Air quality advisory due to haze in NYC region takes some by surprise
NEW YORK (PIX11) — An air quality advisory is in effect for much of the New York City region, meaning people with respiratory issues are advised to take extra precautions. The notice has taken some locals by surprise. The cause of the warning is wildfires burning in the Great Plains of Canada, which are sending smoke east and south to our region. More Local News Dr. Purvi Parikh of the Allergy Asthma Network specializes in treating respiratory conditions. She said that Wednesday's air quality is a real concern. 'For someone that has to work outdoors all day, for example,' the pulmonologist told PIX11 News. 'That prolonged exposure could even set you up for long-term problems if you already have an underlying respiratory condition, or you're elderly, or have a heart condition. So it's really important as much as you can, to limit exposure and protect yourself,' Dr. Parikh continued. Various people that PIX11 News encountered on Wednesday had not heard about the advisory. More: Latest News from Around the Tri-State Daniel Huie was getting ready to ride a Citi Bike. 'I went running this morning,' he said, but added that he'd pay closer attention to air quality conditions going forward. The advisory did not apply when he'd gone running. It's in effect from 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Dr. Parikh said that while the advisory is for people with respiratory issues, everybody should take precautions when the air quality levels reach the triple digits. They're forecast to be at least 105 on Wednesday. The higher the number, the more potentially dangerous the air is. 'For the most part, you should be okay,' Parikh said about the general population. 'But anything that are non-mandatory reasons to be outside, I would still limit because why expose yourself to prolonged levels of unhealthy air?' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. This Week in Jobs: Take these 24 tech career opportunities for a spin
Happy World Bicycle Day! The celebration was originated by Professor Leszek Sibilski, a Polish-American social scientist and cyclist whose academic project on bicycles and sustainability became a global initiative in the 2010s. It was declared by the United Nations in April 2018. Bicycles, invented in Germany more than 200 years ago, have stood the test of time as a simple, affordable and reliable means of transportation that is good for environmental sustainability and health. Since 2020, the popularity of bicycles, including electric bikes, has exploded. During the COVID lockdowns, when people were seeking safe outdoor activities for fitness and mental health, many cities saw record-breaking purchases and rentals — notably, the Citi Bike system in New York City saw a 67% increase during the early part of the pandemic. The popularity of bike-sharing programs didn't end with the lockdowns. In fact, their popularity continues to rise: Between March 2024 and March 2025, docked bike-share trips in major U.S. cities experienced a 17.5% increase. Riding a bike is kind of like a job search: balance, momentum and the occasional hill climb are part of the ride. How To Make an Extra $6K a Month (It's as Easy as Riding a Bike)
If you live in New York, you've probably heard of Citi Bikes. It's an immensely popular bike-sharing program by Lyft that operates throughout Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, Hoboken and Jersey City. Read More: Find Out: The official website claims it's 'the best way to get around.' Considering there are plans to expand to 36,000 bikes and more than 2,000 Citi Bike stations in 2025, this might not be that far off base. Citi Bikes is more than the area's 'official bike share program.' It's also touted as a fun — and affordable — alternative to taxis, walking, and the whole public transit system. It's accessible, convenient and, for some people, a great way to earn additional income every month. Citi Bikes might not have been intended as a side hustle, but it's certainly become that way for the dedicated few who know how to game the system. The New York Times even called it 'the perfect New York hustle, a scam of subtle perfection. The way it works is simple: Borrow a Citi Bike. Ride it a block — just one. Wait about 15 minutes. Ride it back to where you started. As for earning money, that part's a little more complicated. Citi Bike's goal is to offer seamless pickup and drop-off of its bikes — but things don't always go as planned. Sometimes, someone going to work doesn't have a place to leave their bike when they arrive. Others can't find a bike when they need one during their lunch break or have errands to run with no time to waste. Read Next: However, the program costs roughly $220 a year, and subscribers are none too happy with paying that much only to find no available bikes. That's why Citi Bike started introducing various tactics and incentives to get bikes where they're most needed. One such program, introduced in 2016, is Bike Angels. This program essentially allows Citi Biker subscribers to move bikes themselves in exchange for points. After earning enough points, they can redeem them for a variety of things — from swag to membership discounts to gift cards. Some New Yorkers — later dubbed Power Angels — got so into this that they started competing with one another to win the most points. Here are just a few ways to earn points: 4 points for taking a bike from a full station 4 points for docking a bike at an empty station 3x points for moving 4+ bikes within 24 hours Each ride can earn as many as 24 points, which translates to a maximum of $4.80 per ride (with the 3x points). Cutting ahead a few years, these 'Power Angels' discovered how to game the system, analyzing the algorithm to see where they could earn the most and maximize those financial benefits. By working together, they found a way