NYC flu cases rising, health officials urge precautions
NEW YORK (PIX11) – Flu cases in the city are rising.
That has public health officials reminding people to take precautions.
The city says current flu cases are higher than peaks in the past five years.

New York City Health and Hospitals executive director of NYC Care, Dr. Jonathan Jimenez, explains the symptoms of influenza.
'You get a fever, body aches, muscle pains, and a cough. But it's the fever and the malaise.'
Dr. Jimenez adds this year, the flu is peaking later in the year.
'There's a few reasons. There are different strains different years,' Jimenez added.
'One of the reasons we have seen influenza spread is cause people are indoors. We had an unusually warm fall so some people have hypothesized that's behind the delay in the peak.'
As of Jan. 25, more than 23,000 people tested positive for the flu in the city, four percent more than the week before.
So, for this season, one pediatric patient has died from an influenza-associated illness.
Dr. Jimenez says, 'It's dangerous for people who are very young or very old or in the middle with other conditions like diabetes lung disease are more at risk for severe outcomes.'
Dr. Jimenez recommends that people get the flu shot, wash their hands frequently, stay away from people if they are sick, and mask up.
Long Island resident Julia Hsia is on high alert – she's concerned about contracting the flu after she learned that Taiwanese actress Barbie Hsu just died from pneumonia, a complication of the flu.
'I am originally from Taiwan, and there's a really well-known actress that just passed from the flu, and people were like, oh ok, it's better to get the vaccine.'
That's why Hsia booked an appointment to get the flu shot tomorrow.
Nicole Lopez-Jantzen from Woodside Queens has already got the flu. She suffers from long covid.
'Every time I get even a cold, I'm out for a week. Definitely flu, COVID, RSV cold. I don't want to get any of it, so the easiest thing is to mask on the subway.'
Health and hospitals remind people they can get tested and vaccinated at a city-run facility for a low cost or free, regardless of their insurance or immigration status.

Air quality advisory due to haze in NYC region takes some by surprise
NEW YORK (PIX11) — An air quality advisory is in effect for much of the New York City region, meaning people with respiratory issues are advised to take extra precautions. The notice has taken some locals by surprise. The cause of the warning is wildfires burning in the Great Plains of Canada, which are sending smoke east and south to our region. More Local News Dr. Purvi Parikh of the Allergy Asthma Network specializes in treating respiratory conditions. She said that Wednesday's air quality is a real concern. 'For someone that has to work outdoors all day, for example,' the pulmonologist told PIX11 News. 'That prolonged exposure could even set you up for long-term problems if you already have an underlying respiratory condition, or you're elderly, or have a heart condition. 'I went running this morning,' he said, but added that he'd pay closer attention to air quality conditions going forward. The advisory did not apply when he'd gone running. It's in effect from 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Dr. Parikh said that while the advisory is for people with respiratory issues, everybody should take precautions when the air quality levels reach the triple digits. They're forecast to be at least 105 on Wednesday. The higher the number, the more potentially dangerous the air is. 'For the most part, you should be okay,' Parikh said about the general population. New York man accused of strangling, stabbing woman in front of child: DA
SUFFOLK COUNTY, N.Y. (PIX11) – A Long Island man is accused of strangling and stabbing his girlfriend in front of her child with developmental disabilities, a Long Island District Attorney announced Wednesday. 'Domestic violence causes deep and lasting harm,' said District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney. 'My office is here to stand with survivors and take strong action against abusers.' More Local News The DA did not name the accused to protect the identity of his victims. The district attorney's office said that the defendant is a 33-year-old male from Coram, N.Y.. According to a police investigation, the defendant and his girlfriend were staying in a Long Island hotel when they got into a fight in May 2025. The defendant allegedly began punching his girlfriend repeatedly in her head and body, authorities said. Throughout the assault, which lasted hours, he also stabbed the victim with a pen and strangled her with such force that he fractured a small bone in her neck, authorities said. The victim also sustained a laceration to her liver due to the abuse. The beating stopped when other guests at the hotel called the front desk to report the incident to the police. Responding officers observed severe bruising and swelling on the victim's face, leading to the defendant's arrest. The victim was taken to a local hospital to be treated for her injuries, police said. The defendant was charged with strangulation, assault, endangering a physically disabled person and endangering a child. The unnamed defendant is due back in court on July 2. Air Quality Health Advisory issued for parts of tri-state area
NEW YORK (PIX11) – An Air Quality Health Advisory has been issued for parts of New York on Wednesday due to ground-level ozone, according to the state's Department of Environmental Protection. The AQI is expected to reach 105. Sensitive groups, including young children, seniors and those with respiratory issues should avoid strenuous activities from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. More Local News Pollen levels are also expected to be medium to high throughout the day. Forecasters advise turning on the air conditioner for relief and clean air indoors throughout the day as temperatures build.
