Walmart challenges consumer perceptions with ‘Who Knew?' campaign

This story was originally published on Marketing Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Marketing Dive newsletter. Walmart has teamed with actors Walton Goggins and Stephanie Beatriz for a new campaign, 'Walmart. Who Knew?,' designed to challenge consumer perceptions about the big-box store, according to details shared with Marketing Dive. Goggins serves as a knowledgeable guide in a 60-second spot set to The Who's 'Who Are You' where he dishes on the various perks of shopping with Walmart. Beatriz plays a similar role in a Spanish-language ad set to Ricardo Arjona's "Quien Diría.' The effort, which is live and spans TV, online video, paid social and out-of-home ads, follows the retailer's brand refresh in January. The campaign was inspired by research indicating that while 90% of Americans live within 10 miles of a Walmart, most aren't aware of the retailer's brand evolution. Walmart is reintroducing itself to consumers who may not be aware of its full range of capabilities with its latest campaign. The effort follows the big-box store's recent brand refresh, which included a new typeface, more vibrant colors and a larger emphasis on its spark logo. The refresh also included a focus on delivering greater consistency across channels like its app and website, moves meant to support its goal of becoming a true omnichannel retailer. With its latest campaign, Walmart is highlighting features like Express Delivery and its enhanced Walmart+ membership benefits, including free delivery on a variety of items. A 60-second spot starring Goggins ('The White Lotus') begins with the star asking 'You wanna hear a secret?,' before revealing that the sauna he is sitting in is from Walmart. He goes on to appear in a variety of other scenarios, showcasing how the retailer can provide an assist. The spot ends with a voiceover that states, 'The Walmart you thought you knew is now new.' Actress Beatriz ('Brooklyn Nine-Nine') appears in a Spanish-language spot set at a gender reveal party. The star is seen explaining that, because of Walmart's speedy delivery, she is able to wait to learn what gender the baby is before purchasing a gift, which she proceeds to do after a chaotic reveal. Ahead of the campaign's launch, celebrity Paris Hilton and NBA player Russell Westbrook appeared to tease the effort with social media posts that featured blue and yellow shopping bags marked with the words 'I knew.' Walmart's effort takes a similar approach as JCPenney's 'Yes, JCPenney' campaign that launched in April. That effort, which pushes consumers to reconsider what they think they know about the 123-year-old brand, kicked off with out-of-home ads that depict stylish looks but without overt labels. Instead, they feature copy reading, 'It's from where?' and QR codes that reveal the clothing is from JCPenney. The similarities between Walmart and JCPenney's campaigns are a signal of how legacy retailers — Walmart was founded in 1962 — are attempting to stay relevant and build loyalty as shopping habits change. Walmart reported revenue of $165.6 billion during Q1 of its fiscal year 2026 ended April 30, an increase of 2.5% year over year, per an earnings statement. Its global ads business grew 50% YoY and Walmart Connect in the U.S. was up 31%. Beyond its campaign, the brand has sought to connect with consumers in other ways recently, including through the launch of its own Minecraft Java server in March as a way to link itself to the movie based on the video game property. What Preschooler Says During Acting Audition Leaves Mom Speechless

