The New York Yankees are bracing for another bullpen setback as closer Luke Weaver is expected to be placed on the injured list following a hamstring injury sustained during warm-ups Sunday night, sources told ESPN insider Jeff Passan.

Weaver, who has been closing for the Yankees since April, is expected to miss four to six weeks, Passan reported.
This is a huge blow to a bullpen that was only stabalized when Weaver stepped into the closer role when Devin Williams couldn't handle it.

Williams, a two-time National League Reliever of the Year, was acquired last offseason to be the Yankees closer, but got off to a brutal start and lost the job. In his first 12 appearnaces, Williams allowed 10 earned runs over 8 1/3 innings pitched for a 11.25 ERA.
That cost him the job as the closer.
In his 15 appearances since, Williams has pitched to a 3.29 ERA. While it's not quite the dominance that he showed in Milwaukee that made the Yankees want to trade for him, it's been an improvement.

Still, Yankees manager Aaron Boone said he would rather not move Williams back just last week.
Now, he may not have a choice.
As the Yankees adjust, the return of relievers like Fernando Cruz, currently recovering from a right shoulder issue, may become even more critical in stabilizing the bullpen during Weaver's absence. Cruz has earned two saves this season as Williams struggled.
Weaver has been dominant this season in any role. He's pitched to a 1.05 ERA and racked up eight saves in 24 appearances this season.

The Aaron Rodgers era of New York Jets football is nearly indistinguishable from the history it promised to change. Rodgers was traded to an organization with the sport's longest playoff drought, no long-term prospects under center, and a history of defunct decision-makers doing their best with poor ownership. New York still doesn't have a franchise quarterback, and for all of the chaos, urgency, and optimism, it has yet to make the playoffs since 2010, when Aaron Rodgers won the Super Bowl and 2025 starter Justin Fields was 11 years old. There is no shortage of gripes to be had with Rodgers in his two-year stint. His Achilles injury obviously wasn't his fault. One such move was signing receiver Allen Lazard, a signing made before Rodgers signed but with the clear implication that he'd be recruiting him to East Rutherford. After two seasons and 841 yards, he might be on the move again. Jets fans are monitoring a potential trade after Rodgers signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers, hoping to recoup draft capital for the veteran receiver. Advertisement "Allen Lazard is a reliable veteran wide receiver. The Iowa State product has been a valuable target during his seven-year career, but could be looking for a new team soon," Bryce Lazenby wrote for Sporting News. "The reason Lazard could be on the outs in New York is because his old friend, Aaron Rodgers, finally has a new team. Lazard has always been on the same team as Rodgers, and the duo have undeniable chemistry. It's possible Lazard requests out, with his eyes set on Pittsburgh. "The Jets don't have the deepest receiver room, but they could prefer to give all of the targets to the younger guys anyway. Plus, if the team trades Lazard, it could save over $2 million." It makes more sense for New York to trade Lazard than cut him, given the dead cap they'd incur. However, the Jets might not be in a rush to move on from him. They negotiated a new contract in the offseason, taking him from an initial mark of four years and $44 million down to one year and $2.5 million. Keeping him around (or trading him to his preferred destination) would be good politics post-negotiation, and it lets him have a say in that development. He was also surprisingly efficient. In 2024, his 37 catches, 530 yards, and six touchdowns weren't all that impressive. But he managed the 13th-most expected points added per target and the 33rd-most total expected points added among receivers with at least 50 targets (per nfelo). Advertisement That's more than enough to keep around in an ancillary role, especially at his new number. Lazard reeks of Rodgers-era resource management, but there's a world in which he redefines his tenure in 2025.