to exploit the system — called 'station flipping' — and make some pretty good money. Here's just one account of how, back in August 2024, seven Bike Angels made money riding bikes: Each one used a special blue key (awarded by Citi Bike) to unlock a bike at a docking station. They then rode it one block, docked it, ran back to their starting point to unlock another bike, and repeated the cycle. Knowing Lyft's algorithm resets every 15 minutes (meaning new point values get awarded for each bike move), the Angels created a system in which one station would be totally full while the other (just one block away) would be empty. Viewing the empty docks as being in high-demand, the algorithm offered $4.80 per bike returned to the empty station. The riders then changed direction (each riding their bikes from the full station to the empty one), earning the maximum incentive per ride. As far as side hustles go, it's inventive, but not without its challenges. That said, one particular Bike Angel, known as Tommy, was said to have earned around $60,000 in 2023 by flipping bikes. In the early part of September, another Angel (username: NS143) earned roughly $3,800 or 19,394 points. Most don't earn nearly that much, perhaps enough to pay some bills, and taxes still have to be paid. But all in all? For those who are dedicated and willing to put in the work, it's not a bad hustle. Boy, 17, awaiting trial for attempted murder shot to death in East Harlem
A 17-year-old boy awaiting trial for attempted murder was shot in the head in East Harlem and died 11 days later, police said Thursday. Chance Leggett was shot as he rode a Citi Bike on E. 115th St. near Lexington Ave. about 5:45 p.m. May 17, cops said. Medics rushed him to Harlem Hospital, where he died Wednesday, police said. The day after Leggett was shot, police arrested 19-year-old Jermaine Vanderhorst for attempted murder and gun possession. He is being held without bail and is due back in court Tuesday, records show. Police said charges against Vanderhorst, who has several gun busts among his 12 prior arrests, may now be upgraded to murder. He lives in the Morris Heights section of the Bronx, according to cops. Leggett, who was about a mile from home when he was shot, was arrested March 27, 2024, for an attempted murder in Chelsea three weeks earlier. About 9:30 p.m. on March 6, Leggett, then 16, and an accomplice tried to push their way into an apartment in the Fulton Houses on W. 17th St. near Ninth Ave. with three people inside. When that failed, they allegedly shot at the door but nobody was struck, according to cops. Jhyrve Davis, who was 18 at the time, was arrested two days later. He lives in a different building in the Fulton Houses, according to cops. Both Leggett and Davis were charged with attempted murder, attempted assault, attempted burglary and weapon possession. Davis is still awaiting trial.

Deborra-Lee Furness 'shattered' as Sutton Foster moves into Hugh Jackman's New York penthouse, sources claim
Deborra-Lee Furness's true feelings about Sutton Foster moving into her ex-husband Hugh Jackman's New York penthouse have been revealed. Sutton, 50, is believed to be "slowly migrating" her belongings into Jackman's penthouse five months after the couple publicly confirmed their romance in January, according to New Idea on Tuesday. Jackman, 56, and Furness, 69, purchased the home in New York's Chelsea district for USD$21.12 million (AUD $30 million) in 2022, a year before he filed for divorce from her in September 2023 after 27 years of marriage. Furness is now said to be "shattered" Sutton is making a home out of the property she once shared with her ex-husband. "They're living together, they're inseparable... She's slowly migrating her things over to Hugh's place," a source said. "Deb is shattered knowing Sutton is making the penthouse her own - the place she poured her soul into." The source said Furness is also concerned Hugh is "leaping into living with someone else way too soon" and that her ex is "green" when it comes to dating. The development comes after Jackman and Sutton were spotted in New York City carrying boxes outside his penthouse earlier this month, further fuelling speculation she was moving in. Foster cut a casual figure as she left Jackman's Chelsea apartment in activewear before cycling off on a Citi Bike. Jackman later emerged from the building and carried boxes and belongings inside. The 56-year-old kept a low profile in a hoodie, baseball cap, and aviator sunglasses. While moving in together might seem like a leap after just a few months of public romance, insiders have said their connection runs deep and long. The couple first connected through the theatre scene in 2008 before starring as love interests in the Broadway revival of The Music Man in 2021. At the time, Foster was married to American screenwriter Ted Griffin, 54, and Jackman to Furness. Nevertheless, their friendship blossomed, reflected in social media posts and public interviews where they praised one another over the years. Foster then split from Griffin last October after Jackman filed for divorce from Furness. After months of speculation, Jackman and Sutton's relationship was finally confirmed when People magazine published exclusive photos of the pair holding hands on a date night in Los Angeles in January. Sources close to Furness later told the actress "had suspicions" about the pair and felt "vindicated" after the photos emerged. Jackman and Foster's relationship appears to be going from strength to strength. A source told Closer that the Wolverine star "wants to make Sutton his wife" and that they both "want to walk down the aisle" once their divorces are finalised. The division of Jackman's multimillion-dollar fortune is proving to be a sticking point in settling his split from Furness, with whom he shares children Oscar, 25, and Ava, 19, according to a source close to the actress.
