Chennai, Jul 31 (PTI) Lieutenant General V Sreehari has taken over as the new General Officer Commanding, Dakshin Bharat Area, an official release here said on Thursday.
The Dakshin Bharat Area is the Indian Army formation covering peninsular India–Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and the two UTs of Puducherry and Lakshadweep.
The General Officer is the son of late Petty Officer M Velayudhan Nair and Sulochana Nair of Naduvath, Wandoor, Malappuram, Kerala, the release said.
He is an alumnus of Sainik School Amaravati Nagar, National Defence Academy Khadakvasla and the Indian Military Academy Dehradun. He was commissioned into the new raising 16 Sikh Light Infantry Battalion in 1987 and subsequently converted to the Para Regiment in Aug 1992.
He has experience of serving in the Northern, Eastern and Southern parts of the country as well as in a UN Mission abroad. He commanded a Para Special Forces Battalion in Operation Rakshak, Base Camp at Siachen Glacier, an Infantry Brigade in a Strike Corps and a Mountain Division in the North East, the release stated.
Sreehari had served as an instructor at the Junior Leaders Wing, Belgaum & Directing Staff & Senior Instructor at Defence Services Staff College, Wellington.
He holds a master's degree in Defence and Strategic Studies from Madras University, Masters in Management Studies from Osmania University and M Phil from Madras University.
He was awarded with Shaurya Chakra in 1998 while serving with 31 Rashtriya Rifles (Commando), Sena Medal (Distinguished Services) in 2021 for command of his division and an Ati Visisht Seva Medal in 2023. He is also a recipient of the Chief of Integrated Staff Committee Commendation Card in 2009 and the Chief of Army Staff Commendation Card in 2013. PTI JSP SA

The actions came in the aftermath of the 4 day military escalations between India and Pakistan following the Pahalgam terror attack. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Top government sources told CNN-News18 that the measures are part of a pattern of 'petty retaliation" orchestrated by Pakistan's intelligence agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). The source noted that the restrictions aim to disrupt the living and working conditions of Indian diplomats in Islamabad. Gas, water and newspaper supplies cut off According to a government source, the Pakistani company, Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Ltd (SNGPL), has already installed gas pipelines at the Indian High Commission premises. However, the supply of the pipeline has been delibrately withheld. Not only this, local gas cylinder vendors, who had previously provided essential cooking and heating fuel to the mission, have reportedly been instructed by Pakistani authorities not to sell to Indian staff. This has eventually forced diplomats and their families to seek scarce and costly alternatives in the open market, often without success. The harassment goes beyond just gas. Sources told CNN News18 that the mission's contracted supplier for clean drinking water has been blocked from making deliveries. Not only this, all vendors in Islamabad have been instructed not to provide mineral water to the High Commission. This, sources say, has created significant inconvenience for the staff, as local tap water is neither safe nor suitable for consumption without extensive filtration. Sources also told CNN News18 that newspaper vendors have been told to stop sending publications to the mission altogether. The measure is being interpreted by Indian officials as a 'calculated effort to isolate diplomats from regular access to print media and limit their awareness of local narratives and developments.' The source noted that the move is seen as an extension of Islamabad's long-standing strategy of using non-traditional and non-diplomatic pressure tactics instead of engaging in direct dialogue. 'Rajanna has been asked to resign,' a top source in the Chief Minister's office told PTI. Amid rumours of the resignation, Rajanna went into a huddle with the CM in the Vidhana Soudha. At that time, was everyone just sitting quietly with eyes closed? If we speak casually, we'll have to say many things,' Rajanna said. 'Can't be churao aayog': Jairam Ramesh slams EC over detention of Congress leaders; says just wanted to hand over memorandum
Jairam Ramesh (ANI file photo) NEW DELHI: Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh on Monday took a dig at the election commission, remarking, 'Chunav aayog (election commission) is chunav aayog, it cannot be 'churao aayog' (theft commission). " The senior Congress leader was reacting to the detention of Congress leaders on their way to the election commission's office on Monday against the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, which the opposition claims is part of a 'vote theft' plan ahead of the state assembly polls. Ramesh accused the government of stifling democracy, saying the MPs had planned just a peaceful march from parliament to nirvachan sadan to submit a memorandum on the SIR and other issues. 'Our demand was very clear, all opposition MPs wanted to hand over the memorandum together. But we were stopped right in front of parliament, near the PTI building. This is an assault on democracy, its murder,' he said. "This is too clever, cheeky reply by the ECI," he added. Police blocked the MPs from proceeding and later detained them. Several buses were stationed along parliament street, ready to take the protesters away. They were released later. The opposition has been raising the SIR issue inside parliament for days, alleging that the EC's exercise is aimed at disenfranchising voters in Bihar. Ramesh had earlier written to the commission seeking a collective meeting with opposition MPs to discuss the revision process and other concerns. 'We look forward to meeting with the commission in the highest tradition of parliamentary democracy,' his letter said.
