Air quality advisory due to haze in NYC region takes some by surprise
The cause of the warning is wildfires burning in the Great Plains of Canada, which are sending smoke east and south to our region.

Dr. Purvi Parikh of the Allergy Asthma Network specializes in treating respiratory conditions. She said that Wednesday's air quality is a real concern.
'For someone that has to work outdoors all day, for example,' the pulmonologist told PIX11 News. 'That prolonged exposure could even set you up for long-term problems if you already have an underlying respiratory condition, or you're elderly, or have a heart condition.
So it's really important as much as you can, to limit exposure and protect yourself,' Dr. Parikh continued.
Various people that PIX11 News encountered on Wednesday had not heard about the advisory.

Daniel Huie was getting ready to ride a Citi Bike.
'I went running this morning,' he said, but added that he'd pay closer attention to air quality conditions going forward. The advisory did not apply when he'd gone running. It's in effect from 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.
Dr. Parikh said that while the advisory is for people with respiratory issues, everybody should take precautions when the air quality levels reach the triple digits. They're forecast to be at least 105 on Wednesday. The higher the number, the more potentially dangerous the air is.
'For the most part, you should be okay,' Parikh said about the general population. 'But anything that are non-mandatory reasons to be outside, I would still limit because why expose yourself to prolonged levels of unhealthy air?'

Citi Bike expansion plan gets pushback from Brooklyn residents
New York City's plan to add 50 Citi Bike docking stations in a Brooklyn neighborhood is frustrating some residents. The Bay Ridge community members argue the sites proposed by the Department of Transportation are overly concentrated and present safety hazards. More than a thousand Bay Ridge residents have signed a petition urging the DOT and Lyft, the parent company of Citi Bike, to reduce the number of proposed stations. Critics say many of the 50 stations are being planned too close together, directly in front of single-family homes or in locations they consider unsafe. "I had reached out to the community board. I had reached out to the councilman's office, and it very much felt like a done deal without community input. And I was frustrated by that," said Josephine Pietanza, a Bay Ridge homeowner who launched the petition. Danielle Long, a homeowner, pointed to the intersection at 78th Street and Colonial Road, where one of the new bike docks is set to go. Another is planned just one block away. "It seems like a lot," Long said. "Having them every two blocks in this neighborhood seems certainly like overkill." That intersection has also seen 31 crashes since 2009, according to Vision Zero data. The city previously removed a parking spot there to improve visibility for drivers, a safety measure known as daylighting. The DOT says a Citi Bike dock in that location would further prevent cars from even temporarily stopping there. "We still hear frequent horn beeping and cars screeching on this corner. It's still a concern, but the daylighting has helped, and so we don't want to reverse that safety improvement," Long said. Alexa Sledge, director of communications at Transportation Alternatives, argues visibility concerns may be overblown and that cyclists welcome the expansion. "It's not the same issue with Citi Bike stations because they're so much lower to the ground and it's so much easier to see around them," she said. Brooklyn Council Member Justin Brannan acknowledged the pushback from constituents, but says he's been actively involved in advocating for their concerns. "My staff and I have been going around literally visiting every single location," Brannan said. "We know better than DOT does where this stuff is going to work. And I have to say, DOT thus far has been very responsive." A DOT spokesperson said in a statement, "Bike share has become an integral part of our transportation landscape, and this expansion to Bay Ridge will bring this great service to even more New Yorkers." Still, some residents say a slower, more measured rollout would be better. "Put in 10. Monitor them. See how they're going and put them in areas where the volume of people are," said Kim Parker, another homeowner. "Here there's like six houses on each block." Citi Bike's expansion into Bay Ridge is expected to begin in the fall. Have a story idea or tip in Brooklyn? Email Hannah by CLICKING HERE.

Cat seen clinging to Brooklyn expressway saved by good Samaritans
SUNSET PARK, Brooklyn (PIX11) — A cat seen clinging to the edge of an overpass of a major expressway in Brooklyn was rescued by a group of good Samaritans on Monday night. A sequence of videos uploaded on CitizenApp showed the small gray cat, wearing a colorful collar, perched on the edge of an overpass on the Gowanus Expressway near Exit 23 at 38th Street around 8p.m. 'If there's anybody out there that's animal rescue, please come, somebody come and rescue this cat. He's going to get killed,' a person behind the camera could be heard saying. In another clip, two people were seen standing on the shoulder of the overpass, trying to coax the little cat towards them. In its likely confusion, the lost animal jumped from the overpass to the ground below but was found by a resident shortly after. The person recorded themselves as they cautiously approached the cat hiding in a corner near 39th Street in Bay Ridge. The last CitizenApp clip in the saga shows the cat safely wrapped in a shirt, in the arms of one of the people who helped save it. The woman holding the grey kitty could be heard telling a firefighter she plans to take the cat to an animal rescue for help. Social media video from the nonprofit Sunset Park Cats shows that the cat is reportedly a 3-year-old girl named Juno who was taken to the emergency veterinary center, VERG Brooklyn. Animal volunteers say Juno has since been reunited with her owner. Dominique Jack is a digital content producer from Brooklyn with more than five years of experience covering news.
