NYPD officer allegedly picked up Italian tourist from airport: sources
SOHO, Manhattan (PIX11) – Two NYPD officers are on administrative leave for allegedly working security for the cryptocurrency investors accused of kidnapping and torturing an Italian Bitcoin millionaire, sources told PIX11 News. Sources said one police officer was part of New York City Mayor Eric Adams' security detail. It's believed the 28-year-old victim may have been picked up from the airport by one of the officers and driven to the luxury SoHo townhouse where he was kept captive, according to sources. More Local News The victim was shocked with electrical wires, forced to smoke crack, cut with a saw on his leg and beaten with a gun while he was held for more than three weeks, court documents said. John Woeltz, 37, and 33-year-old William Duplessie were both arrested in connection to the kidnapping, according to authorities. Police officers are not permitted to work private security detail without approval from the NYPD. A spokesperson for Adams told PIX11 News that the mayor was unaware of what an officer on his team was doing on his personal time. More: Latest News from Around the Tri-State 'Every city employee is expected to follow the law, including our officers, both on and off duty. We are disturbed by these allegations, and as soon as it came to our attention, the officers were placed on modified duty. The investigation is ongoing,' City Hall wrote in a statement. Woeltz has been denied bail following a grand jury indictment on Thursday. Duplessie, who turned himself in, is also being held without bail and due back in court Friday morning. 2 NYPD officers on leave over ties with accused kidnappers of Italian tourist: sources
NEW YORK (PIX11) – Two NYPD officers have been placed on administrative leave due to their alleged connections to the men accused of kidnapping and torturing an Italian tourist in a cryptocurrency scheme, sources said. Sources told PIX11 News on Thursday that the two officers were moonlighting as security for one or both of the suspects. More Local News William Duplessie, 33, and John Woeltz, 37, allegedly kidnapped and tortured a 28-year-old cryptocurrency millionaire who escaped from an apartment near Prince and Mulberry streets in SoHo. Officials say the suspects wanted the password to the tourist's Bitcoin account. Duplessie and Woeltz allegedly bound and beat the victim several times, including hitting him in the head with a gun and using electric wires to shock him for three weeks in the apartment. They also used a saw to cut the man's leg, urinated on him, and forced him to smoke crack cocaine by holding him down or forcing a pipe into his mouth, according to court documents. The tourist told the defendants he would give them access to the account and ran out of the apartment when Woeltz went to get the victim's laptop, officials said. One officer allegedly acted as the victim's driver when he landed from an area airport. He then took the victim to the SoHo apartment, where he was tortured for weeks, sources said. Another officer was also on the payroll and was being paid for services, according to sources. One officer is said to be assigned to the NYPD's Elite Executive Protection Unit, which protects the mayor. Their names have not been released. The situation is under review by internal affairs, sources said. This story comprises reporting from PIX11 News reporter Mira Wassef. Matthew Euzarraga is a multimedia journalist from El Paso, Texas. 1-month-old baby found dead in Queens wasn't killed by puppy: sources
NEW YORK (PIX11) – A 1-month-old baby girl who was found dead in a Queens home on Tuesday wasn't mauled by a puppy as originally suspected, sources told PIX11 News Thursday. The infant was discovered at the Queensbridge Houses around 6:30 a.m., according to authorities. Police said she was taken to a hospital where she later died. More Local News Sources said the baby's face had been chewed on by a 6-week-old German Shepherd/pit bull mix, but that's not believed to be the cause of death. Police sources initially suspected the dog bites led to the child's death before an autopsy was done. The cause of death remained unclear. No arrests have been made and an investigation is ongoing.