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Let's be honest—most adults have stretched the truth at least once to land a job. But one preschooler may have taken it to the next level. A recent survey by StandOut-CV of 2,012 U.S. adults revealed that more than three in five respondents (64.2%) admitted to lying on their resume at least once. But resume embellishments aren't just for grown-ups. When Harlyn Brielle was just four years old when she improvised during an acting audition - in a desperate bid to get the role. Her mom, Bree, 33, recently shared the clip on Instagram (@breenotacomedian), where it quickly went viral, amassing over 1.9 million views. "We rehearsed the commercial every day for weeks and she did that part perfectly," she told Newsweek. "But when we got to the questions, she had her own agenda." Two screenshots from the viral video showing the young girl looking at her mom and then smiling. Two screenshots from the viral video showing the young girl looking at her mom and then smiling. Instagram/@breenotacomedian During the virtual interview, Harlyn was asked whether she could speak any other languages. Without missing a beat, she confidently replied, "Yes," then proceeded to invent her own language on the spot—before wrapping up the impromptu answer by repeatedly saying "gracias" in Spanish. Bree, who had spent weeks rehearsing the commercial script with Harlyn, was caught completely off guard. "We rehearsed the commercial every day for weeks and she did that part perfectly," she told Newsweek. "But when we got to the questions, she had her own agenda." Trying to keep things on track, Bree gently clarified to the interviewer that her daughter could do accents, not speak other languages. But Harlyn wasn't about to let go of her narrative, doubling down on her claim with even more Spanish flair. Unfortunately, the audition—allegedly for a cereal brand—turned out to be a scam. Bree discovered the red flag when the organizers asked for money. "When I told Harlyn, her response was, 'No way we're paying them. I'm the star—they should pay me!'" Bree recalled. Although that particular opportunity didn't pan out, Harlyn, now seven, has since landed a small role in the film Girl in the Closet. Determined to support her daughter's acting ambitions, Bree even created an Instagram page dedicated to her budding career: @harlynbrielle. "Harlyn is one of those kids where I never know what's going to come out of her mouth," Bree said. "As a Virgo, she's bold, confident, and—if you ask her— she's always right!" Online audiences seem to agree. The original video, posted on May 6, has garnered more than 165,000 likes and many users can relate to the text layered over the clip. It says: "When you lie on the job application [and] say you're bilingual to try [and] get the job." "I checked the bilingual box on an Indeed app and listed 'mildly conversant' on my resume. I got the job and ended up answering phones while googling responses!" resonated one user. "This is what real confidence looks like. I hope she keeps it forever," complimented another and a third pointed out: "Her mom was just as surprised as we all were."

England fail to fire against Andorra as Thomas Tuchel's experiment falters

Mixed emotions: Harry Kane scored his 450th career goal against Andorra, but England very much flattered to deceive (The FA via Getty Images) There are just 369 days until next year's World Cup, but England's performance against Andorra was not one to inspire you with confidence. Victory always felt inevitable, even when the game was goalless at half-time, however England were lacklustre on their way to a 1-0 win. Advertisement A long season, which isn't over for those heading to the Club World Cup next week, is surely partly to blame. As was the fact that Andorra did a decent enough job of sitting deep and frustrating England. Ranked 173rd in the world, and with bookmakers putting their chances of victory at 175/1, Andorra were happy to not have the ball. Indeed, in the opening 15 minutes, England had 90 per cent possession. That was the pattern of the whole game and England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford could have got out a deckchair to enjoy the Spanish sun. Andorra, for the second game running, did not muster a single shot on target. England's own chances, in fairness, were hardly abundant. Noni Madueke drew a good save early on with a shot from outside the box. Harry Kane turned an effort wide from a Curtis Jones cut-back, while a mazy run from Morgan Rogers deserved more than being a highlight reel on social media. Advertisement When the goal came, five minutes after half-time, it was Kane that broke the deadlock. It was the 450th of his career and he won't have scored many easier. Madueke pounced after Kane's initial effort was saved and the Chelsea winger's cross left the England captain with the goal gaping from just a few yards out. It was a deserved assist for Madueke, who was a bright spark in an otherwise drab affair. It is difficult for anyone to state their case against a side of Andorra's calibre, but Madueke certainly did his best to leave an impression on Thomas Tuchel. This was the first time the 23-year-old has been involved under Tuchel, after missing the games in March through injury, and it surely won't be his last appearance. Advertisement Madueke was involved in many of England's best attacking moments and his only misstep was failing to score a golden chance late on. Tuchel took this World Cup qualifier as an opportunity to experiment because, if you cannot experiment against Andorra, then when can you? Not many of them, however, worked. Jones started at right-back, although he essentially played as a No10 when England had the ball. At times, he was even further forward than Cole Palmer or Jude Bellingham. Reece James, on the other flank, tucked in to form a back three and he did, at least, cause a few problems with his passing from deep. Advertisement Jordan Henderson played ahead of the defence, making his first England start since November 2023. Screening the back three was hardly an arduous task for the 34-year-old, who was the oldest male player to start a game for England since Frank Lampard in 2014. The win for England means they are still top of the of their World Cup qualifying group and it also secured a slice of history for Tuchel. He is the only England manager to win all of his first three competitive games without conceding. Those victories have come against Albania, Latvia and Andorra - and the far, far tougher tests are to come. On the evidence of this win, England have plenty to work on.
