Yankees closer injury adds to bullpen challenges
The New York Yankees are bracing for another bullpen setback as closer Luke Weaver is expected to be placed on the injured list following a hamstring injury sustained during warm-ups Sunday night, sources told ESPN insider Jeff Passan.

Weaver, who has been closing for the Yankees since April, is expected to miss four to six weeks, Passan reported.
This is a huge blow to a bullpen that was only stabalized when Weaver stepped into the closer role when Devin Williams couldn't handle it.

Williams, a two-time National League Reliever of the Year, was acquired last offseason to be the Yankees closer, but got off to a brutal start and lost the job. In his first 12 appearnaces, Williams allowed 10 earned runs over 8 1/3 innings pitched for a 11.25 ERA.
That cost him the job as the closer.
In his 15 appearances since, Williams has pitched to a 3.29 ERA. While it's not quite the dominance that he showed in Milwaukee that made the Yankees want to trade for him, it's been an improvement.

Still, Yankees manager Aaron Boone said he would rather not move Williams back just last week.
Now, he may not have a choice.
As the Yankees adjust, the return of relievers like Fernando Cruz, currently recovering from a right shoulder issue, may become even more critical in stabilizing the bullpen during Weaver's absence. Cruz has earned two saves this season as Williams struggled.
Weaver has been dominant this season in any role. He's pitched to a 1.05 ERA and racked up eight saves in 24 appearances this season.

Yankees' Giancarlo Stanton is nearing a return to the outfield for the first time in nearly 2 years
NEW YORK (AP) — Giancarlo Stanton is nearing a return to the outfield for the first time in nearly two years, New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Friday. Stanton has had his playing time limited while the Yankees have used slugger Aaron Judge as the designated hitter while working his way back from a flexor tendon strain in his right elbow. Stanton was not in the lineup for the third straight game on Friday as the Yankees opened a three-game series against the AL West-leading Houston Astros. Stanton could be back in the lineup soon. 'Good chance you could see it tomorrow,' Boone said Friday. Stanton has not played the outfield since September 14, 2023, at Boston. He last appeared in the outfield at Yankee Stadium on Sept. 9, 2023, against Milwaukee. Stanton started at DH for 32 games after missing the first 70 games of the season due to inflammation in the tendons of both elbows. His only appearance since Judge returned from his injury came as a pinch-hitter in the ninth inning Tuesday, when he grounded into a double play. Stanton spent about 45 minutes Friday during batting practice fielding soft fly balls and grounders from third base coach Luis Rojas. Rojas hit fly balls to Stanton from near first and second base before finishing the session hitting fly balls from near the first base side of mound. 'He's always been a quality outfielder," Boone said. "Some range is going to be limited obviously, but I do feel like he'll make the plays that need to be made, Stanton was joined in the outfield by Judge, who began a throwing program Wednesday. Judge made soft throws from about 90 feet along with fielding fly balls and will continue building up before returning to the outfield. Since being acquired from the Marlins in Dec. 2017, Stanton has not played more than 72 games in the field and has played just 71 games as an outfielder since the start of the 2022 season. 'There's always risk when you go play the game,' Boone said. 'We wouldn't put him in a situation if we felt there was big time risk. That said, anything's possible, but I do feel like he's in a good place to do it on a limited basis and that's why we've kind of spent the week, 10 days, kind of ramping it up and seeing how he's doing with it, seeing how feels about it. 'He's usually very blunt and honest about if he feels he can do it or not. It's never risk-free, but I do feel like he should be in a position to handle it on a limited basis.' Stanton is hitting .268 with 10 homers and 28 RBIs in 37 games this season. He hit four homers in nine games during Judge's absence. Stanton has not played a full season since 2018, the first year after the Yankees acquired him from Miami. Before his season debut on June 16, he had missed 364 of 940 games since the beginning of the 2019 season. The 35-year-old appeared in 114 games last season, hitting .233 with 27 homers and 72 RBIs, then had seven homers in 14 postseason games and was voted the MVP of the AL Championship Series. Given a then-record $325 million, 13-year contract by the Marlins, Stanton had 59 homers and 132 RBIs in 2017, winning the NL MVP award. He was traded to the Yankees and had 38 homers and 100 RBIs in his first season in the Bronx. He missed time because of a strained right biceps and strained posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee (2019), strained left hamstring (2020), strained left quadriceps (2021), right ankle inflammation and left Achilles tendinitis (2022) and strained left hamstring (2023 and 2024). ___ AP MLB:

