Jason Duggar Initially Friendzoned His Now-Wife Before Realizing He 'Jumped the Gun': I Didn't 'See This Going Anywhere'
NEED TO KNOW
Jason Duggar and Maddie Grace Duggar revealed that they decided to be friends at the beginning of their relationship during an appearance on The Jinger & Jeremy Podcast on Aug. 13
The pair explained that meeting online created a disconnect in their relationship, but they quickly realized they wanted to pursue a romantic connection
They got married in October 2024, 10 months after first meeting
Jason Duggar and wife Maddie Grace Duggar's relationship started off as a slow burn.
The newlyweds, who tied the knot in October 2024, opened up about their love story during a guest appearance on the latest episode of Jeremy Vuolo and Jinger Duggar Vuolo's podcast.
Though they got married less than a year after meeting each other on Instagram, Maddie, 21, recalled wanting to take her time in the beginning — and she even shut down Jason's invitation to the family's New Year's Eve party that year.
'We messaged each other for probably a week,' Jason, 25, shared on The Jinger & Jeremy Podcast on Aug. 13. 'We FaceTimed at about the week mark.'
'And then what happened, babe?' Maddie chimed in. 'Tell them what happened after that.'
'Then I was like, 'Hey, I just see us as being friends,'" he revealed. ''Cause I was like, 'I just don't see this going anywhere. I just see us as being friends.' And really what it was is we were both, I mean you say it all the time, we were both really uncomfortable just because I felt like we couldn't be real with each other. It's like we put up a front.'

Jason explained that it was hard for them to 'feel natural' around one another.
Because they met online and were long-distance (Maddie lived 10 hours away in Tennessee while Jason was in Arkansas), the pair struggled to connect on a romantic level. Maddie also said that she didn't want her impression to be shaped by Jason's public presence.
'I was like, well, I don't want to look him up,' she added. 'I don't want to learn about him through that, but I've also seen you on the show, and I was like, I'm very different from them.'
When he proposed a friendship, Jason said Maddie agreed, but she admitted that she knew back then that she had deeper feelings for her now-husband.
'I was kind of liking you, but I also knew I couldn't be myself and you weren't being yourself, too,' she remembered. 'But instantly I was like, 'Oh, I can just be myself.' Because there's no pressure of like, 'Where's this going to go? Do I have to maintain a relationship?' So, I was just myself.'
Jason said he almost instantly regretting taking that step back.
Just a few days later, however, Maddie said Jason realized he 'made a mistake' by friendzoning her so soon.
'Jace was like, 'Hey, I think I jumped the gun. You have a lot of personality,'' she laughed. 'I was like, 'So, do you. What happened? Where'd this come from?''

His change of heart came at the perfect time, Maddie noted, because she was 'about to put a stop' to their communication.
When she thought Jason had no intentions of taking the relationship to the next level, Maddie didn't want to continue feeling confused.
'Jace was still a little flirty with me, and I was like an hour away — I was praying, I was like, 'Lord, if this guy doesn't either say something and go back on it or he doesn't stop and just really figure out how to just be friends with me, I'm going to have to say something,'' she revealed. 'And I was like, 'Lord, I don't really want to say something. That's so awkward.'"
After talking with his friend, Jason said he knew he wanted to keep Maddie in his life, and they were married less than 10 months later.
'For me, it was easy just to want to have that distance,' he reflected. 'Maybe it was some things in the past that I hadn't worked through, and I maybe took that out on you a little bit at first, but I started to realize. I think when you're honest and when you're real with each other, when you don't put up a front, then I just started to realize that it really was you that I wanted to spend my life with, get to know better."

