders, but a dedicated unit for SCD and thalassaemia patients is still a far cry, despite it signing an MoU for funding too. City MP and Union minister Nitin Gadkari has often slammed premier institutes for dragging their feet on starting BMT for SCD and thalassaemia patients in Nagpur. Dr Sanjay Deshmukh, in charge of state-run Daga Memorial Hospital, said they registered 12 patients after screening them for HLA (Human Leukocyte Antigen) typing tests. "Before BMT, HLA typing is a must to match a donor," he said. Daga Memorial Hospital has been facilitating the HLA test in association with Sankalp Foundation for free of cost. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Could This NEW Collagen Blend Finally Reduce Your Cellulite? The earlier the BMT is done, the higher the chances of its success. The samples are sent to Bangalore. WCL is funding Rs 12 lakh for BMT of SCD and thalassaemia patients in some hospitals, including one in Mumbai. The Maharashtra government is yet to offer any funding for sickle cell and thalassaemia patients for BMT. Other states offer Rs 15 to 20 lakh to these patients for BMT. A couple of private hospitals in Nagpur have done BMT for patients funded by their respective state governments. The CSR sponsors require at least an 8-bed dedicated unit to pledge funding. Vinky Rughwani, president, thalassaemia and Sickle Cell Society of India, said, "We will ensure that these 12 patients get BMT done in Mumbai, Ahmedabad, or Chennai at no cost till Nagpur gets a centre. We have taken the initiative to establish a dedicated BMT centre for these patients. We hope to see BMT done in Nagpur soon." Toddler survives 20-ft fall with rod in head

Lucknow: In a remarkable medical feat, King George's Medical University (KGMU) doctors saved the life of a three-year-old boy who suffered a horrific fall from a 20-foot balcony in Gomtinagar on Saturday night, with an iron railing rod lodged in his head and shoulder. The child is currently in the Paediatric ICU and is reported to be improving, doctors said. The family initially took Kartik to a private hospital, where surgery costs were estimated at over Rs 15 lakh. Unable to afford the treatment, they brought him with the rod still embedded in his body to KGMU Trauma Centre around 11:45 pm. Doctors first stabilised the patient, but the case presented several challenges. Cutting the railing was extremely difficult as it was lodged dangerously close to the skull, and repeated attempts during the night failed. The presence of the rod also made it impossible to perform a CT scan. Positioning the child on the operating table was another difficulty since the iron pierced through from one side of the head to the other. Lead surgeon Dr Ankur Bajaj said: "The situation was highly complicated. We had to first manage the embedded rod without causing further injury. Even aligning the child for surgery was a challenge." The neurosurgery team, under the supervision of Prof BK Ojha and led by Dr Bajaj with Dr Saurabh Raina, Dr Jason Golmi, and Dr Ankin Basu, carried out the operation. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo Anaesthesia specialists Dr Kushwaha and Dr Mayank Sachan, along with trauma surgeon Dr Anita Singh, provided key support. The overall arrangements for the surgery were coordinated by Dr KK Singh. After a three-and-a-half-hour procedure, the iron rod was successfully removed. Kartik remains on a ventilator in the Paediatric ICU under the care of Dr Sanjeev Verma's team. His vitals are stable and his condition is gradually improving. Kartik's father, Rajneesh, said: "Today KGMU once again proved why it is called the biggest medical centre of north India. The situation was so critical that we lost all hope, but the doctors of KGMU showed extraordinary courage and skill to save my son's life." The family described KGMU as a "temple" and the doctors as "God." Vice-Chancellor Prof Soniya Nityanand, who oversaw the case, commended the team and called the operation an outstanding example of KGMU's advanced expertise and teamwork.