Kyle Schwarber NL MVP Odds: Can Red-Hot Phillies Slugger Catch Ohtani?
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. When we checked in on the NL and AL MVP odds in late July following the MLB All-Star Break, there wasn't much to break down in either league. In the AL, Yankees star Aaron Judge was shorter than -500 across the board, while Shohei Ohtani was even further ahead of the pack in the NL, at -1600. Though 60-plus games remained in the regular season at that point, Ohtani appeared well on his way to winning the award yet again after capturing it in 2021, 2023 and 2024. Judge's recent injury has opened the door to current MLB home run leader Cal Raleigh, who hit his league-best 42nd home run of the year on July 31. In fact, Raleigh's odds are now as short as +220 (as of August 8), as we'll detail below. National League MVP Betting Odds But for now, let's ask the question that many baseball fans have been wondering about, especially in Philadelphia in the immediate aftermath of Schwarber's two-home run night vs. the Orioles last Monday: Does Kyle Schwarber, who has hit 40 home runs in 114 games to date this year, have a chance to deny Ohtani his third straight National League MVP trophy? DK FD BetMGM Shohei Ohtani -1400 -1500 -1000 Kyle Schwarber +750 +900 +550 Unfortunately, as you can see above, the short answer right now is, "not exactly." Schwarber, it is worth noting, was available at as short as +500 at some sportsbooks earlier this week. But unfortunately for anyone hoping to see Schwarber stay on Ohtani's heels down the stretch this year, the Dodgers star racked up four total hits -- including a double and a home run -- in his team's last three games on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The promising news for Schwarber is that three of the Phillies' next four series are against playoff contenders in the Rangers (Aug. 8-10), Reds (Aug. 11-13) and Mariners (Aug. 18-20). With some fireworks in those high-profile series, Schwarber could stay within arm's reach of Ohtani as the schedule inches toward the final month of the regular season. Schwarber, who has hit 10 homers in 18 games since the break, is on pace to finish the season with 57 dingers, but at this point, it seems like he would need to get to 60 -- and top Raleigh -- to steal a significant number of votes from Ohtani. One last note on Schwarber before we turn our attention to the AL race: his 10 homers in 18 games since the break is well ahead of both Raleigh (4) and Ohtani (7). American League MVP Betting Odds DK FD BetMGM Aaron Judge -400 -410 -325 Cal Raleigh +265 +270 +220 Despite hitting just four home runs in his last 18 games since the All Star break, Raleigh's MVP campaign is getting stronger thanks to an injury that favorite Aaron Judge just returned from on August 5. In his first two games back from a right elbow flexor strain he suffered in late July, Judge filled the Yankees' DH spot and went a combined 1-for-6, with a walk and three strikeouts. As long as Raleigh keeps getting on base -- he has 15 hits since the break, including a nine-game streak with a hit from July 20-29 that included multiple 2-hit games -- the AL MVP race could get even more competitive as we get closer to September. And obviously, if Raleigh gets the long ball going again after going yard just once in his last nine games, he could absolutely beat out Judge for this award, so stay tuned to the Mariners breakout star. At the moment, it feels too soon to recommend a bet on Raleigh, but if Judge continues to show the effects of his elbow issue at the plate, a play on Raleigh could be justified sometime within the next week.