NYT Strands Hints For Monday, August 18: Today's Spangram And Answers (If The Show Fits)
Before today's Strands hints, spangram and answers, here are Sunday's: Hey, folks! Today's NYT Strands hints, spangram and answers for Monday, August 18 are coming right up. How To Play Strands The New York Times' Strands puzzle is a play on the classic word search. It's available on the NYT website and in the NYT Games app alongside the likes of Wordle and Connections (which we also cover in daily guides at Forbes Gaming). There's a new game of Strands to play every day. The game will present you with a six by eight grid of letters. The aim is to find a group of words that have something in common, and you'll get a clue as to what that theme is. When you find a theme word, it will remain highlighted in blue. You'll also need to find a special word called a spangram. This tells you what the words have in common. The spangram links at least two sides of the board, but it may not start or end there. While the theme words will not be a proper name, the spangram can be a proper name. When you find the spangram, it will remain highlighted in yellow. Every letter is used once in one of the theme words and spangram. You can connect letters vertically, horizontally and diagonally, and it's possible to switch directions in the middle of a word. If you're playing on a touchscreen, double tap the last letter to submit your guess. If you find three valid words of at least four letters that are not part of the theme, you'll unlock the Hint button. Clicking this will highlight the letters that make up one of the theme words. Be warned: You'll need to be on your toes. Sometimes you'll need to fill the missing word(s) in a phrase. On other days, the game may revolve around synonyms or homophones. The difficulty will vary from day to day, and the puzzle creators will try to surprise you sometimes. What Is Today's Strands Hint? Scroll slowly! Just after the hint for today's Strands puzzle, I'll reveal what the first two letters for the spangram and the other words are. The official theme hint for today's Strands puzzle is... Here are the first two letters of every theme word in today's puzzle. FOOTWEAR Here's where you'll find it on the grid… What Are Today's NYT Strands Answers? Today's Strands theme words are... Here's what the completed grid looks like... Fairly straightforward one today, thanks to the theme hint. However, I got stuck when I only had the letters for ESPADRILLE left. I am not familiar with that! I'm not too ashamed to admit I used an anagram tool to figure that one out, or it would have taken me all day. Also, I think the shape of the spangram could have been more fun here. There was definitely a way to make it look like a shoe. I didn't use any hints and the spangram was the third theme word I found. See you tomorrow for more Strands fun! NYT ‘Connections' Hints For Monday, August 18: Today's Clues And Answers
Each day's game of NYT Connections goes live at midnight local time. Before we get to today's Connections hints and answers, here are Sunday's: Hey there, Connectors! Welcome to the start of a new week! I'm delighted to be back with you for another Monday-Friday run of this here column. Perhaps you know the drill by now (and if not, welcome!). I like to kick off the Monday editions of this column with a fun, upbeat song that will hopefully at least get your toes tapping and a broader smile on your face. I had two in mind for today and couldn't decide which to go with, so I figured I'd just use them both and slide the second into the daily, column-ending recommendation slot. I don't know why this got in my head, but 'I'm in the Mood for Dancing' by The Nolans is a pretty great disco song: Before we begin, we have a great little community on Discord, where we chat about NYT Connections, the rest of the NYT games and all kinds of other stuff. Everyone who has joined has been lovely. It's a fun hangout spot, and you're more than welcome to hang out with us. FEATURED | Frase ByForbes™ Unscramble The Anagram To Reveal The Phrase Pinpoint By Linkedin Guess The Category Queens By Linkedin Crown Each Region Crossclimb By Linkedin Unlock A Trivia Ladder Discord is also the best way to give me any feedback about the column, especially on the rare (or not-so-rare) occasions that I mess something up. I don't look at the comments or Twitter much. You can also read my weekend editions of this column at my new newsletter, Pastimes. Today's NYT Connections hints and answers for Monday, August 18 are coming right up. How To Play Connections Connections is a free, popular New York Times daily word game. You get a new puzzle at midnight every day. You can play on the NYT's website or Games app. You're presented with a grid of 16 words. Your task is to arrange them into four groups of four by figuring out the links between them. The groups could be things like items you can click, names for research study participants or words preceded by a body part. There's only one solution for each puzzle, and you'll need to be careful when it comes to words that might fit into more than one category. You can shuffle the words to perhaps help you see links between them. Each group is color coded. The yellow group is usually the easiest to figure out, blue and green fall in the middle, and the purple group is usually the most difficult one. The purple group often involves wordplay. Select four words you think go together and press Submit. If you make a guess and you're incorrect, you'll lose a life. If you're close to having a correct group, you might see a message telling you that you're one word away from getting it right, but you'll still need to figure out which one to swap. If you make four mistakes, it's game over. Let's make sure that doesn't happen with the help of some hints, and, if you're really struggling, today's Connections answers. As with Wordle and other similar games, it's easy to share results with your friends on social media and group chats. If you have an NYT All Access or Games subscription, you can access the publication's Connections archive. This includes every previous game of Connections, so you can go back and play any of those that you have missed. Aside from the first 60 games or so, you should be able to find our hints Google if you need them! Just click here and add the date of the game for which you need clues or the answers to the search query. What Are Today's Connections Hints? Scroll slowly! Just after the hints for each of today's Connections groups, I'll reveal what the groups are without immediately telling you which words go into them. Today's 16 words are... And the hints for today's Connections groups are: One Word For Each Connections Group Need some extra help? Be warned: we're starting to get into spoiler territory. Let's take a look at one word for each group. Today's Connections word hints are… What Are Today's Connections Groups? Today's Connections groups are... What Are Today's Connections Answers? Spoiler alert! Don't scroll any further down the page until you're ready to find out today's Connections answers. This is your final warning! Today's Connections answers are... POOL gave me pause when it came to guessing a group of CUE, SHOT, POCKET and BREAK. That made the pool/billiards-related group seem like a red herring. Sure enough, I realized that CUE went with NOD, PROMPT and SIGNAL, and that got me the yellows. The "watch" words were straightforward too. A little surprised those were the purples! My grandfather was in the Black Watch, so this felt like a nice little opportunity to tip my hat to him with the hint. Anyway, at that point the blues became clear (I wasn't kidding with that hint). The greens were evident too. I'm starting to think the NYT is going a little easy on us before tomorrow, which is game #800. I'm nervously anticipating that one. Anyway, my streak is now up to 171. Here's my grid for today: 🟨🟨🟨🟨 🟪🟪🟪🟪 🟦🟦🟦🟦 🟩🟩🟩🟩 That's all there is to it for today's Connections clues and answers. Be sure to check my blog tomorrow for hints and the solution for Tuesday's game if you need them. P.S. Y'know, I've been doing this column (or a variant of it) every day for two wonderful, life-changing years. And somehow I have yet to recommend this all-time classic. I truly hope it gets you grooving right now: Have a great day! Stay hydrated! Be kind to yourself and each other! Call someone you love! Please follow my blog for more coverage of NYT Connections and other word games, and even some video game news, insights and analysis. It helps me out a lot!
