Air quality advisory due to haze in NYC region takes some by surprise
NEW YORK (PIX11) — An air quality advisory is in effect for much of the New York City region, meaning people with respiratory issues are advised to take extra precautions. The notice has taken some locals by surprise. The cause of the warning is wildfires burning in the Great Plains of Canada, which are sending smoke east and south to our region. More Local News Dr. Purvi Parikh of the Allergy Asthma Network specializes in treating respiratory conditions. She said that Wednesday's air quality is a real concern. 'For someone that has to work outdoors all day, for example,' the pulmonologist told PIX11 News. 'That prolonged exposure could even set you up for long-term problems if you already have an underlying respiratory condition, or you're elderly, or have a heart condition. So it's really important as much as you can, to limit exposure and protect yourself,' Dr. Parikh continued. Various people that PIX11 News encountered on Wednesday had not heard about the advisory. More: Latest News from Around the Tri-State Daniel Huie was getting ready to ride a Citi Bike. 'I went running this morning,' he said, but added that he'd pay closer attention to air quality conditions going forward. The advisory did not apply when he'd gone running. It's in effect from 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Dr. Parikh said that while the advisory is for people with respiratory issues, everybody should take precautions when the air quality levels reach the triple digits. They're forecast to be at least 105 on Wednesday. The higher the number, the more potentially dangerous the air is. 'For the most part, you should be okay,' Parikh said about the general population. 'But anything that are non-mandatory reasons to be outside, I would still limit because why expose yourself to prolonged levels of unhealthy air?' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. General insurance industry premium income to grow 8.7% in FY2026, 10.9% in FY2027: ICRA
Growth in the general insurance industry is estimated to pick up in FY2026 after moderating in the previous financial year, with private insurers expected to perform better compared to their public peers. The gross domestic premium income of general insurance companies is estimated to rise to Rs 3.21–3.24 lakh crore in the current financial year, up from Rs 2.97 lakh crore a year ago, according to rating agency ICRA . This translates into a growth of 8.7% in FY2026. The growth for FY2027 is estimated at 10.9%. 'GDPI growth is expected to improve in FY2026, supported by pricing discipline in commercial lines and a low base, continued growth in health, and an increase in vehicle sales vis-à-vis FY2025, partly offset by the impact of 1/n, which is expected to continue in H1 FY2026,' said Neha Parikh, vice president and sector head – financial sector ratings. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like When the Camera Clicked at the Worst Possible Time Read More Also Read: India's health insurance sector faces growth and profitability challenges: Report Parikh added that in the absence of the impact of 1/n, the growth in FY2027 is likely to further improve. Further, private insurers are expected to expand their share of GDPI to 70% by FY2027, up from 68% in FY2025. Live Events In the previous financial year, the industry's GDPI growth moderated to 6.5% YoY from 15.5% because of a slowdown in economic activity and vehicle sales, coupled with the implementation of the 1/n method of accounting, which came into effect on October 1, 2024. Public vs private According to ICRA, private insurers are projected to experience better expansion. However, the growth for public sector insurers is forecast to remain moderate due to their weak capital position. 'The underwriting performance for private insurers is likely to improve, supported by better pricing discipline. Although the combined ratio for PSU insurers is expected to improve, it will remain weak, negatively affecting their net profitability,' it said. In the case of private insurers, the combined ratio worsened in FY2025 due to the higher loss ratio for a few insurers in the motor segment and a higher expense ratio driven by 1/n regulations for long-term policies. Despite this, their profitability improved compared to the previous year due to high realised gains on equity investments. Also Read: Irdai urges insurers to cover India, not just quote stats ICRA estimates a capital requirement of Rs 152–170 billion for the three PSUs (excluding New India Assurance ) by March 2026 to maintain a 1.50x solvency ratio. This assumes 100% forbearance on the Fair Value Change Account (FVCA). 'Solvency for the three PSU insurers (excluding New India) remains weak at negative 0.85 (excluding the fair value change account or FVCA on investments) as of December 2024 in relation to the regulatory requirement of 1.50x, resulting in a sizable capital requirement. Private players, however, remain comfortably capitalised to meet the strong growth,' the rating agency said.

Contemporary challenges to peace and harmony threaten Uttarakhand, say activists
Dehradun: Social activists in Uttarakhand have raised serious concerns over the growing threats to peace and communal harmony in the state, citing changing modern landscape, rising intolerance, socio-political polarisation, and weakening democratic institutions. The concerns were voiced during the third anniversary of Insaniyat Manch – a collective of 20 social organisations working towards social justice and harmony in the region – observed in Dehradun on Sunday. Addressing the gathering, senior Supreme Court advocate Sanjay Parikh highlighted the decline in the adherence to constitutional values in the country. "Our Constitution's preamble says it all: liberty, equality, and fraternity. It does not discriminate on the basis of religion—it is the ultimate religion. However, today, we are witnessing the opposite. True patriotism is an extension of self towards others, and now selfless deeds are questioned, and so is your patriotism at every turn just for having freedom of thought," he said. Parikh also pointed to several other challenges affecting peace and harmony including increasing poverty, misuse of the money laundering act, encounter killings, trolling of judges, and questionable integrity of once independent bodies like CBI and the Election Commission of India. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Kickstart your new journey with the Honda Shine 125 Honda Learn More Undo Activists said that the once-peaceful hill state of Uttarakhand is now grappling with growing communal discord. "Uttarakhand is gradually becoming a laboratory of hatred where even women are now being targeted. From Purola to Nainital, we are seeing hatred and intolerance spread faster than ever. Women raising their voices against communal strife are threatened with rape. Minorities are regularly being targeted. Structures of historic significance like the Doon Hospital mazar are being wiped overnight," said Dr Ravi Chopra of the Uttarakhand Insaniyat Manch. Chopra emphasised that the state should instead be focusing on pressing issues like unemployment, rising drug abuse, corruption, and sustainable development. Activists called for the urgent preservation of the glaciers, forests, and for commitment in sustainable urban development.
